Showdown Looms As Raila Set To Lead Anti-Govt Saba Saba Rally

A showdown looms on Friday between police and supporters of the Azimio La Umoja One Kenya party as they are set to hold a rally at the Kamukunji Grounds to commemorate Saba Saba Day.

The rally is expected to culminate in nationwide protests to pressure President William Ruto’s government to repeal some sections of the Finance Act 2023.

Raila Odinga, leader of the Azimio opposition coalition, has promised to lead a large rally at the Kamukunji Grounds to commemorate the country’s “Third Liberation” on Saba Saba Day.

Odinga pledged at Kamukunji grounds to launch a campaign of “defiance and civil disobedience” against the current government of President William Ruto, which he accuses of being punitive on the people.

The Azimio coalition announced last week that it will start collecting signatures today to “signal the withdrawal of their sovereignty from officials of this illegitimate regime, including Mr William Ruto and all elected leaders who supported the Finance Bill 2023.”

The Azimio leaders and their supporters plan to march from Kamukunji grounds to the Nairobi CBD, which police have warned against.

Nairobi Regional Police Commander Adamson Bungei stated on Thursday that no gatherings would be permitted outside the Kamukunji grounds.

“We have only legalised the Kamukunji meeting and we will not allow any other meeting anywhere else,” Bungei was quoted by the Nation.

The former premier has urged citizens to back his move to stand against what he terms as ‘dictatorship’ and reject newly introduced taxes which he said have made the lives of Kenyans unbearable.

“It has become clear that we are dealing with a dictator who also has no respect for wananchi. Ruto has become a heartless tyrant,” he stated last week.

“As a people, we are not given to suffer in silence; we do not kneel before dictators and beg for their mercy. Even the few who do still suffer humiliation and even death, so we fight! Let us proceed with a bold determination that we are going to stick together and work together.”

Meanwhile, most parts of the city remained calm on Friday morning, including the Kamukunji grounds, where the Saba Saba rally is scheduled to take place.

Despite the fact that most businesses in the city are still closed, security deployment has been increased in areas considered opposition strongholds.

Logging Ban Lifted In Commercial Forests Only, CS Tuya Reiterates

Environment, Climate Change and Forestry Cabinet Secretary Soipan Tuya has reiterated that the lifting of a logging moratorium announced recently by the Government only applies to commercial plantations and not indigenous forests as misconstrued by a section Kenyans.

She said the lifting of the ban imposed by the Government in 2018 following a spike in illegal logging was meant to allow for the harvesting of mature plantations including those owned by the Government.

“We have had a ban on logging existing in the country since 2018. At that time, it was a response to rampant illegal activities and high degredation of our ecosystems.

“When you hear about the lifting of the ban on logging, it only applies to the commercial plantations which have not been touched since 2018 due to the moratorium,” CS Tuya reiterated.

The CS spoke on Thursday in North Horr town, Marsabit County where he commissioned Tiniqo and Horri Gudha wetlands, restored by the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) as part of the 15 billion national tree growing and ecosystem restoration programme.

CS Tuya revealed that Kenya had a total of 150,000 hactres of commercial forests across the country, adding that a maximum of 5,000 hactres will be harvested annually to allow for replanting and regeneration of logged acreage.

“The 150,000 hactres are in parts of our gazetted forests, only there will we allow for harvesting of commercial, exotic trees but not in indigenous forests,” the CS said.

She said the lifting of the ban would allow private forest owners who had been restricted by the 2018 moratorium to harvest their mature trees.

“The logging ban also came with restrictions upon private forests where farmers who have forests within their farms could not log. With the lifting of the ban, they will be allowed to log in a regulated manner,” the CS said.

To address illegal logging that led to the 2018 ban, CS Tuya said her Ministry was strengthening Kenya Forest Service (KFS) to effectively undertake its enforcement mandate by among other interventions, the recent recruitment of additional rangers.

Additionally, the Cabinet Secretary, who was accompanied by Marsabit County MP Naomi Waqo, said she had ordered KFS to mount a ruthless countrywide crackdown on illegal logging starting in Mau forest complex.

“Because of the reason why we had the ban on logging in the first place, we still have to be vigilant to make sure that no illegal activities are happening within our forests,” she said.

