Cocaine Found At White House Was In Area For Visitors

Cocaine discovered at the White House was left in an area frequently used by visitors on tours — and not while President Joe Biden and his family were on the premises, officials said Wednesday.

The White House sought to get the highly unusual story under control as details emerged of the drug’s discovery Sunday in one of the most carefully guarded buildings in the world.

Initial reports were of a white powder, sparking fears of the kind of episode regularly occurring in official Washington buildings where unidentified powders found during searches or received in the mail are treated as potential chemical attacks.

This prompted a brief evacuation. But an entirely new set of alarms went off when preliminary analysis by technicians from the city’s fire department determined the substance was actually cocaine.

On Wednesday, the US Secret Service, which protects the presidential mansion, announced it “just confirmed that substance found was cocaine and our investigation is ongoing.”

Biden has made a priority of restoring traditional decorum to the White House after the Donald Trump years, which included reports that the Republican president had a habit of flushing documents down toilets.

However, the 80-year-old Democrat has been dogged by salacious reporting over his son Hunter’s troubled private life, not least the trained lawyer’s well-documented battle with severe drug addiction.

The cocaine revelation immediately sparked unsubstantiated speculation in right-wing circles that the recovering drug user was somehow responsible.

Trump himself jumped on the bandwagon Wednesday with a typically rambling, insult-laden message that included: “Does anybody really believe that the COCAINE found in the West Wing of the White House, very close to the Oval Office, is for the use of anyone other than Hunter & Joe Biden?”

– Bidens were away –

Reflecting the furore, reporters at a meeting between Biden and Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson mostly skipped asking questions on NATO and geopolitics for unsuccessful attempts to query the president on his position regarding the cocaine.

In an attempt to put an end to the gossip, the White House made clear that circumstantial evidence, at least, points to a visitor being responsible, not anyone connected to the Bidens.

Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said the narcotic had been found in an area routinely used by outsiders invited by White House staffers on tours of the West Wing, which includes the Oval Office.

Before entering the sensitive areas of the complex, visitors are asked to leave cellphones behind in lockers, which is where the narcotic was reportedly found.

This was “a heavily traveled area where many White House West Wing… visitors come through,” Jean-Pierre said. Such tours took place last Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Biden’s chief spokeswoman then emphasized that the first family was not around at the time.

“The president, the first lady and their family were not here over the weekend,” she said. “They left on Friday and returned just yesterday.”

Jean-Pierre deflected further questions, saying “we have confidence that the Secret Service is going to get to the bottom of this.”

But she did say that Biden had been briefed and underlined that anyone working at the White House is subject “to rigorous guidelines that include drug testing.”

“Certainly we take that very seriously,” she said.

Kenya To Abolish Visa Requirements For Comoros Nationals By End Of 2023

The government is set to abolish visa requirements for people holding valid travel documents issued by the Union of Comoros traveling to Kenya before the end of the year.

This is according to President William Ruto who is in Comoros for the 48th Anniversary of the Independence Day of the Union of the Comoros.

To further strengthen ties between the two nations in the education sector, President Ruto said Kenya is working closely to allow students from Comoros to pursue higher education in the country and pay the same amount of fees as local students.

“Kenya stands with Comoros as partners in progress, committed to deepening our collaboration for the benefit of our peoples. Together, we can harness our shared potential to create opportunities, foster innovation, and build sustainable economies that leave no one behind,” said President Ruto.

While congratulating President Azari Assoumani for accepting the responsibility to Chair the African Union (AU), for 2023, Ruto noted that Comoros is the first island state to assume the leadership of the continental governing body, adding that this is a highly exemplary achievement that will give confidence to all the people of Africa irrespective of whether they come from small or big country.

He reiterated Kenya’s commitment to supporting Comoros as Azari leads the African continent to greater heights and confronts the people’s day-to-day challenges.

