Migori Entrepreneurs Receive Shs.1.06 Million From Poverty Eradication Fund

Migori small-scale entrepreneurs have received Sh.1.06 million from Poverty Eradication Fund (PEF) to help eradicate poverty through initiating income-generating activities.

Migori County Director of Social Development Eliud Ondara said that the national government fund will benefit nine youth and women groups in the Suna sub-counties to help improve their livelihoods.

Ondara explained that the benefiting groups received between Sh. 80,000 and Sh. 150,000 to help them empower themselves through self-sustaining projects that can generate income for members.

The official urged the beneficiaries to be committed, transparent, and trustworthy and repay the loan in time to increase their loan limits and help others access the funds.

The PEF loan interest is capped at eight percent with a grace period of between one to three months to give the borrower enough time to start repaying their loans.

“Due to the nature of the funds we have given the borrowers a one-month grace period and a subsequent one-year repayment plan with an interest of eight percent paid once”, noted Ondara.

He called upon the local residents to register with the Social Development Department and establish a table banking system for ease of access to the funds.

Migori County Deputy Commissioner Benson Karani said that the funds will empower various business groups in the county in an effort to eradicate poverty.

Karani revealed that the PEF will help the beneficiaries to focus on income-generating activities meant to fight poverty by promoting income generation on an individual basis within the groups.

The administrator added already the national government through various directorates has educated the groups on various ways of investing the fund.

“Majority of business groups in the country have been trained on various avenues of investment with the aim of increasing productivity and boosting our economy,” explained Karani.

Edwin Obara a beneficiary of the fund expressed his delight at the revival of the funds that will give a chance for youths to engage in meaningful developmental projects.

Obara however called upon the government to sensitize the public more and encourage the youths to apply and access the funds for economic empowerment.

Faith Kipyegon Open To Chasing Double Glory In Budapest

Olympic 1500m champion Faith Kipyegon is eagerly waiting for a signal from Athletics Kenya and her coaches to determine whether she will double in the World Athletics Championships set for Budapest next month.

Kipyegon crowned her status as the queen of middle-distance races last month after shattering the 5000m and 1500m records last month in the Paris Diamond Florence Diamond Leagues respectively.

Her back-to-back world record times in the two races recorded within a week left many convinced that she had the mettle to double and mine gold in Budapest.

Much as the star girl insists that defending her 1500m crown is the ultimate dream in Bupadest, she doesn’t rule out the possibility of chasing double glory at the global stage.

“I am still heated up towards Budapest, but I cannot say anything in terms of doubling 1,500m and 5,000m but stay healthy and be consistent in what I do. I will be aiming to defend my 1,500m title,” she offered.

“I am still in negotiations with my team to see if I could double in Budapest but let me first see what will happen in the trials. Breaking two world records in Paris and Florence, then coming home and being received by the state was really motivating for me and the young generation of athletes and mothers,” she added.

Meanwhile, the 2019 world silver medalist has promised her fans that ‘more is in store’ as she gears up for the 2023 Budapest World Championship trials set for Nairobi from Friday 7 July.

Speaking at the Global Sports Communication Athletics Camp on July 5 after receiving the LG/SJAK Sports Personality of the Year award, she noted that her main aim was to defend her 1,500m title in Budapest.

“More is still in store as we head to the World Championships in Budapest. I hope for the best as I travel to Nairobi, Nyayo for the trials. Hopefully, I will defend my title in Budapest and see what is in store this year,” she noted.

Kipyegon’s name is now synonymous with excellence. Upon breaking two world records, she received a heroic reception at State House, where President William Ruto announced a reward of five million shillings and a house valued at Sh6 million.

Her father, Samuel Kipyegon would later be awarded a brand-new Toyota Probox on June 17.

Her most recent gift was the LG dishwasher worth Ksh.166,000 which was her second award with LG/SJAK.

“This is my second LG/SJAK award. Previously I had won a washing machine which helped me ease the cleaning of tracksuits. The dishwasher will ensure that my nails are intact while washing utensils. I am grateful to LG and SJAK for the support,” Kipyegon said.

The track star will be battling it out with 1500m stars Edinah Jebitok, Judith Kiyeng and Winnie Chebet among others for top slots at the national trials.

