‘Smallville’ Actor Released From Prison For Role In Sex-Trafficking Case Tied To Cult-Like Group

The television actor Allison Mack, who pleaded guilty for her role in a sex-trafficking case tied to the cult-like group NXIVM, has been released from a California prison, according to a government website.

Mack, best known for her role as a young Superman’s close friend on “Smallville,” was sentenced to three years behind bars in 2021 after pleading guilty two years earlier to charges that she manipulated women into becoming sex slaves for NXIVM leader Keith Raniere.

Online records maintained by the Federal Bureau of Prisons said Mack, 40, was released Monday from a federal prison in Dublin, California, near San Francisco. Her release was first reported by the Albany Times-Union.

Mack avoided a longer prison term by cooperating with federal authorities in their case against Raniere, who was ultimately sentenced to 120 years in prison after being convicted on sex-trafficking charges.

Mack helped prosecutors mount evidence showing how Raniere created a secret society that included brainwashed women who were branded with his initials and forced to have sex with him.

In addition to Mack, members of the group included an heiress to the Seagram’s liquor fortune, Clare Bronfman; and a daughter of TV star Catherine Oxenberg of “Dynasty” fame.

Mack would later repudiate Raniere and express “remorse and guilt” before her sentencing in federal court in Brooklyn, New York.

Ancelotti To Coach Brazil From 2024 Copa America: Source

Real Madrid’s Italian coach Carlo Ancelotti will take over as head coach of Brazil’s national team for the 2024 Copa America, a source at the Brazilian Football Federation told AFP on Tuesday.

The federation had announced earlier that Fluminense’s Fernando Diniz would take charge of the team in the interim period.

Ancelotti has a season remaining on his contract with Real and will take over Brazil in time for the Copa America which will be held in the United States from June 2024.

The former AC Milan and Chelsea coach will become the first foreigner to coach Brazil in almost sixty years.

The last foreign coach of Brazil was Argentine Filpo Nunez who was in charge for one game in 1965.

Among his many successes, the 64-year-old Ancelotti has won the Champions League twice with both AC Milan and Real Madrid.

He has also won domestic league titles in England with Chelsea, Germany with Bayern Munich and France with Paris Saint-Germain as well as with Real and Milan.

Brazil were coached by Tite at last year’s World Cup, but he stood down from the role after their elimination at the quarter-final stage to Croatia.

Ramon Menezes has been in charge of the team since on a caretaker basis.

The CBF had earlier issued a statement saying that Diniz would be in charge of the team for the coming year.

“Fernando Diniz will lead the Brazilian team for a year, and I’m sure he will do it with great competence, as always during his professional career,” said CBF president Ednaldo Rodrigues in a video statement.

“It is a dream, an honor and a huge pride to serve the national team,” Diniz said.

The 49-year-old will be in charge of the six South American qualifying games for the 2026 World Cup that will be played this year, including the clashes with Argentina and Uruguay.

Brazil will start their qualifying campaign in September at home against Bolivia and then away against Peru.

Ndindi Nyoro Named New Murang’a Seal Patron, Rewards Team With Kshs 1 Million

Kiharu Member of Parliament, Ndindi Nyoro, demonstrated his support and appreciation for the new entrants in the Football Kenya Federation Premier League (FKFPL), Murang’a Seals FC, by hosting them to a lunch treat at his KICC offices on Monday.

The gesture aimed to motivate the team and recognize their achievement in gaining promotion, as well as their recent victory over Shabana FC.

During the event, Nyoro generously rewarded the team with a donation of Kshs 1 million.

The funds will be allocated to the technical bench and playing unit, serving as a motivational boost as they prepare for their crucial season-ending match against Gusii United over the weekend, which will decide the National Super League (NSL) title.

The club’s Chairman, Robert Macharia, a lawyer by profession, expressed gratitude to the team for their exemplary performance and encouraged them to secure the championship on Saturday, capping off their remarkable season.

Nyoro also pledged his commitment to mobilizing resources to further strengthen the team and establish them as a formidable force in Kenyan football.

Reflecting on the event, Nyoro shared his joy in hosting Murang’a Seals FC, the only team from the Mt. Kenya region to compete in the Premier League.

He emphasized their significance as a source of pride for Kenya, particularly for the region. The meeting concluded with a mutual agreement to pool resources together, aiming to enhance the team’s capabilities.

Murang’a Seal, led by coach Vincent Nyaberi, has had an impressive campaign, securing a spot in the top-flight football for the first time in their history.

As they approach the final match of the season, they have a chance to claim the NSL championship if they defeat Gusii FC and their close rivals Shabana fail to secure maximum points against Kisumu All Stars.

CAF Boss Motsepe Intervenes In South Africa Women’s Team Dispute

Africa football boss Patrice Motsepe has intervened to resolve a dispute between the South African women’s 2023 World Cup squad and the national association, a source told AFP on Tuesday.

The 61-year-old Confederation of African Football (CAF) president hails from South Africa and is expected to reveal details of his mediation in Johannesburg on Wednesday.

“This dispute involving the women’s team was a major embarrassment not just for South Africa, but all of Africa,” said a CAF source, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

“Something had to be done, and quickly, with some South African players scheduled to leave for New Zealand tomorrow (Wednesday).”

Insufficient business-class seats means the squad, coaches and officials will travel to New Zealand in two groups on Wednesday and Thursday.

Australia and New Zealand are co-hosting the World Cup and African champions South Africa, Morocco, Nigeria and Zambia are representing the continent.

Motsepe helped resolve issues surrounding contracts, which squad members said did not include the $30,000 (27,500 euros) appearance fee promised by FIFA to each of the 23 players.