Ruto said he is looking forward to tremendous progress in institutional reforms at the African Union, that will enable the AU Commission, AU organs and specialised agencies to rise to their full potential and fulfill their mandate of facilitating the emergence of a union that can effectively participate in global affairs.

Keke Palmer’s Boyfriend Defends Himself After He’s Slammed For Shaming Her Outfit At Usher Concert

Keke Palmer‘s boyfriend and the father to her one son, Darius Jackson, is doubling down on his disapproval of the outfit she wore in a viral video that showed her being serenaded by Usher.

The video, which was taken at Usher’s Las Vegas residency show and shared on July 5, showed the 29-year-old singer and actress in a black thong bodysuit worn under a sheer, skin-tight dress.

At one point in the video, Keke wrapped her arms around Usher, 44, while he had his arm around her lower back.

However, it was not the actions, but the outfit, that upset Darius.

“It’s the outfit tho… you a mom,” Darius quote-tweeted the video.

After feeling the heat from Keke’s fans over his remarks, Darius took to Twitter again to share his dismay.

“We live in a generation where a man of the family doesn’t want the wife & mother to his kids to showcase booty cheeks to please others & he gets told how much of a hater he is,” he tweeted on the evening of July 5.

“This is my family & my representation. I have standards & morals to what I believe.”

Keke and Darius have been together since the summer of 2021.

Uganda Govt to block pornography sites

Uganda’s internet service providers have been given the daunting task of blocking pornographic websites.

The government on Wednesday vowed to give a directive demanding the blocking of adult content to protect the nation’s innocent youth from the perils of online pornography.

The government’s intention is to shield young people from explicit material, predators, and offensive social media posts.

The move comes after Uganda Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Thomas Tayebwa tasked the government to block all pornographic content.

“Our children are exposed to cartoons of violence, our teens are exposed to pornography. In Muslim countries, pornography is blocked. Tell me how much we can lose as an economy if we blocked pornography sites in the country. Pornography is killing us,” said Tayebwa.

In 2017, the Ugandan government formed a “pornographic control committee” charged with the responsibility of detecting and prohibiting pornographic material within the country’s borders.

This committee even went as far as spending Ksh.12 million to acquire a “special machine” that could supposedly detect all pornographic content in Uganda.

At Least 6 Feared Dead As 2 Boats Capsize On Lake Victoria

At least six people are feared dead in two separate boat capsizing accidents on Lake Victoria in Uganda, a police spokesperson said in the capital of Kampala on Wednesday.

Patrick Onyango, the spokesperson of the Kampala Metropolitan Police, told Xinhua by telephone that a passenger boat with 11 people on board from Kiseba islands in Kalangala District of central Uganda capsized while heading to the Katosi landing site in the central district of Mukono.

He said the boat was also loaded with 100 bags of charcoal, 40 bags of silver fish, and other personal belongings.

“Six people were rescued by another transport boat and five people are still missing,” said Onyango.

“Police marines are in the waters trying to locate the missing people whether dead or alive,” he said, adding the cause of the accident was overloading and bad weather.

The spokesperson also said one person died and another survived after another boat sailing from Kasi Island on Lake Victoria to Katosi capsized due to bad weather on Wednesday morning.

“Two people were on board. The woman drowned, and the man was rescued by a fishmonger. It capsized due to overloading of goods and bad weather,” said Onyango.

Boat accidents on the East African country’s lakes are common due to overloading and bad weather.

“We appeal to travelers who use water transport to always have life jackets and not to overload their vessels,” said Onyango.

Disney Star And Pop Singer Coco Lee Dies Aged 48

Singer Coco Lee, who enjoyed pop stardom in Asia in the 1990s and 2000s, has died at the age of 48.

Born in Hong Kong, Lee moved to the US as a child and released albums in Mandarin and English.

She also voiced the lead character in the Mandarin version of Disney’s hit film Mulan, and performed a song from the soundtrack of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon at the 2001 Oscars.