Kakamega Homeboyz Recall Trio From Loan Spell At Vihiga Bullets

Recently-crowned Mozzart Bet Cup champions Kakamega Homeboyz have recalled the trio of Adnan Mohammed, Edwin Apaa and Michael Isabwa from their loan spells at Vihiga Bullets.

The three were loaned out to the relegated side in the mid-season transfer window in a bid to help them gather more experience and game time.

While Apaa and Adnan were sent to Bullets to gain top flight experience, loaning out Isabwa was meant to hand the winger playing time after falling down the pecking order at the club.

Both Adnan and Apaa had joined Homeboyz in the mid-season transfer window from Somali Premier League side Gaadidka FC and Nyota FC respectively.

Isabwa and Adnan rarely featured for Bullets who kissed the grass after finishing bottom on the log in the concluded season.

Adnan, previously revealed that off the pitch issues had barred him from contesting for game time at Bullets.

Apaa on the hand capitalized on the platform offered by Bullets, putting in top of the drawer performances that have procured him interest from a number of top-flight clubs.

“We have recalled the three following the conclusion of the season. We had our first technical meeting after the Cup triumph on Wednesday and agreed to recall them. A decision on their future in the team will be made soon,” confirmed Homeboyz team manager Boniface Imbenzi.

Homeboyz are set to reinforce their squad ahead of their CAF Confederation Cup debut next season.

The Mozzart Bet-sponsored club has already re-signed Ghanaian midfielder Stephen Opoku who had been a free agent since leaving the team in February.

Robert Matano To Stay As Tusker FC Coach

Robert Matano will remain as Tusker FC coach despite media reports linking him with a move away from Ruaraka.

Against the backdrop of a low-key 2022-23 season which ended for the 12-time Kenyan champions without silverware, grapevine pointed to Matano’s exit.

Matano was reportedly on his way to Bandari FC, but the dockers have since settled on Twahir Muhiddin as the permanent head coach.

Tusker failed to defend their Football Kenya Federation Premier League (FKFPL) title which Gor Mahia won on the last day of the league.

To add salt to injury, the brewers also missed the Mozzart Bet Cup, and a chance to play continental football, losing to Kakamega Homeboyz FC in the final, to end the season high and dry.

Yet, Tusker’s management has kept faith with the Lion, as Matano is nicknamed.

“I’m here to stay,” the four-time FKFPL winner, told Mozzart Sport.

In a previous interview ahead of the Mozzart Bet Cup final, the 59-year-old gaffer indicated that his contract was soon lapsing with just a month left.

Regardless, together with other members of the technical staff, Matano met Tusker’s hierarchy on Wednesday where the future was mapped up.

“It was a long meeting. We reviewed the previous season, examined what might have gone wrong, and agreed to rectify the shortcomings,” the former AFC Leopards and Sofapaka coach, said.

As a first step towards crafting a more successful future, Matano will embark on strengthening his squad before the team returns for preseason.

“There’s a need to revamp the squad and we’re going to do that in the coming days and months,” Matano said.

Tusker won the previous two league titles under Matano before Gor Mahia stopped them on their tracks. “Our aim is to improve from last season,” he added.

Kenya On Right Track To Achieving Food Security As 10,000 Acres of Land Proposed for Food Production

During his familiarisation visit to the Galana Kulalu Food Security Project Model Farm yesterday, Mr. Felix Koskei, Chief of Staff and Head of Public Service, was welcomed by Mr. Ephantus Kimotho, Principal Secretary State Department for Irrigation.

After submitting a Project Implementation Proposal (PIP) that was accepted in accordance with the PPP Act of 2021, the State Department for Irrigation through the National Irrigation Authority has engaged Twiga Foods to carry out food production on the finished 10,000 acres.

With the right type, fertilizer regimen, plant spacing, and soil amendment techniques, Twiga Food is currently testing 538 acres of maize in the hopes of producing a yield of 10MT per Ha.

In this pilot phase, 538 acres of maize are being produced on trial; these acres are being maintained according to several experimental treatments, and they are progressing very well. According to agronomists, there will be 40–45 bags per acre.

With such a promising yield, the PS was assured that the nation was on the right track to achieving food security and carrying out the direction of His Excellency, President Hon. William Samoei Ruto, PhD., C.G.H. to use PPP to fully use Galana Kulalu land for that purpose.

Mr. Felix Koskei, the head of the public service, expressed satisfaction with the progress made in following the president’s orders and urged the State Department to complete its ongoing assessments of the submitted PIPs.

