Raila Declares ‘Saba Saba’ Rally Across The Country, Maintains It’s Still On

Raila Odinga, leader of the Azimio La Umoja One Kenya Coalition Party, has stated that the protest rally scheduled for Kamukunji grounds in Nairobi on Friday, July 7, 2023, will be held nationwide.

In a press conference on Tuesday afternoon, the Opposition Leader rallied all of his supporters across the country to mark the historic Saba Saba Day by protesting the current government’s high cost of living.

Odinga, who promised to lead a major rally at the Kamukunji grounds, said he would formalise where subsequent rallies would be held across the country.

“Our Kamukunji meeting is on in Nairobi this Friday as we had announced. But it is not just a Kamukunji in Nairobi, but a Kamukunji across the country where this Third Liberation will be launched,” Odinga stated.

The Azimio Chief cited rising taxes on consumer goods, fuel, and the recently announced fare hike, noting that the consultative meetings would be aimed at boycotting President William Ruto’s regime, its policies, and taxes.

He stated that the opposition coalition would lead Kenyans in gathering signatures to reject the administration.

“Ruto is imposing taxes on us without our consent and making laws whose net effect is to make life increasingly difficult. We are here because the taxation situation in the country and its accompanying injustices can no longer be tolerated,” he said.

“On July 7 2023, among other activities, we will launch signature collection to signify our rejection of Kenya Kwanza’s illegitimate regime and its policies, especially the punitive taxes,” he said.

“As we speak, fuel, food, fare…are all going up in prices. In fact, the fare is already going up by 30%.”

As a result, the former premier urged Kenyans to support his efforts to oppose what he called ‘dictatorship’ and to oppose newly imposed taxes that he claimed made Kenyans’ lives unbearable.

“It has become clear that we are dealing with a dictator who also has no respect for wananchi. Ruto has become a heartless tyrant,” he stated.

“As a people, we are not given to suffer in silence; we do not kneel before dictators and beg for their mercy. Even the few who do still suffer humiliation and even death, so we fight! Let us proceed with a bold determination that we are going to stick together and work together.”

At the same time, Odinga defended the legality of the protests, claiming that Kenyans will be exercising their constitutional right.

He assuaged concerns about violence during the rallies by emphasising that the protests would be peaceful and in accordance with the law.

“By embarking on protests, picketing, tax boycott and civil disobedience we are not in any way advocating for violence. We have never advocated for violence in the past, we will never advocate it now or in the future,” he noted.

“We believe in the law and the rule of law and we will act within the law but the only weapon which we have in our hands is our sovereign power to picket, protest, boycott and embark on civil disobedience beginning on Friday.”

Businessman Allegedly Robbed By Alleged Police Officers On A Search In His Shop

A businessman in Kugitimo trading centre is seeking justice after people alleged to be with police officers from Kurumangucha police post went to search his shop.

According to the wife of the businessman Hellen Mekere, the three policemen dressed in civilian clothes came to his shop after they were dropped off by a motorcyclist and asked for the businessman who was away.

They ordered the wife out of the shop and started searching the shop without even a search warrant and identifying themselves who they were and the intention of the search.

The wife later discovered that they had left with Ksh 360.000, money that they had accrued from the sales of potatoes and others from the same shop.

A witness, Masaga Elijah, said that he identified one of the people as a police officer attached to the Kurumangucha Anti-Stock Theft police post where he works.

He vowed to identify the police officer and help the businessman and his family get justice for the alleged robbery at the shop in broad daylight.

The witness who is also a businessman at the same trading centre said that the wife was ordered by the people to get out of the shop after they asked for his husband and they did give reasons why they wanted the businessman.

Paul Kiangwi, a brother to the businessman, decried the state of the injustice that the officers are alleged to have met in his brother’s shop and wanted actions taken against them.

Chief Lucas Nyamangondi of Nyabasi North location said that according to his investigations the shop is alleged to have been raided by police officers from the Kurumangucha police post and efforts to compel them have not yet born any fruit as they have denied being involved.

He said that the officers were not even sent by any senior police officers and the area police bosses have denied sending any police officers to do a search at the businessman’s shop.

He added that they did even have a search warrant to do the search and no senior police officer from Kuria East had sent them.

The matter has been reported at Kegonga police station and investigations to establish the motive of the raid and loss of cash are still ongoing.