Her sisters said she had been in a coma since a suicide attempt at the weekend.

Lee had been suffering from depression for a few years, older sisters Carol and Nancy wrote in a Facebook post.

She tried to take her own life at home on Sunday and was taken to hospital, where she died on Wednesday, they wrote.

Lee broke into the Mandopop scene in 1994 with two Mandarin albums. Within the next year, she released an English-language album as well as a third Mandarin album.

“Not only did she bring us joy with her songs and dances in the past 29 years, she also worked hard to break new ground for Chinese singers in the international music scene and has been doing her utmost to shine for the Chinese,” Lee’s sisters wrote.

She also sang the Mandarin version of the Mulan theme song, Reflection; while her song Before I Fall in Love is on the soundtrack to the 1999 Hollywood film Runaway Bride, starring Julia Roberts and Richard Gere.

Her performances included a Michael Jackson & Friends benefit concert in South Korea in 1999, and she was a judge on TV talent shows including Chinese Idol.

This past New Year’s Eve, Lee said in an Instagram post that she had “faced major life changing hurdles”, and described 2022 as an “incredibly difficult year”.

‘Trademark bright smile’

Her latest single Tragic was released on 14 February this year.

In March, she said on Facebook that she had undergone pelvic and thigh surgery after triggering an old leg injury during dance practice late last year.

In 2011, Lee married Bruce Rockowitz, former chief executive officer of Hong Kong-based supply chain giant Li & Fung. They have two daughters from his previous marriage.

Rumours that they had split started to surface about three years ago, but Lee never addressed them.

On Wednesday, Lee’s sisters wrote: “In addition to remembering Coco, I hope that you will share her trademark bright smile, honesty and kindness with everyone around you, and continue Coco’s wish that all those around her will feel her love and joy.”

Boy Left Unclothed After Burgess Hill Sexual Assault By Two Women

A teenage boy who was sexually assaulted by two women woke up with his clothes removed and injuries to his head and body, Sussex Police have said.

The 15-year-old was walking along Cants Lane in Burgess Hill before heading through a wooded area towards World’s End at about 18:15 BST on 4 June.

He was assaulted and woke up on the floor, police said.

Both women were between 18 and 20 years old, one being 6ft 3in (1.9m) tall and with bright dyed red hair.

She was wearing blue shorts and black crop top with pink Air Jordan trainers, and had glasses, a police spokesman said.

The other was about 5ft 9in (1.75m) tall with long white blonde hair and spoke with a Merseyside accent.

Anyone who recognises the descriptions or saw anything suspicious in the area is asked to contact Sussex Police.

Meta Launches Twitter Rival Threads — But Not In Europe

More than 10 million people have signed up to Threads, Meta’s rival to Twitter, within the first few hours of its launch, the Facebook parent’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg said Thursday.

Threads is the biggest challenger yet to Elon Musk-owned Twitter, which has seen a series of potential competitors emerge but not yet replace one of social media’s most iconic companies, despite its epic struggles.

The app went live on Apple and Android app stores in 100 countries at 2300 GMT on Wednesday, and will run with no ads for now.

“10 million sign ups in seven hours,” Zuckerberg wrote on his official Threads account Thursday.

Accounts were already active for celebrities such as Jennifer Lopez, Shakira and Hugh Jackman, as well as media outlets including The Washington Post and The Economist.

Zuckerberg spent the first few hours of the platform’s launch replying to new users.

“One thing that’s up is the number of world champion MMA fighters on Threads, especially now that you’re here!” he wrote in a reply to American MMA fighter Jon Jones.

“Round one of this thing is getting off to a good start,” he said in another.

Zuckerberg also offered a shot across the bow at Musk — the pair are known to be bitter rivals, and have even offered to meet each other in a fighting cage to wrestle it out.

In his first tweet in over a decade, Zuckerberg posted a Spiderman pointing at Spiderman meme in an apparent reference to the similarity of the two platforms.

