Divers recover bodies of seven Chinese tourists from bottom of Lake Baikal

BBC -Russian authorities say divers have recovered the bodies of seven Chinese tourists and a Russian driver who died after their mini-bus plunged under the ice to the bottom of Lake Baikal in Siberia.

Irkutsk regional Governor Igor Kobzev offered his “deepest condolences to the families and friends of the victims”. He earlier said one Chinese tourist had managed to escape.

The depth at the site of Friday’s accident was 18m (59ft), and the divers had to use underwater cameras to search for the bodies.

Baikal – the world’s deepest lake with a maximum depth of 1,642m (5,387ft) – is a popular tourist destination. It often freezes during harsh winters and has seen a number of deadly accidents over the years.

The bus fell into three-metre-wide ice fissure on Friday, Kobzev said in a post on Telegram.

“I would like to remind you once again that going out onto Lake Baikal’s ice is not just prohibited right now. It’s mortally dangerous,” the governor said, urging tourists to use only official tour operators.

He added that all the Chinese tourists – including a 14-year-old child – had travelled independently.

A criminal investigation into the cause of the tragedy is now under way.

Shortly afterwards Kobzev took to social media again, saying that “sadly, even this tragedy hasn’t taught people a lesson”, informing that six people trapped in their cars had been rescued in two separate incidents on Friday and Saturday.

In late January, a Chinese tourist died after a car he was travelling overturned on the frozen surface of Lake Baikal.

IG Kanja Attends Thanksgiving Ceremony in Nyeri Sparking Public Scrutiny

The Inspector General of the National Police Service, Mr. Douglas Kanja, joined the Chief of Staff and Head of the Public Service, Mr. Felix Koskei, alongside other senior government officials and members of the Catholic Church, for a thanksgiving ceremony held in honour of the Principal Secretary for Gender, Anne Wang’ombe, in Nyeri County.

In his address, the Inspector General reaffirmed the National Police Service’s commitment to ensuring the safety and security of all Kenyans, residents, and visitors. He emphasised that security is a shared responsibility, requiring collaborative efforts between the police and the public.

This attendance follows a period of intense scrutiny for IG Kanja in the region.

In November 2025, the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) called for his resignation after he attended a presidential event in Kieni, Nyeri, which critics labeled a political rally. The National Police Service (NPS) defended his presence as standard security protocol.

IG Kanja recently faced heavy criticism from leaders like former DP Rigathi Gachagua following a teargas incident at ACK Witima Church in Othaya during a previous thanksgiving service in January 2026.

Among those present at the event were Cabinet Secretary Ms. Hannah Wendot Cheptumo, Secretary to the Cabinet Ms. Mercy Wanjau, and Principal Secretaries Mr. Alex Wachira, Mr. Patrick Kilemi, Ms. Betsy Njagi, Ms. Mary Muthoni, Mr. John Mbugua, Dr. Salome Beacco, Mr. Elijah Mwangi, Mr. Joseph Motari, and Dr. Aurelia Rono.

Also in attendance was the Kilifi Woman Representative, Ms. Gertrude Mbeyu, together with parastatal directors, chief executive officers, and other leaders.

Wesley Fofana sees red as Chelsea suffer last-gasp draw with Burnley

By Bonface Mulyungi

Chelsea’s 10 men were stunned by a Zian Flemming header in the third minute of added time as Burnley stole a 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge.

João Pedro’s goal in the fourth minute had looked like being the winner but the Blues wilted terribly after Wesley Fofana’s sending off for a second booking 20 minutes from the end, leaving the door ajar for Flemming to score from a James Ward-Prowse corner.

Chelsea are much improved since Liam Rosenior took charge but they still look unsure of how to finish off opponents.

The visitors had barely a sniff after João Pedro had shovelled Pedro Neto’s cross over the line, with Cole Palmer showing some of his very best form as Scott Parker’s struggling side were made to look like they were a Championship team already.

Yet Chelsea’s issue this season has been ill-discipline, and they were shown an eighth red card of the campaign when Fofana went in late on Ward-Prowse.

Flemming’s goal was painful to take and it ought to have been worse, Jacob Bruun Larsen powering a free header over the bar with virtually the final action.

Benfica produce scintillating attacking display at the Luz to cruise to 3-0 victory over AVS

By Bonface Mulyungi

SL Benfica returned to the Estádio da Luz to take on AVS this weekend with the opportunity to make up ground on rivals Sporting CP and FC Porto. These two clubs found themselves on opposite ends of the table going into Saturday’s clash. Benfica, currently third in the league, have not lost a match in the Primeira Liga this season and have won five of their last six in the competition. Meanwhile, the Vila das Aves club sat at the bottom of the table with just eight points from 22 matches. No team has conceded more goals than AVS, with João Henriques’ side allowing 54 goals already in the league.

