Pacquiao and Mayweather agree professional rematch

Boxing greats Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather have agreed a professional rematch in September.

Pacquiao, 47, and Mayweather, 48, will fight at Sphere in Las Vegas on Saturday, 19 September, with the bout live on Netflix.

Former world champion Mayweather announced he would come out of retirement for a fourth time last week.

It will be the American’s first professional bout since beating mixed martial arts fighter Conor McGregor with a 10th-round technical knockout in 2017.

Filipino Pacquiao retired from the sport to focus on his political career in 2021 but returned to the ring last July to fight WBC welterweight champion Mario Barrios, who retained his title after a draw.

Mayweather and Pacquiao first met in 2015, in what was billed as the ‘Fight of the Century’ and remains the richest in boxing history.

It was Mayweather who emerged victorious, beating Pacquiao via a wide unanimous decision in Las Vegas.

It is not yet known over how many rounds or at what weight class the rematch will be contested.

Pacquiao, winner of 12 world titles across eight weight classes, said: “Floyd and I gave the world what remains the biggest fight in boxing history.

“The fans have waited long enough. They deserve this rematch.

“I want Floyd to live with the one loss on his professional record and always remember who gave it to him.”

Mayweather, who turns 49 on Tuesday, said: “I already fought and beat Manny once. This time will be the same result.”

Mayweather has won all 50 of his professional fights, with 27 coming by knockout.

He has had a string of exhibition bouts since retiring in 2017 and is scheduled to face Mike Tyson this year.

That is set to be former undisputed world heavyweight champion Tyson’s first fight since the American ended his 19-year retirement in November in a controversial defeat by YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul.

Announcing the end of his retirement on Saturday, Mayweather said: “From my upcoming Mike Tyson event to my next professional fight afterwards: no-one will generate a bigger gate, have a larger global broadcast audience and generate more money with each event than my events.”

Pacquiao, who has 62 wins from his 73 bouts, said in October that the pair were close to agreeing a rematch – but added it was dependent on he and Mayweather being able to “understand each other”.

Their previous meeting in 2015 generated a record 4.6 million pay-per-view buys and a record live gate of $72m at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.

Full details regarding the undercard and ticket availability will be announced in the coming weeks.

Sesko and Lammens allow Man Utd to dream of Champions League

Michael Carrick had a neat way of describing Benjamin Sesko’s assimilation into life at Manchester United.

“He is growing as a player,” said United’s head coach. “Sometimes it’s big steps, sometimes it’s little steps. He has taken some huge ones recently.

“The confidence and belief he is playing with is great to see.”

The mighty strides Sesko has taken in United’s latest two games have placed the club in a superb position to cement a return to the Champions League after a two-year absence.

Without the Slovenian’s contributions off the bench, United would have lost at West Ham on 10 February and drawn with Everton on Monday on their first visit to Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Sesko’s goals have put Carrick’s men out on their own in fourth spot, three points behind Aston Villa and three ahead of Chelsea and Liverpool.

If his stoppage-time volley to earn a point at West Ham was a thing of aesthetic beauty, his latest effort in the 71st minute of the 1-0 win at Everton was a feat of physical excellence.

It was a combination of endurance, running 70 yards at top speed after laying off a pass to Matheus Cunha, and calmness, to steady himself and coolly slot home Bryan Mbeumo’s square pass.

“It was a great finish, a ruthless finish,” said Carrick. “I like the way he put it away with real confidence.”

Watching the game for Sky Sports, former Liverpool and England defender Jamie Carragher looked at the goal admiringly.

“Sesko has gone over 80 yards and then finishes,” Carragher said. “You expect him to be breathing heavily and panting after that. But no, he still has the energy to really celebrate.”

Sesko has taken his goals tally to eight for the season.

Remarkably, he only scored twice under Ruben Amorim, who signed him from RB Leipzig for £73.7m in August 2025.