CS Tuya also spoke about the ongoing recruitment of youth to support the 15 billion national tree growing programme dubbed ‘green army’ saying the Government will recruit 4,000 youth in the first cohort.

“We have advertised for the first lot of 4,000 youth and the advert is running up to 22nd of July. That’s just the first cohort. We intend to do up to 100,000 young people across the country to help us restore back extension services we need in forest conservation and ecosystem restoration,” she said.

On wetlands restoration, CS Tuya said the programme fits into her Ministry’s 15 billion nationall tree growing programme and Kenya’s broad climate action agenda spearheaded by President William Ruto who is the current Chairperson of the Committee of African Heads of State and Government on Climate Change (CAHOSCC).

“The President is leading from the front, that’s why we have the first ever Africa Climate Summit happening in September in Nairobi,” the CS said.

At the same time, CS Tuya said the ongoing reform of the climate change law to streamline carbon markets will be complete by September this year.

“For a very long time, we’ve had carbon credit projects happening in Kenya without the Government knowing their extent or collecting revenues.

“For communities, revenue-sharing arrangements have been opaque. It is not known how much goes to the investor and how much goes to communities,” CS Tuya said.

Later, the CS addressed a public baraza in North Horr town where he rallied area residents to take up tree growing as an intervention to mitigate against climate change and the expanding Chalbi Desert.

“If we conserve our environment we will be able to end drought. We will get water. We will get food,” the CS rallied North Horr residents as he thanked NEMA for restoring Tiniqo and Horri Gudha wetlands.

Other speakers at the public baraza were NEMA Director General Mamo Mamo, Narok County MP Naomi Waqo and North Horr Deputy County Commissioner (DCC) Sylvester Mwangulu.

Hon Waqo reiterated the Cabinet Secretary’s call for restoration of wetlands in the expansive County including Aite wetland which she said was the lifeline of Saku sub-county.

The County MP promised to lead a massive tree growing campaign in North Horr soon saying the recent drought was “an eye opener”.

“The journey we have started today is the journey to transform the desert. Conservation of the environment is the work of wananchi. If we take care of the environment, it will take care of us.

“Please take good care of the trees we plant. I will come here to bring development during which we will plant trees,” Hon Waqo assured.

Swiss midfielder Xhaka joins Leverkusen from Arsenal

Bayer Leverkusen have signed Switzerland midfielder Granit Xhaka from Arsenal on a five-year deal, the Bundesliga club said on Thursday.

Financial details were not disclosed but British media reported the German club paid 25 million euros ($27.19 million)for the 30-year old.

Xhaka joins Xabi Alonso’s Leverkusen after spending seven seasons with Arsenal in which he made 297 appearances, with 23 goals and 29 assists, and helped the club win two FA Cups.

Xhaka will return to the German league having had a four-year spell with Borussia Moenchengladbach before joining Arsenal in 2016.

“I know the league inside out and I watched it when I was in London. Bayer 04 is a club with an impressive history and ambitious targets,” said Xhaka.

“Above all, I see it as a club with a great future. Everybody here is ambitious and wants to achieve something – I’m very much looking forward to the next few years.”

Guardiola Treble And Luis Enrique Appointment Highlight Spanish Coaching Impact

In the wake of Pep Guardiola’s stunning treble with Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain turning to Luis Enrique, it is clear Spanish coaching is in vogue.

The duo, both treble winners at Barcelona, are joined by plenty of compatriots at other top-flight sides on the continent.

Arsenal’s Mikel Arteta, Guardiola’s former assistant, ran City close for the English title last season.

With a different approach to the game, Unai Emery has pulled up trees with Aston Villa, Bournemouth sprang for the exciting Andoni Iraola, while Julen Lopetegui helped Wolves avoid the drop and Marseille appointed Marcelino Garcia Toral in June.

Spanish coaches have been increasingly appealing since the country dominated world football between 2008 and 2012, La Roja winning European Championships in those years, as well as the 2010 World Cup.

Nations League victory this summer, under Luis de la Fuente, who replaced Luis Enrique in December, is a further boost after a fallow period.