Ganze Residents Threaten To Kill Wildife Over Elephants Invasion

Residents of Ganze, Kilifi County have threatened to kill marauding elephants that have been destroying their crops.

Led by their area MP Kenneth Kazungu, the community said that they have persevered for long but can’t take it anymore.

The MP said locals had planted a bit of their acreage on maize as a food security after the rains but that has all been destroyed by the beasts from Tsavo East National park who escaped from the park to the villages.

“We had good rains this season and everyone went to the farm to plant maize as a food security. Unfortunately the herds of elephants that have never been seen in this region descdend on our maize farms, flattening them and rendering us to zero again,” he said.

Mr Tungule said they even as leaders called for enhanced patrols but nothing was forthcoming.

“I want to ask our Public Service and Gender CS Aisha Jumwa to talk to her counterpart in the Wildlife docket to make sure that there is enough compensation from the government to our farmers. If this doesn’t happen then we shall kill the elephants are a revenge to our longtime suffering,” he said.

Speaking during a combined relief food distribution program from both the county government of Kilifi led by governor Gideon Mung’aro and the national government, cabinet secretary for Gender Ms Aisha Jumwa promised to follow up on the issue of compensation to have enough funds given to the community.

She faulted the little money that the ministry has set as compensation targets on human-wildlife conflict, saying that it is a big injustice to the people.

“I am told that they pay eight shillings per destroyed maize stick. This is not fair. I will follow up with my colleague CS and if they don’t increase their compensation sealing then I will join you in your quest to kill the elephants so that the CS comes in person to address this menace.”

The leaders spoke during a food distribution exercise at Bamba.

Meanwhile the relief food distribution program targeted areas of Ganze, Kaloleni and Magarini sub-counties where the Kilifi governor donated bales of Unga while the national government contributed sacks of Rice and beans to the residents to caution them from hunger.

Murang’a County To Partner With Jacaranda Health to Improve Maternal Health Care

Jacaranda Health, in partnership with the Murang’a County Government, witnessed the graduation of the first cohort of mentees and in-facility mentors under the MENTORS programme on Monday in an effort to eradicate maternal newborn deaths and enhance skilled birth attendance in health facilities throughout the county.

The 68 grandaunts, who are qualified nurses and midwives, were chosen from 17 healthcare facilities located throughout the county. They underwent a rigorous six-month training programme to improve their abilities and confidence in order to provide complete care to mothers and their newborns.

Speaking in Kenol during the graduation ceremony, Jacaranda Health Deputy Country Director Job Makoya noted that the Mentors’ programme is designed to nurture, polish and hone the skills of the nurses and midwives stationed in public health facilities with a primary emphasis of managing obstetric emergencies

“The curriculum encompassed Emergencies obstetric and newborn care (EmONC) and offered the mentees practical training on Essential Continuous Medical Education (CMEs) and essential drills,” he said

He added, “As such, the Mentees cohort program covered topics such as PPH, Neonatal Resuscitation, shoulder dystocia, Pregnancy induced hypertension/ eclampsia, respectful maternity care, infection control and prevention management of normal labour and also post-abortion care.“

Dr. Makoya added that the mentees were trained on the crucial drills that are helpful when handling obstetric emergencies and newborn care in order to put an end to preventable maternal newborn deaths by implementing low-cost sustainable solutions that will ultimately improve the standard of care in government health facilities.

“Our nurses and midwives are well equipped to handle normal birth of a non-vigorous baby, normal birth of a vigorous baby with immediate PPH, shoulder dystocia birth of a non-vigorous baby, mild PPH, eclampsia, breech delivery and assisted vacuum delivery (AVD),” he noted.

On his part, Murang’a County Health Executive Committee Member (CEC) Dr. Fredrick K. Mbugua while lauding Jacaranda Health for the Mentors’ programme, assured the participants that the county is relentlessly putting measures in place to ensure that mothers receive quality, dignified and respectable maternal care in the health facilities.

“To achieve the mission of ending maternal newborn deaths, the county is continuously involved in public education, capacity building, improving of infrastructure and partners support which is not only saving us significant resources but also ensuring our frontline health care workers polish their skills,” Dr. Mbugua added.

While skilled antenatal care increased from 97 percent in 2014 to 100 percent in 2022 in Murang’a County, skilled birth attendance is currently at 96 percent (2022), a substantial improvement from 85 percent in 2014.