Now he has six in his latest seven games, starting with three in two matches while Darren Fletcher was in interim charge after Amorim’s dismissal at the start of January.

That return has led many observers to feel Sesko is unlucky not to have made the starting XI for any of the six games Carrick has had at the helm.

United’s boss understands the debate. But he doesn’t feel it is especially important.

“I get why everyone is talking about it and making a big deal of it, but it is not always as extreme,” he said.

“I have got a really good relationship with Ben. We have had some good conversations, and he is in a good place.

“He obviously wants to play, but we have got some good forwards and I can’t speak highly enough of how he has been.”

For Sesko, it is about delivering when his manager asks – and he is brimming with the confidence to do that.

“I believe in me and so do the other players,” Sesko told Sky Sports.

“They know what they are going to get when I arrive in the game. Whether that is five minutes or 90 minutes, it doesn’t really matter. It’s about showing I can deliver if I possibly can and I’m really happy with that.”

‘Brilliant’ Lammens earns Van der Sar comparisons

If Sesko broke Everton’s hearts at one end of the field, another summer recruit, Senne Lammens, did it at the other.

The Belgian goalkeeper kept out a blockbuster strike from Michael Keane, which Moyes felt sure was going in, then dealt superbly with a series of corners dropped under his crossbar as Everton literally tried to force an equaliser.

“Their goalie was brilliant tonight,” was Moyes’ blunt reaction.

“The save he made from Michael, the way he dealt with corner kicks. The pressure we had. For me, their goalkeeper was the best player.”

Carrick is the one who benefits though, just as he is benefiting from the decision of United’s recruitment department to block Amorim’s calls to bring in Emi Martinez from Aston Villa on summer transfer deadline day and instead place their faith in a relatively young £18.1m goalkeeper with just one full season of senior football in Belgium behind him.

Lammens is 23. Sesko is 22. United might not quite be winning trophies with kids, but they have a young generation that is beginning to blossom.

It was brought to Carrick’s attention after the Everton game that his former United team-mate and all-time great goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar was analysing the game on TV with Carragher.

Carrick skilfully navigated the question of whether there are comparisons to be drawn between the two men.

“I’ve got to be careful what I say,” he said.

“I don’t want to be comparing them because I don’t think it’s fair to Senne. But there’s definitely similarities.

“You want a goalkeeper to be reliable and trustworthy. Instead of creating a chaos, you want him to take the chaos away and calm things down. I think Senne is that.

“He’s quite quiet at times and unassuming, but he’s got real steel. It’s a big role for some, and it’s about being comfortable in your environment.

“Sometimes it takes time, sometimes not, but he has that calmness and composure. It helps those in front of him an awful lot.”

At the start of the season, United’s stated aim was to get back into Europe.

Even internally, it was felt reaching the Europa League was the most realistic target, and financial estimates were created around that.

However, in the wake of Amorim’s exit, director of football Jason Wilcox spoke to the players about reaching the Champions League.

The difference in status and finance is huge.

United have now gone 10 consecutive Premier League games without defeat for the first time since a run of 14 between January and May 2021 under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

From their current position, with no European distractions, which is something Villa, Chelsea and Liverpool all have, it would be a major disappointment for them if United were not to seal a return to European football’s top table.

“Manchester United are now virtually guarantees for one of the Champions League places,” said Carragher. “I can’t see them not making it.”

Can Real Madrid, Inter, Atletico survive do-or-die champions league knockout?

The UEFA Champions League knockout stage reaches a pivotal stage on Tuesday, with Real Madrid, Inter Milan, and Atletico Madrid all facing crucial second-leg matches.

Each club must deliver under pressure to secure a spot in the last 16, and fans are bracing for high-stakes drama across Europe.

Inter Milan vs Bodo Glimt

Inter Milan face a challenging task after a 3-1 defeat to Bodo Glimt in the first leg. Serie A leaders must win by at least two goals to overturn the deficit. Bodo Glimt, who have impressed in Europe this season with wins over Manchester City and Atletico Madrid, remain a formidable opponent.