With Spain’s football so dominant – at club level LaLiga teams have won 11 of the last 24 Champions Leagues and 12 of the last 20 Europa Leagues – overseas clubs watched with covetous eyes.

That interest leads to a “brain drain” effect but the Spanish FA’s coaching school quickly produces replacements.

“We are the reflection in the federation of how they work at the clubs and in the youth academies,” said Spain U21 coach Santi Denia after leading his team into the Euro 2023 final for that age category.

“The level of Spanish coaches is the best in the world, and I’m not saying that about myself, obviously.

“I try to take advantage of the work of the Spanish coaches.”

TECHNICAL AND TACTICAL

LaLiga currently has 17 Spanish coaches among its 20 sides, as well as four operating in England, three in France including Luis Enrique, and one in Germany.

Almost 27 per cent of teams across Europe’s top five leagues have a Spaniard at the helm, as of July 2023.

Without the spending power of other leagues – outside of Spain’s big three of Barcelona, Real Madrid and Atletico – many clubs focus on coaching players rather than buying new ones.

Instead of the power, speed and frantic nature English football is known for, in Spain teams have often looked to hone some of the more technical and tactical aspects of the game.

Even though elsewhere teams defend with more brawn, backlines in Spain are often tougher to break down because they control spaces superbly.

In the Premier League supporters sometimes derided passing the ball out from the back or considered it too risky, but an increasing majority of teams now employ the strategy.

While the “tiki-taka” style in its purest form has faded, with even Guardiola moving on, the key elements of it still propel City’s game.

Combining that level of technique and positional play with the physicality and velocity the Premier League is known for has found the apex of the two styles.

Guardiola’s treble-winning team has an imposing spine, from Erling Haaland to Rodri to regularly lining up with four central defenders, but still dominating with the ball.

That union of styles is reflected in the personality of Luis Enrique, a forceful presence both as a player and in the dug-out, but a staunch advocate of possession football while in charge of Spain.

Perhaps it also explains how so many coaches have come from one province of Spain’s Basque country – Guipuzcoa.

‘COMMON THREAD’

Iraola, Emery, Lopetegui and Arteta all hail from there, along with current Real Sociedad coach Imanol Alguacil and Bayer Leverkusen’s Xabi Alonso.

The weather in that region is closer to England than the scorching south and the teams historically played in a more physical style than their LaLiga counterparts.

“I don’t think it’s coincidence, we must have some common thread,” Arteta told Marca in an interview in June.

“I don’t know if it’s the Basque character connecting well with the English, our style, our way of being, or our seriousness.”

Regardless of whether Spanish coaches lean towards attacking or defensive styles, they are tactically rigorous.

One outlier is Jose Luis Mendilibar, who led Sevilla to Europa League glory last season with a back-to-basics approach – at least that’s how he describes it.

As well as the appeal of Spanish coaches to foreign sides, the attraction is mutual, not least because many coaches can earn more abroad than in Spain.

LaLiga teams have been tightening their purse strings for years while Premier League spending continues to rise.

That means coaches can have access to a higher calibre of player than back home and have more requests met in the transfer market.

Spanish is also the second language spoken in many Premier League dressing rooms featuring South American players – including Portuguese-speaking Brazilians, who are often comfortable with it.

Rafa Benitez was the first Spaniard to coach in the English top flight, leading Liverpool to Champions League glory in 2005 – and even he was criticised for his zonal marking defensive set-up.

Since then Spanish coaching influence on football in the Premier League and other top divisions has steadily risen, and Luis Enrique’s arrival in Paris is the latest example.

Richardson Clocks World-Leading 10.71 At US Athletics Championships

US sprint star Sha’Carri Richardson launched her latest bid for a first World Championships berth in style Thursday, clocking a world leading 10.71sec to lead the 100m heats at the US athletics championships in Eugene, Oregon.

Richardson delivered a personal best to continue her strong start to a season highlighted by the World Championships in Budapest in August.

Richardson clocked a 10.76sec at the Doha Diamond League meeting on May 5 – a month after a sensational wind-aided 10.57sec at the Miramar Invitational in Florida in April.

On Thursday she improved on the previous world-leading time of the season of 10.75sec set by Ivorian Marie-Josee Ta Lou at the Bislett Games on June 15.