CS Tuya: Government To Fence All Gazetted Forests

Soipan Tuya, the Cabinet Secretary for Environment, Climate Change, and Forestry, has revealed government intentions to fence all gazetted forests nationwide in order to protect them from encroachment and other harmful human activities.

The results from ecosystem restoration initiatives like the 15 billion national tree growth plan, she said, would also be sustained with the help of the fencing.

“The first thing we’ve done as a Ministry is to map all forests across Kenya. We’re looking for partners to back up Government funding for fencing of all forests across the country,” CS Tuya announced.

The Cabinet Secretary spoke on Wednesday in Marsabit during a meeting with the community forest association on the first day of her two-day working visit of the County at the Marsabit Kenya Forest Service (KFS) office.

At the same time, CS Tuya appealed to forest-adjacent communities to participate more actively in conservation activities saying the Government won’t succeed in its ecosystem restoration efforts without their support.

“I know we won’t succeed without collaboration and good relations with communities. We must collaborate. You are our eyes. You’re the owners of the environment,” the CS said.

“People who imagine that our forests are available for encroachment should forget it. We have started an operation, starting in Mau, a place called Sururu and we will go to all forests,” CS Tuya said as she challenged KFS to enhance surveillance against illegal forest activities.

“We can’t employ more rangers and then have more illegalities. The reason we are employing more rangers is to enhance enforcement. We have to phase out all illegal forest activities.

“We can’t be pushing for the growing of 15 billion trees while at the same time losing more trees to illegal activities. We can’t be engaged in a zero sum game,” the CS cautioned.

The Cabinet Secretary emphasised that her Ministry will monitor to make sure that the criteria are met as she reminded Government agencies of their goals as outlined in the 15 billion national tree-growing initiative.

CS Tuya also discussed the production of sufficient seedlings to sustain the initiative’s 15 billion national tree planting effort, stating that her Ministry was collaborating with the Kenya Forestry Research Institute (KEFRI) to generate enough seeds.

To guarantee that Kenyans grow trees best suited for their ecological zones, CS Tuya said KEFRI has been charged with carrying out ecological species matching in addition to producing enough tree seeds.

“We’re working with KEFRI, which is a scientific institution in my Ministry, to undertake species matching so that, if it is Marsabit, we know the right species for this area,” the CS said, adding that 30 percent of all seeds produced will be fruit and nut species to support agroforestry.

The CS stated that the Government was intent on mapping and fencing wetlands across the nation so as to use their water for year-round tree-growing activities. This was in reference to the conservation of wetlands.

NEMA DG Mr. Mamo Mamo and Marsabit County MP Hon Naomi Waqo also spoke at the conference. They criticised the expanding invasion of the Marsabit Forest and advocated for coordinated measures to preserve the county’s woods.

In addition to calling for more security patrols in Marsabit Forest, Hon Waqo, who is accompanying the CS on the two-day tour, also advocated for forest conservation. He claimed that the woodland had turned into a hideout for armed bandits who maim and kill residents.

MYDAWA Raises Ksh 2.8B As Regional Expansion Gains Traction

E-healthcare provider MYDAWA has announced the acquisition of Uganda’s largest pharmacy chain Guardian Health for an undisclosed amount.

The acquisition follows a Ksh 2.8 billion ($20M) capital injection from Alta Semper, an international private equity fund targeting to democratize access to health and well-being, having first backed the company in October 2021.

“This investment marks our entry into digital healthcare in Africa, which we see as a major growth area and an extremely important drive of health outcomes across the continent in the coming years. MYDAWA was the logical choice for us as their proprietary technology, underpinning a scalable business model along with regulatory know-how and market entry experience mapped extremely well to our own strategy,” said Afsane Jetha, Alta Semper Chief Executive Officer.

At the same time, the firm formally announced the appointment of Priscilla Muhiu as chief executive officer to replace Neil O’leary who is also the founder of the company.

“MYDAWA is delighted to formally announce the appointment of Priscilla Muhiu, who was most recently at Glovo, to lead its Kenyan business. Under Priscilla’s leadership MYDAWA has already seen significant expansion of both consumer and business to business activity,” the firm said in a statement.

MYDAWA says the acquisition of Guardian Health which has 19 stores in key locations in Kampala and neighbouring regions is part of its expansion strategy to consolidate its operations in the region and internationally.