Inter Milan possible starting lineup: Sommer; Bisseck, Akanji, Bastoni; Henrique, Barella, Calhanoglu, Mkhitaryan, Dimarco; Thuram, Esposito

Bodo Glimt possible starting lineup: Haikin; Sjovold, Bjortuft, Gundersen, Bjorkan; Evjen, Berg, Fet; Blomberg, Hogh, Hauge

Prediction: Inter Milan to win 2-0, overturning the deficit and advancing, while a 1-1 draw would see Bodo Glimt pull off a huge upset.

Real Madrid vs Benfica

Real Madrid head into the second leg with a narrow 1-0 advantage over Benfica. The Spanish giants have been in strong form, winning four of their last five matches across competitions and scoring 12 goals while conceding just five.

At home, they are expected to assert control and close out the tie.

Real Madrid possible starting lineup: Courtois; Alexander-Arnold, Asensio, Rudiger, Carreras; Valverde, Guler, Tchouameni, Guler; Mbappe, Vinicius

Benfica possible starting lineup: Trubin; Dedic, Araujo, Otamendi, Dahl; Rios, Aursnes; Lukebakio, Rafa, Schjelderup; Pavlidis

Prediction: Real Madrid to win 2-0 and secure progression to the last 16.

Atletico Madrid vs Club Brugge

Atletico Madrid travel to Belgium after a thrilling 3-3 draw in the first leg. Both sides have performed well domestically, with Atletico defeating Espanyol 4-2 and Brugge narrowly edging Leuven 2-1.

Form has been a concern for Atletico in recent weeks, with just two wins from their last five matches across all competitions, alongside one draw and two defeats.

Even though they have a wary form, Atletico’s attacking quality should help them edge the Belgians in a high-scoring clash.

Atletico Madrid possible starting lineup: Oblak; Molina, Pubill, Hancko, Ruggeri; Simeone, Koke, Llorente, Lookman; Sorloth, Alvarez

Club Brugge possible starting lineup: Mignolet; Seys, Mechele, Ordonez, Sabbe; Vanaken, Vetlesen, Stankovic; Diakhon, Tresoldi, Tzolis

Prediction: Atletico Madrid to win 3-1 and advance comfortably to the next round.

Probe underway after illness kills 72 tigers in tourist park

Authorities in Chiang Mai, a city in northern Thailand, are investigating the deaths of dozens of tigers at a popular tourist attraction this month.

Seventy-two tigers died in the span of less than two weeks across two facilities of Tiger Kingdom Chiang Mai, a park where visitors can touch and interact with tigers.

The local livestock department said samples from the tigers showed canine distemper virus – though authorities have not confirmed how the outbreak happened.

Officials said on Monday that they had cremated and buried the remains of the tigers.

They were among more than 240 tigers living across the two facilities at Tiger Kingdom Chiang Mai, according to local media.

“By the time we realised they were sick, it was already too late,” Somchuan Ratanamungklanon, director of the national livestock department, told local media – noting that it was harder to detect sickness in tigers compared to animals like cats or dogs.

The provincial livestock office in Chiang Mai said last week that samples from the tigers’ carcasses tested positive for canine distemper virus, as well as a bacteria associated with respiratory disease.

Canine distemper virus is a highly contagious disease that attacks the host’s respiratory, gastrointestinal and nervous systems. While it is typically found among dogs, it can also infect big cats – often fatally.

The provincial livestock office had earlier said preliminary tests showed the tigers had been infected with feline parvovirus. Some local officials had also initially suspected the outbreak might have stemmed from contaminated raw chicken meat fed to the tigers, the Bangkok Post reported.

Raw chicken was also suspected as the cause of a major bird flu outbreak at a tiger zoo in Chonburi province in 2004. In that case, nearly 150 tigers died or were euthanised to prevent further spread of the influenza.