Back on Threads, he wrote: “It’ll take some time, but I think there should be a public conversations app with 1 billion+ people on it. Twitter has had the opportunity to do this but hasn’t nailed it. Hopefully we will.”

Twitter has said it has more than 200 million daily users.

Threads was introduced as a clear spin-off of Instagram, which offers a built-in audience of more than two billion users, thereby sparing the new platform the challenge of starting from scratch.

Zuckerberg is widely understood to be taking advantage of Musk’s chaotic ownership of Twitter to push out the new product, which Meta hopes will become the go-to communication channel for celebrities, companies and politicians.

“It’s as simple as that: if an Instagram user with a large number of followers such as Kardashian or a Bieber or a Messi begins posting on Threads regularly, a new platform could quickly thrive,” strategic financial analyst Brian Wieser said on Substack.

Analyst Jasmine Engberg from Insider Intelligence said Threads only needs one out of four Instagram monthly users “to make it as big as Twitter.”

“Twitter users are desperate for an alternative, and Musk has given Zuckerberg an opening,” she added.

Instagram chief Adam Mosseri told users that Threads was intended to build “an open and friendly platform for conversations.”

“The best thing you can do if you want that too is be kind,” he said.

Under Musk, Twitter has seen content moderation reduced to a minimum with glitches and rash decisions scaring away celebrities and major advertisers.

Musk hired advertising executive Linda Yaccarino to steady the ship, but she has not been spared his whimsy.

The Tesla tycoon said last week that he was limiting access to Twitter to ward off AI companies from “scraping” the site to train their technology.

Musk then angered Twitter’s most devoted aficionados by declaring that access to its TweetDeck product — which allows users to view a fast flow of tweets at once — would be for paying customers only.

Meta has its legion of critics too, especially in Europe, and despite Instagram’s massive user base, they could slow the site’s development.

The company is criticized mainly for its handling of personal data — the essential ingredient for targeted ads that help it rake in billions of dollars in profits every quarter.

Mosseri said he regretted that the EU launch was delayed, but if Meta had waited for regulatory clarity from Brussels, Threads would remain “many, many, many, months away.”

“I was worried that our window would close, because timing is important,” he added to Platformer, a tech news site.

According to a source close to the matter, Meta was wary of a new law called the Digital Markets Act (DMA), which sets strict rules for the world’s “gatekeeper” internet companies.

One rule restricts platforms from transferring personal data between products, as would potentially be the case between Threads and Instagram.

Meta was caught out for doing just that after it bought the messaging app WhatsApp, and European regulators will be on high alert to ensure that the company doesn’t do so illegally with Threads.

Globally, the Threads hashtag on Twitter has garnered over a million tweets, with many users jokingly suggesting users would be returning to Twitter.

“10 mins into threads app. Me coming back to Twitter,” one user wrote, sharing a video of a man sprinting.

Another shared an image of Homer Simpson running back and forth between the Twitter and Threads logos.

By midday local time Thursday, Threads was the top trending topic on Japan Twitter, but many users expressed concerns over data privacy.

“Threads is run by Meta, isn’t it? It will definitely leak your real name or the game you are playing, or put you in the list of your workplace company friends,” wrote one user.

Another said: “Meta loves to collect private information and I don’t trust the way it treats private information. I also have the impression that this is a company hated by EU, so I’m reluctant.”

England U21s Cruise Into First Euro Final Since 2009

Morgan Gibbs-White insists England Under-21s “still have loads of work to do” after helping the Young Lions to their first European Championship final since 2009.

The Nottingham Forest midfielder opened the scoring in the 42nd minute with a looping header from Cole Palmer’s cross, having missed an earlier penalty.

Manchester City forward Palmer then tucked the ball in at the back post from an Emile Smith Rowe ball across the box to double the lead.