“It is the ideal launchpad on which to overlay the e-health capabilities of MYDAWA – simultaneously making it both the biggest and most advanced e-health offering in Uganda. MYDAWA is dedicated to continuing its growth trajectory while constantly improving service for customers in Uganda. MYDAWA continues to be on the lookout for potential acquisitions and collaborations with promising start-ups across Africa,” said Muhiu.

The firm which first began operations as an online pharmacy in Kenya is now a fully regulated one-stop-shop for healthcare with access to consultations, tests, referrals, a continuous help desk, accessible through an omni channel delivery method based on customer preferences.

The firm is says to complete the service offering, it is opening walk in pharmacy/health centres in Kenya, the newest being the successful launch of a combined full-service pharmacy, health centre and fulfilment centre in Mombasa, Kenya.

MYDAWA recently received a major grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to expand its service offering into telemedicine and distribute HIV products in the region.

Severe Floods Kill At Least 15 In China’s Chongqing, State Media Reports

Torrential downpours and flooding have killed at least 15 people and four others remain missing in Chongqing, southwest China, state-run news agency Xinhua reported Wednesday, citing local authorities.

The deaths have been recorded since Monday as heavy rains have battered southwest China, prompting four counties in Chongqing to issue the highest level red alert warnings.

Videos from the sprawling megacity show residents being rescued, while authorities work to clear streets of floodwater.

China’s Ministry of Emergency Management also raised its emergency levels.

Neighboring Sichuan province has also been hard hit, with more than 460,000 residents affected by the heavy rain – but no casualties reported so far, according to the provincial government. More than 85,000 Sichuan residents have been displaced, state-run broadcaster CCTV reported Tuesday.

At least 400 emergency teams have been dispatched to help rescue and relief operations in the area, according to state media.

Chinese leader Xi Jinping has ordered authorities to “give top priority” to keeping residents safe and minimizing losses, according to Xinhua.

He also told various government ministries, including flood control and emergency management authorities, to coordinate the response effort.

This summer has already seen heavy rain, with four people killed and three missing in Sichuan last week after landslides triggered by rainstorms and flash floods, Xinhua reported.

And videos emerged on Monday of the dramatic rescue of a couple trapped on their car roof after a riverbed flooded in central Henan province.

Rescue workers used a drone to deliver rope and life jackets to the couple, who huddled on their car amid rushing brown water before being “dragged” to the river bank by a crane, according to CCTV.

The floods come as other parts of China battle intense heat waves in yet more examples of extreme and unpredictable weather that experts say is a sign of the climate crisis’ impact.

Earlier this week, the country registered the highest number of hot days over six months since records began, according to authorities.

China has already experienced four regional heat waves so far this summer, which arrived earlier and have been more widespread and extreme than in previous years, according to the National Climate Center.

Northern China, a heavily populated region with hundreds of millions of residents, has been particularly hard hit, with more heat waves expected in coming weeks.

16 Dead In S. African Slum Gas Leak: Emergency Services

At least 16 people, including children, have died after a gas leak at a South African slum near Johannesburg, emergency services said Thursday, revising the death toll after some people were resuscitated.

The Wednesday night disaster thought to be linked to illegal mining activities, occurred at the Angelo informal settlement east of Johannesburg.

“We have got 16 on scene now that are confirmed dead, and the intervention of paramedics managed to revive some others and they were taken to hospital,” emergency services spokesman William Ntladi told AFP from the scene.

Of those in hospital, four are in “critical” condition while 11 are in “serious but stable” condition, he said. One, who he described as a minor, was fully conscious, he added.

Five women and three children were among the dead.

Fire and emergency services received a call around 8 pm (1800 GMT) about a gas explosion, but on arrival they discovered it was “a gas leakage from a cylinder” containing a “poisonous gas”, Ntladi said.

In a statement he said the cause of the incident “is alleged to be a nitrate oxide gas leakage from the cylinder used in an illegal mining activity in and around the settlement.”

“Apparently, the illegal miners used the gas to extrapolate gold out of the soil,” he said.

Upon arriving at the scene near the middle-class suburb of Boksburg, first responders found scores of people “lying all over the area due to inhalation of this toxic gas,” Ntladi said in the statement.