The disease control department said over the weekend that while none of the veterinarians or other staff working in the Chiang Maitiger enclosures had fallen ill from canine distemper virus, they had been placed under observation for 21 days, Thai PBS reported.

Animal rights groups say this case highlights the poor living conditions of captive tigers used for entertainment in Thailand.

Wildlife Friends Foundation Thailand said in a statement that the tigers’ deaths exposed the “extreme vulnerability of captive wildlife facilities to infectious disease”.

“Tragedies like this would be far less likely to happen” if tourists “stayed away” from these attractions, Peta Asia told AFP.

Tiger Kingdom Chiang Mai has been temporarily closed for two weeks as officials carry out disinfection work.

Mother, 3 children accused of hiring hitman to murder their own father over land

A shocking family tragedy has left residents of Bahati, Nakuru County, in disbelief, after a mother and her three children allegedly hired a hitman to kill their 73-year-old father.

The case has ignited public outrage and drawn attention to the darker side of family disputes over property in Kenya.

Neighbours described feeling stunned when news of the alleged plot surfaced.

According to locals, the family had been embroiled in a bitter disagreement over land, which appears to have escalated into a violent plan.

Joyce Wanjiru, one of the deceased father’s daughters, reportedly discovered him in his home with serious head injuries.

“We rushed him to the hospital immediately, but unfortunately, he passed away,” a relative said, struggling with grief.

Another witness described a disturbing scene outside the home, claiming that the accused mother and her children were feigning sorrow.

“They were crying, but it didn’t seem genuine. Even their tears felt forced,” the witness noted.

Evidence of Violence
Police investigations revealed two blood-stained wooden rods hidden in a pit latrine at the family residence, believed to have been used in the assault.

A granddaughter of the deceased disclosed that her grandfather had previously sustained minor injuries from earlier incidents, which he had tried to dismiss.

“They reportedly tried to poison him first, but when that failed, he started eating elsewhere,” the granddaughter said.

“The disputes over land had been ongoing for a long time. Every child wanted their share of the inheritance.”

The details suggest a chilling pattern of premeditated attempts on his life, escalating from subtle harm to a fatal attack.

Peter Munya Dismisses Viral Photo Reportedly with President Ruto at State House

Party of National Unity (PNU) leader Peter Munya has dismissed a viral photo of him with President William Ruto at State House.

Speaking on Monday, February 23 night, Munya flagged the photo circulating on social media as fake.

The former Cabinet Secretary wondered how he could be in two places at the same time.

“Someone can be in two places at the same time?” Munya posed.

Allies of the PNU party leader have also flagged the AI-generated photo, accusing the government side of being desperate.

File image of Peter Munya and Fred Matiang’i in Ekerenyo, Nyamira County.

“How desperate can Ruto be? Yesterday, Ruto’s people were claiming that he was with Peter Munya at State House, yet he was in Kisii, saying one term,” Munya’s ally Chege Majuice stated.

The former Meru Governor on Monday joined United Opposition leaders, led by Fred Matiang’i, for a tour in Kisii.

The opposition leaders, who are on a three-day tour to Kisii and Nyamira, held several stops in the two counties to popularize their agenda.

Notably, this comes days after the Jubilee party announced a cooperation deal with PNU.

Matiang’i, on Wednesday, February 18, held a meeting with Munya and other PNU officials, and the two parties agreed to formally work together.

As part of the deal, PNU has agreed not to field a presidential candidate in the 2027 General Election.

“PNU has endorsed Dr. Fred Matiang’i as its presidential candidate for the 2027 General Election. Matiang’i represents discipline in public service, courage in decision-making, and a track record of results in education reform, security coordination, and public administration,” Jubilee said in a statement.

The former ruling party stated that the partnership with PNU was a commitment to rescue the economy, restore dignity to public institutions, empower young people, and return honesty to government.