Maternal mortality is now reported nationally by KDHS 2022 at 357/100,000 live births, which is a decrease from the previous numbers from 2014 of 365/1000 live births.

Additionally, skilled delivery attendance is now at 89 percent, up from 41 percent in 2003, and skilled antenatal care is now at 97 percent.

The Mentors programme is presently being implemented in 21 counties, but Jacaranda Health is seeking to scale it up and expand it to include healthcare professionals throughout the country.

Migori: UDA Officials Condemn Planned Azimio Mass Action

United Democratic Alliance[UDA] members have condemned the planned mass actions by the opposition and Azimio leader Raila Odinga as economic sabotage.

The party chairman in Migori County Phares Oguda Odira said that the planned demonstration scheduled to start on 7th July 2023 will derail the efforts Kenya Kwanza is putting in place to revive the economy.

They said that they want the Azimio leaders led by Raila Odinga to shun the call for mass actions and recognise president William Ruto as duly elected president of Kenya.

The members were speaking in Migori town as they issued a statement to congratulate their branch chairman Phares Oguda Odira for being appointed as one of the directors at the Bomas of Kenya for a period of 3 years effective July 1st.

They also lauded the move by the president to recognise the party leadership at the grassroots level and also enable them secure jobs in the Kenya Kwanza Government.

They called on all youths to shun the call for mass actions and instead on activities that will revive the economy of the country and help food on the table and create job opportunities for themselves.

PS Kello Harsama: Kenya On Right Path Towards Achieving Food Security

Kenya is committed to strengthening African Union-European Union cooperation and strongly supports the agreed interventions for sustainable agri-food production systems to transform the sector and feed its citizens.

Crop Development Principal Secretary (PS) Kello Harsama, who represented Kenya at the AU and EU Agriculture Ministerial Conference in Rome, Italy, said Kenya recognizes the significance of resilient food systems in mitigating the impacts of climate change, reducing food waste, and ensuring access to nutritious food for all.

Harsama underscored the importance of the conference as a major catalyst for agricultural transformative actions in relation to deliberating on resilient food systems and focusing on sustainable agricultural value chains.

“I am confident that this conference will serve as a catalyst for transformative actions, bringing us closer to our shared goal of resilient food systems and sustainable agricultural value chains,” he said.

The government, the PS said, is working on modalities to strengthen existing bilateral trade and explore new world markets for farmers to efficiently access the international market by harmonizing policies that hinder smooth trading.

Harsama said Kenya is on the right path towards achieving food security, adding, “I am happy that President William Ruto’s aggressive diplomatic agenda towards agriculture is bearing fruit. Every other Western country is familiar with Kenya’s food security agenda. This is encouraging and shows our strides towards achieving food security in the country.”

The PS engaged in a further consultative meeting with the President of the International Fund of Agricultural Development (IFAD), Alvaro Lario, to enhance IFAD support to Kenya on sustainable agricultural systems, where he thanked them for their continued support.

On the sidelines of the AU and EU Agriculture Ministerial Conference, Harsama also held talks with Senator the Hon. Murray Watt, the Australian Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries, and Forestry, to discuss the possibility of Kenya exporting Avocado, Macadamia, flowers, fresh vegetables, tea, and coffee to the foreign country.

The leaders agreed to invite Australian manufacturers to come and establish food processing plants in Kenya to boost value addition and export, which will create jobs for Kenyans and accelerate the agricultural value chain.

Meanwhile, Kenya is looking forward to productive deliberations and fruitful outcomes that will shape the future of agriculture in Kenya, Africa, and the European Union.

Police Launch Manhunt For Nine Suspects Who Escaped From Isiolo Police Station

Nine suspected criminals, including adults and juveniles, are on the run after fleeing the Isiolo Police Station in the wee hours of Tuesday morning.

According to reports, the nine, all of whom face pending criminal charges, escaped around 4 a.m. after allegedly breaking the lock to their holding cell.

They were then able to flee the precinct under mysterious circumstances.

Despite the fact that the holding cells are adjacent to the OB desk, officers and police manning the OB desk reportedly did not notice the nine were missing until hours after their escape.

Isiolo Sub-County Police Commander William Kiambi confirmed the incident saying that police have launched a manhunt to apprehend the suspects.

He also stated that police are currently investigating how the criminals broke the lock to their holding cells and escaped unnoticed despite the presence of sentry and OB desk officers.