– Abandoned mine –

Rescue workers and forensic police combed through the affected area — a cluster of squalid shacks built out of bricks and corrugated iron sheets — late into the night, AFP journalists saw.

The area sits at the foot of an old and abandoned mine.

Neighbours gathered around a fire during the cold southern hemisphere winter, watching the stream of uniformed police officers and forensic investigators at work.

With a dizzying unemployment rate of more than 32 percent, South Africa is home to thousands of illegal miners nicknamed “zama zamas” which means “those who try their luck” in Zulu.

Thousands of unregistered miners scavenge obsolete mines for gold under arduous and often perilous conditions.

South Africa’s commercial hub Johannesburg and its surrounding areas are built around mountainous dumps of soil and cavernous pits left behind by generations of mining companies that started extracting during a gold rush in the 1880s.

Boksburg was last month struck by a 5.0 magnitude earthquake, suspected to have been linked to the maze of underground tunnels and shafts associated with illegal mining in the area.

The same suburb was also the scene of a massive gas tanker explosion that killed 41 people on Christmas Eve last year when a truck carrying liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) got stuck under a bridge, triggering a leak and blast.

Among the victims were people and medics who had approached the scene either to help or see the trapped truck.

Dozens at a nearby hospital, including patients and staff members, sustained serious burns after the explosion, which smashed windows and caused the roof to collapse.

Two Dead As Strongest Summer Storm Blasts Netherlands, Germany

A record-breaking summer storm hammered the Netherlands and Germany on Wednesday, killing two people and throwing international air and rail travel into chaos.

Storm Poly packed howling winds of up to 146 km/h (90 mph), toppling trees and forcing the cancellation of 400 flights from Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport, one of Europe’s busiest hubs.

Meteorologists said the storm was the strongest on record to hit the Netherlands in the summer months and issued a rare “code red” warning for millions of people in the low-lying nation to stay indoors.

A 51-year-old woman was killed when a tree fell on her car in the Dutch city of Haarlem, while a 64-year-old woman died after being struck by a falling tree in the German town of Rhede near the Dutch border, police said.

Two men were seriously injured in Amsterdam, one when a tree fell on his car, while a second was believed to have been hit by falling power lines, local media said.

A tree also fell on a houseboat in one of Amsterdam’s historic canals, while another toppled onto a tram in The Hague, though no one was hurt.

– Howling winds –

Schiphol Airport said the number of flights would “gradually improve” as winds started to drop but would remain disrupted for the rest of the day.

“At the moment, 400 flights have been cancelled,” a Schiphol spokesperson told AFP. The airport is a major hub for connecting flights from Asia, the Middle East and the United States to the rest of Europe.

Eurostar trains from Amsterdam to London and high-speed rail services to the German cities of Cologne and Hamburg were also called off, while many domestic trains were cancelled, Dutch train operator NS said.

Most Dutch domestic trains were cancelled, including those to Schiphol airport, causing further misery for travellers.

Several hundred people were stranded at Amsterdam’s central station, including students touring Europe for their summer holidays, an AFP journalist said.

“They told me all the trains were cancelled. We’re going on a bus now to Brussels that’s going to get there at 2 am,” said British student Abby Scott, 18.

“I’m supposed to go to a party tonight — I think I might just walk to The Hague,” joked Ariane Gentile, 64, a school teacher.

Raging winds caused destruction across the country, with an entire row of trees falling on houses in a street in Haarlem, beach houses and even a school damaged in northern provinces.

– ‘Code red’ –

The government sent out a mobile phone alert urging people to stay indoors in North Holland province, which includes Amsterdam, and to call overstretched emergency services only in “life-threatening” situations.

The Dutch meteorological service KNMI said winds of force 11, the second highest on the scale, were measured along with a gust of 146 km/h measured in the northern port of IJmuiden.

It was the “first very severe summer storm ever measured” in the country, Dutch weather service Weerplaza said, adding that the gusts were also the strongest ever recorded in the summer in the Netherlands.

The last storm of similar strength to hit the Netherlands at any time was in January 2018, it said.

Storm Poly came a day after a small tornado hit the central city of Apeldoorn, causing damage but no injuries, local media said.

With around a third of the country lying below sea level, the Netherlands is vulnerable to extreme weather and the effects of climate change and has a huge system of water defences.

A violent North Sea storm on the night of January 31 to February 1, 1953, killed more than 1,836 Dutch people.