The excellent Palmer then exchanged passes with substitute Cameron Archer who made sure of the win as he smashed in England’s third.

The Young Lions, who are yet to concede a goal in the tournament, will play Spain in Saturday’s final, as they look to win the competition for the first time since 1984.

“It’s hard to put into words,” said Gibbs-White.

“We’ve been working for the past two years just to get to this moment. It’s not an achievement yet, we still have loads of work to do.

“I feel like we have a good together team and the right team that can go all the way.”

England should have been ahead in the 17th minute after a hectic few seconds of play. Smith Rowe had a shot cleared off the line and then an effort turned onto the post just a few seconds later.

Newcastle’s Anthony Gordon was then brought down by Karm Jaber for a penalty but Gibbs-White placed the spot kick well wide of the right-hand post.

Lee Carsley’s men continued to press and, after a dangerous ball by Palmer just evaded everyone, Gibbs-White’s header finally gave England a deserved lead just before the break.

Israel’s main threat came from set-pieces and Jaber fired well over when well placed in the box from a corner.

Their best chance of the match came when Dor Turgeman was played through on goal, but his shot was deflected wide for a corner, before Omri Gandelman flashed a shot wide from inside the area.

After Palmer doubled the lead, Israel thought they had pulled a goal back in the 85th minute but James Trafford, who is close to completing a £15m move to Burnley from Manchester City, kept out a close-range header.

England had already beaten Israel 2-0 in the group stage of the competition and substitute Archer made it one better with an emphatic late finish.

The win continues an excellent campaign for Carsley’s side, who have the chance to become European champions at this level for the first time in 39 years.

Gibbs-White takes chance to shine

Last summer there were many who thought that Nottingham Forest had overpaid for Gibbs-White. The midfielder left his boyhood club Wolves for a deal worth up to £42.5m but he has not looked back since.

The 23-year-old was crucial in helping Forest beat the drop from the Premier League last season.

He has racked up three assists and one goal in his four games in this tournament and had to overcome missing a penalty in the first half before giving his side a semi-final lead.

“These young players’ mentality is different to my generation,” England manager Carsley said. “Curtis (Jones) gives the ball away and just wants to get on it again, he doesn’t even think about it. Morgan is the same.

“It’s such a skill to have, that self-belief. The players know we believe in them, we want them to do well. It’s important that he keeps getting on it, he keeps creating chances.”

Gibbs-White has experienced success with the national team before as he was part of the U17 squad that won the World Cup in 2017 and scored in the final.

“A couple of players played in that who are playing in this team now,” he said.

“I feel confident. Obviously there’s always room to improve. My main role for the team is just to try and help the team as much as possible on and off the ball.

“I feel like assists have been a big part of my game this season and I’ve carried that into the tournament. It’s just about trying to get more goals now. Full focus is on Saturday and just the team.

“That’s the first time I’ve missed a penalty wide. I was really frustrated with myself but I knew another chance was going to come so I had to stay calm, stay composed and when my chance came I took it.

“I got us into the lead but the main thing is we got the win and we’re into the final.”

Cameraman hurt by wild throw at Yankees game

A cameraman was injured after being hit in the head by a baseball at Wednesday night’s match in New York between the Yankees and the Baltimore Orioles.

Pete Stendel of the YES Network was struck during the bottom of the fifth inning when a ball thrown to first base missed the player and hit him.

Play was delayed for 15 minutes as team medical staff tended to Mr Stendel.

As he was being taken off the field, he raised his hand to wave to the audience of over 36,000.

Mr Stendel was hit by a ball thrown by Orioles rookie shortstop Gunnar Henderson that sailed over first base and struck him on the sidelines.

The Twitter account for the Baltimore Orioles said the team wished him “a speedy recovery”.

The Yankees tweeted footage of Mr Stendel with his hand up giving a peace sign as a golf cart drives him off the field.

Audience members could be heard chanting “MVP” – short for most valuable player – as he was taken away.