Richardson was infamously barred from the pandemic-delayed Tokyo Olympics in 2021 after testing positive for marijuana.

She then saw her hopes of challenging for a medal at last year’s World Championships vanish when she bombed out of the US trials.

The 23-year-old, who said this season she is making up for lost time, opted not to discuss her performance, preferring to remain focused with the semifinals and final to come on Friday.

Only the top three finishers will secure a World Championships berth.

Richardson easily won her heat ahead of Brittany Brown, whose 10.96 was second-fastest overall.

Tamara Clark posted the third-fastest time of 11.02.

Aleia Hobbs, who has ducked under 11 seconds half a dozen times this season, safely made it into the semis with a time of 11.11sec.

Christian Coleman, the 2019 world champion who missed the Tokyo Olympics after a ban for missed drug tests, topped the times in the men’s 100m heats in 9.95sec.

Cravont Charleston was second-fastest overall in 10.01 while Kendal Williams and JT Smith both posted times of 10.02.

Last year’s 100m world bronze medallist Trayvon Bromell and Noah Lyles finished with identical times of 10.05 as they made it safely into the semifinals.

Marvin Bracy-Williams, who took silver behind fellow American Fred Kerley at last year’s worlds, pulled up with an injury and failed to advance.

“You hit 9.95 in the first round, it seems like a pretty good race,” Coleman said. “So just try to clean it up and let it rip tomorrow.”

He said he’d put behind him a disappointing third-place finish at the New York Grand Prix last month.

LYLES’ WILD WEEK

But while he feels up to the challenge, Coleman knows the competition remains fierce, even with Kerley, who has a bye as defending champion in the event, opting to run the 200m this week.

“Just anybody’s game when you get out there on the line,” Coleman said. “So I’ve got to earn it.”

Lyles, the reigning 200m world champion who is targeting a 100-200 double in Budapest, recovered from a mediocre start to advance, and revealed after the race he had only been cleared to travel on Sunday after a second bout of Covid.

“Very wild week,” Lyles said. “I’m still in pretty good shape. My top end (speed) is there, just got to wake my body up.”

Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone, the 400m hurdles world record holder and world champion who has turned her attention to the 400 flat this season, led the 400m heats with a time of 49.79sec.

Britton Wilson, in her first race since the US collegiate NCAA championships, won her heat in the second-fastest overall time of 50.08.

The 10 Stadiums Being Used For The Women’s World Cup

The Women’s World Cup takes place from July 20 to August 20 in Australia and New Zealand.

AFP Sport visits the 10 stadiums which will host matches:

AUSTRALIA

Stadium Australia, Sydney (83 000 capacity)

The tournament’s main venue – also known as the Olympic Stadium after being built as the centrepiece of the 2000 Sydney Games – will host the opening-day match between Australia and Ireland on July 20 and the final a month later.

Located in the city’s west, it is the home ground for National Rugby League clubs Canterbury Bulldogs and South Sydney Rabbitohs, and has hosted countless major sporting events since it opened in 1999.

Sydney Football Stadium (42 500)

This brand-new facility at Moore Park was completed last year to replace the ageing Allianz Stadium on the same site, which has hosted a sports ground since 1903.

Next to the famous Sydney Cricket Ground, it is regularly used for football, rugby league, rugby union and as a concert arena. Six games will be played here.

Melbourne Rectangular Stadium (25 000)

Also known as AAMI Park, the venue is in a precinct that also includes the Melbourne Cricket Ground and Melbourne Park, venue of the Australian Open tennis.

Within walking distance of the city centre, it will host six matches including Australia’s heavyweight Group B finale with Canada.

Brisbane Stadium (52 500)

Currently known as Suncorp Stadium and formerly Lang Park, it is Brisbane’s major sporting and entertainment hub.

Nicknamed “The Cauldron”, it will host eight games including a quarterfinal and the third-place play-off, with European champions England kicking off their campaign here against Haiti.

Perth Rectangular Stadium (20 000)

A stone’s throw from the Swan River, this state-of-the-art stadium used to be oval-shaped but is now the city’s only rectangular venue and home to A-League club Perth Glory.