Cardiff Hold Talks With Wales Captain Ramsey

Cardiff City have held talks with Wales captain Aaron Ramsey over a return to his boyhood club.

Ramsey, 32, is a free agent having turned down the chance to stay at French side Nice.

He has previously refused to rule out the prospect of rejoining Cardiff, having started his career with the Championship club.

Cardiff are known to be keen on a deal but are not thought to be the only club interested in the 82-cap international.

Ramsey came through the ranks at Cardiff, making his debut aged 16 in 2007 before joining Arsenal in 2008. He briefly returned to the Welsh capital for a loan spell in 2011 to aid his recovery from a broken leg.

Ramsey made more than 250 appearances for Arsenal, winning the FA Cup three times, before eventually leaving for Juventus on a free transfer in 2019.

The midfielder has said he would be keen for his next move to be closer to home after his disappointing time in Italy was followed up by a single season with Nice.

Cardiff chairman Mehmet Dalman said last month the Bluebirds would welcome the chance to sign Ramsey, while new manager Erol Bulut did not expand on his interest in securing the signing when pressed on the subject last weekend.

Cardiff are under an EFL embargo that prevents them from paying fees in transfers, but would be able to sign Ramsey given his free agent status.

They had held talks with former Wales captain Gareth Bale last summer, but he opted to join MLS side Los Angeles FC, before retiring from football earlier this year.

Alcaraz Launches Wimbledon Bid As Murray Dreams Big

Carlos Alcaraz prepared to launch his Wimbledon campaign on Tuesday as two-time champion Andy Murray aimed to roll back the years on a damp day at the All England Club.

Tennis’s new golden boy Alcaraz will go into his match against French veteran Jeremy Chardy with a spring in his step after claiming his first title on grass last month.

The Spanish 20-year-old’s triumph at Queen’s, where he beat Alex de Minaur in the final, was his fifth title of the season, and the first of his career on the surface.

The US Open champion is seen as one of the few credible threats to Novak Djokovic, who is targeting a record-equalling eighth men’s Wimbledon crown.

The top seed said his win at Queen’s had given him confidence but that Djokovic, who eased through to the second round on Monday, remains the man to beat.

“I started Queen’s with no expectation to win and I won it,” he said.

“I feel great playing such a great level. The confidence grew a lot. But obviously for me the main favourite here is Djokovic.”

Murray, who plays with a metal hip, takes on fellow British player Ryan Peniston 10 years after his career-defining first win at Wimbledon – the first of three Grand Slam titles.

Despite winning two events on the second-tier Challenger Tour last month, the 36-year-old missed out on a seeding for Wimbledon and has not been beyond the third round of a Grand Slam since 2017.

MURRAY MAGIC

But the 40th-ranked Murray still believes he has what it takes.

“I do believe I’m one of the best grass-court players in the world, and I’m physically feeling really good,” he said. “I prepared well, so there’s no reason why I can’t have a good tournament.”

Tunisia’s Ons Jabeur, last year’s beaten Wimbledon finalist, is due to face Poland’s Magdalena Frech.

Sixth seed Jabeur, who became the first Arab woman to reach a Grand Slam women’s singles final, said she wanted to learn from her run at the All England Club last year.

“I just want to use that experience, use the pressure that I felt last year, to maybe do better this year,” she said.

The Centre Court crowd will celebrate Roger Federer’s achievements at Wimbledon with a special ceremony before play starts on the show court.

The Swiss great, 41, has mostly stayed away from tennis since bowing out in emotional scenes at the Laver Cup in London last September but was similarly honoured at the grass-court event in Halle, Germany, last month.

Women’s top seed Iga Swiatek sailed into the second round on Monday but seventh seed Coco Gauff was shocked by US qualifier Sofia Kenin.

Second seed Aryna Sabalenka, who won the Australian Open this year, and third-seeded defending champion Elena Rybakina are also in action on Tuesday.

Wimbledon chiefs have downplayed concerns over dampness on Centre Court despite a long delay during Djokovic’s first-round match against Pedro Cachin on the opening day of the championships.

Operations director Michelle Dite said there was more moisture in the grass than expected but organisers were not planning to do anything different on Tuesday.

“There was nothing strange,” she said. “It was a set of circumstances with the environmental control in the bowl. There is nothing that’s broken. There is nothing that means we’re not confident in playing today.”