This resulted in the team not playing a send-off match against Botswana near Johannesburg last Sunday, and a hastily assembled team of South African lower league players lost 5-0.

Banyana Banyana, The Girls in isiZulu and the popular name of the national team, were also unhappy with the venue, saying they risked injuries on what was considered a sub-standard pitch.

There was also disappointment at the choice of Botswana – a team ranked 96 places below South Africa – with the squad wanting stronger opponents.

Before the farewell match debacle, South Africa beat Uzbekistan, drew with Slovenia and lost to Brazil (twice), Australia and Serbia in warm-ups.

“Safa might feel they have done enough, but I have a different opinion,” forward Jermaine Seoposenwe told the public broadcaster SABC.

“But at the end of the day I am a player and my job is to come here, play and then leave,” added the star from Mexican club CF Monterrey.

Ranked 54th in the world, South Africa are outsiders in Group G, which includes former runners-up Sweden (3), Italy (16) and Argentina (28).

South Africa will play fellow qualifiers Costa Rica in a warm-up match on July 15 before beginning their World Cup campaign eight days later against the Swedes in Wellington.

UN Warns World To Prepare For El Nino Impact

The United Nations on Tuesday warned the world to prepare for the effects of El Nino, saying the weather phenomenon which triggers higher global temperatures is set to persist throughout 2023.

El Nino is a naturally occurring climate pattern typically associated with increased heat worldwide, as well as drought in some parts of the world and heavy rains elsewhere.

The phenomenon occurs on average every two to seven years, and episodes typically last nine to 12 months.

The UN’s World Meteorological Organization declared El Nino was already underway and said there was a 90-percent chance that it would continue during the second half of 2023.

“The onset of El Nino will greatly increase the likelihood of breaking temperature records and triggering more extreme heat in many parts of the world and in the ocean,” warned WMO secretary-general Petteri Taalas.

“The declaration of an El Nino by WMO is the signal to governments around the world to mobilise preparations to limit the impacts on our health, our ecosystems and our economies,” said Taalas.

“Early warnings and anticipatory action of extreme weather events associated with this major climate phenomenon are vital to save lives and livelihoods.”

The US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, which feeds into the WMO, announced on June 8 that El Nino had arrived.

“It is expected to be at least of moderate strength,” the WMO said.

It noted that El Nino’s warming effect on global temperatures is usually felt most strongly within a year of its onset — in this case in 2024.

– Triple-dip La Nina over –

El Nino is the large-scale warming of surface temperatures in the central and eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean.

Conditions oscillate between El Nino and its generally cooling opposite La Nina, with neutral conditions in between.

El Nino events are typically associated with increased rainfall in parts of southern South America, the southern United States, the Horn of Africa and central Asia.

It can also cause severe droughts over Australia, Indonesia, parts of southern Asia, Central America and northern South America.

The WMO says the last El Nino was in 2015-2016.

From 2020 to early 2023, the world was affected by an unusually protracted La Nina, which dragged on for three consecutive years.

It was the first so-called triple-dip La Nina of the 21st century and only the third since 1950.

La Nina’s cooling effect put a temporary brake on rising global temperatures, even though the past eight-year period was the warmest on record.

– Record predictions –

Wilfran Moufouma Okia, the WMO’s head of regional climate prediction services, said that over the next six months, “there will be 10-percent chances for El Nino to weaken”.

“So we can rule out the development of La Nina this year,” he told reporters.

“The effect of El Nino is usually perceived with a delay in time,” he added, with an eye on global temperatures increasing further.

In May, the WMO predicted a 98-percent likelihood that at least one of the next five years — and the five-year period as a whole — will be warmest on record.

Currently the hottest year on record is 2016, when there was an exceptionally strong El Nino, combined with human-induced heating from greenhouse gas emissions.

The UN’s World Health Organization said it was helping countries prepare for the impact of El Nino, by pre-positioning stocks.

“In many of the countries that will be most affected by El Nino, there are already ongoing crises,” warned Maria Neira, the WHO’s environment, climate change and health director.

The UN health agency is particularly concerned about likely increases in cholera, mosquito-borne diseases such as malaria, and infectious diseases like measles and meningitis.

Extreme heat, wildfires and greater food insecurity leading to more acute malnutrition are also a cause for concern, she said.

Christophe Galtier Reaches Agreement With PSG To Quit As Coach – Source

Christophe Galtier will leave his position as coach of Paris Saint-Germain after agreeing a severance package with the French champions, a source close to the negotiations told AFP on Wednesday.

Galtier leaves after one year in charge and with a season remaining on his contract. He is expected to be replaced on the PSG bench by former Barcelona and Spain coach Luis Enrique.

Barcelona Sign Defender Inigo Martinez On Free Transfer

Barcelona confirmed the arrival of defender Inigo Martinez on a free transfer on Wednesday at the end of his Athletic Bilbao contract.

The signing of the 32-year-old centre-back, a Spain international, on a contract until 2025, continues the Catalans’ recent policy of hiring experienced players at zero transfer cost.

Barcelona signed Manchester City captain Ilkay Gundogan in similar fashion last week and acquired Chelsea defender Andreas Christensen and AC Milan midfielder Franck Kessie after their contracts expired last summer.

“(Martinez) will sign for two seasons, until 30 June 2025, and will have a 400 million euro ($435 million) release clause,” said the Spanish champions in a statement.

Martinez, who came through at Real Sociedad and played for them for seven seasons in the top flight, moved to Athletic in January 2017.

Athletic Bilbao paid his 32 million euro ($35 million) buy-out clause, which remains a club record fee.

Martinez played 177 times for Athletic, scoring eight goals and winning the Spanish Super Cup in 2021, as well as reaching two Copa del Rey finals.