The Group D battle between Denmark and Asian champions China kicks off the action on July 22 with four other games to follow.

Hindmarsh Stadium, Adelaide (15 000)

The home of football in South Australia since 1960, the ground has undergone major surgery to bring it up to scratch for the tournament, including a new roof on the eastern stand.

It has hosted countless A-League games and was a key venue for the 2000 Sydney Olympics football tournament. Five matches will be played here across four groups, and one round-of-16 clash.

NEW ZEALAND

Eden Park, Auckland (50 000)

New Zealand’s national stadium has been home to cricket and rugby for more than 100 years and witnessed many memorable moments, including the 1987 and 2011 Rugby World Cup finals.

The tournament’s opening match between New Zealand and Norway will be here. The hallowed ground will host nine games in total, including a semifinal.

Wellington Stadium (34 500)

On the banks of New Zealand’s Wellington Harbour and also known as Sky Stadium, it was opened in 2000 and is the home of Super Rugby club Hurricanes.

It will host nine games including a quarterfinal, plus a blockbuster group clash between the United States and the Netherlands in a re-run of the 2019 final, which the Americans won 2-0.

Dunedin Stadium (30 000)

Bordering New Zealand’s stunning Otago Harbour, it is recognised as the world’s first fully enclosed natural turf stadium.

Opened in 2011 and also known as Forsyth Barr Stadium, it is home to Super Rugby side Highlanders and will host six games, starting with the Philippines against Switzerland on July 21.

Waikato Stadium, Hamilton (25 000)

The spiritual home of rugby in the New Zealand North Island city of Hamilton, it hosted two of the inter-confederation play-offs in February.

A short walk from the city centre, the ground will stage five games, starting with the Group C meeting between Zambia and 2011 champions Japan on July 22.

Twitter Threatens To Sue Meta After Thread App Success

Twitter is threatening Meta with a lawsuit after the blockbuster launch of Meta’s new Twitter rival, Threads — in perhaps the clearest sign yet that Twitter views the app as a competitive threat.

On Wednesday, an attorney representing Twitter sent Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg a letter that accused the company of trade secret theft through the hiring of former Twitter employees.

The letter was first reported by Semafor. A person familiar with the matter confirmed the letter’s authenticity to CNN.

The letter by Alex Spiro, an outside lawyer for Twitter owner Elon Musk, alleged that Meta had engaged in “systematic, willful, and unlawful misappropriation of Twitter’s trade secrets and other intellectual property.”

In response to reports on the letter, Musk tweeted: “Competition is fine, cheating is not.”

What is Threads? Here’s what you need to know about the potential ‘Twitter Killer’

The letter goes on to say that Meta hired former Twitter employees who “have improperly retained Twitter documents and electronic devices” and that Meta “deliberately” involved these employees in developing Threads.

OceanGate Suspends Submarine Operations After Deadly Implosion

The company that owned a submersible that imploded on its way to explore the wreck of the Titanic, killing all five onboard, said Thursday it has suspended operations.

OceanGate announced the action in a brief statement posted atop its website. Contacted for additional information, a spokesperson declined to comment further.

Among those killed in the implosion was Stockton Rush, the submersible’s pilot and chief executive officer of the company.

Investigators believe the Titan imploded as it made its descent into deep North Atlantic waters on June 18.

The Coast Guard said last week that human remains have likely been recovered from the wreckage of the submersible and are being examined by medical officials in the U.S.

Couple Found Having Sex At A Church Altar

A group of worshippers in Uganda has vowed never to set foot in a church in the country’s Kayunga District after a couple was found having sex at the altar on Tuesday.

The two, a married 23-year-old male Catholic and his recently divorced Muslim girlfriend, were reportedly caught pants down by the man’s wife, who alerted neighbours.

“A headgear belonging to the woman and a T-shirt for the man are being kept at the Local Council’s (LC) residence as exhibits,” Bugonya LC1 chairman George William Kanda is quoted as saying

“They accessed the church through the windows since the doors were shut.”

Kanda added that following the incident, the culprits were frogmarched to his office by irate residents but he later set them free after filing a promiscuity case against them.

By Thursday, the man had gone into hiding; his current whereabouts remain unknown.