Despite AVS’s 3-0 victory last weekend over Estoril Praia, this was a match that the Eagles were expected to command, and José Mourinho’s side did just that. It became clear early on that AVS were outmatched in this tie, with Benfica dominating the possession and chances from the opening minute onwards. Goals from Alexander Bah, Enzo Barrenechea and Rafa Silva gave the Lisbon side a comfortable lead going into the half. The second half was more of the same, and while AVS showed some steel, there was little chance of a comeback after a one-sided first half.

The win sees Benfica move to 55 points on the season, three points behind Sporting and four points behind Porto (although the Dragons do have a game in hand).

First half blitz gives Benfica commanding lead

It didn’t take long for Benfica to get going. Some cohesive build up work down the left side between Schjelderup and Pavlidis saw the ball eventually drop to the latter in the box and the striker lashed a low shot. AVS keeper Adriel did well to get down and save the attempt, but Bah was on hand to collect the rebound and thrash home his first goal of the campaign.

In the 15th minute, it was Schjelderup and Pavildis once again tormenting the AVS defenders. Some slick passing inside the box ended with a close-range shot for the Greek striker. His attempt, though, drifted just wide of the post.

The home side continued to control the possession, and in the 26th minute, that nearly led to a second. This time, it was Enzo Barrenechea blazing his shot over the goal.

Barrenechea, not known for his goalscoring ability, was undeterred, and just three minutes later, he was able to take advantage of some poor defending from a corner, unleashing a powerful left-footed shot that left Adriel with little chance. A delightful strike from the Argentine central midfielder to record his second of the campaign.

Pavlidis continues to show his quality as the game progressed. A phenomenal run from the centre circle, combined with some smart passing, saw the forward connect with a perfectly timed through ball from Schedlerup. His right-footed toe poke, though, was aimed directly at Adriel.

Rafa’s wondergoal puts Benfica three up

In the 43rd minute, a moment of magic from Rafa Silva. Regarded as a fan favourite at the club, the player, who recently returned after a stint in Turkey with Beşiktaş, pulled off a stunning goal just before the half. A low cross from Sidney Cabral found the 32-year-old just outside the six-yard box. Rafa’s first touch may not have been perfect, leaving the ball rolling around under his legs. He made up for his first touch with a brilliant improvised rabona, wrapping his right foot around to clip the ball past a crowded box and into the net. A special goal from a player who made his Benfica debut nearly a decade ago.

The visitors were completely outplayed in the opening 45 minutes. There were few positives to take from their first half performance. Babatunde Akinsola did his best to try and penetrate down the right wing, but aside from a few dangerous runs from the Nigerian, AVS hardly troubled Benfica’s back four.

Benfica continue to pepper AVS goal in second half

AVS, shell-shocked in the opening half, came out with a more positive approach in the second. Henriques started to push bodies forward and even brought on Óscar Perea and Tiago Galletto as he looked to inject some energy into his team.

Benfica still maintained the majority of the possession and were quick to fill any gaps on the pitch. Barrenechea and Ríos controlled the midfield while the constant threat of Schjelderup and Cabral down the wings ensured AVS’ defenders could not step too far out of line.

In the 63rd minute, a perfectly weighted cross nearly found Ríos for Benfica’s fourth. In the 67th minute, it was Cabral with the near miss when his shot bounced off the post. Pavlidis was inches away from his first of the match in the 70th after collecting the ball, turning, and striking a low shot that was deflected just wide. In the 77th minute, a rocket from Antonio Silva sailed just over the bar.

La Liga leaders Real Madrid stung by late Osasuna winner

By Bonface Musyoka

Champions Barcelona trail Madrid by two points but can overtake them on Sunday if they beat Levante at Camp Nou.

Alvaro Arbeloa’s Madrid put on a below-par performance in Pamplona and fell behind to an Ante Budimir penalty, before Vinicius Junior pulled the visitors level.

The second leg of Madrid’s Champions League play-off against Jose Mourinho’s Benfica on Wednesday seemed to play on their minds as they failed to kick on at El Sadar.

Vinicius, who scored a sensational goal to give Madrid a slender first-leg lead but was then the victim of alleged racial abuse, thought he had earned his team a point before Garcia blasted home the winner.

“It was not a good game from us… we have to play a lot better,” Arbeloa told reporters.

“Nobody likes to lose, us least of all, but we’re not hurt. There’s a long way to go.

“We had control at some points but we lacked speed in our play… on Wednesday we have another final, another game that is very important for us.”

Croatian target man Budimir curled narrowly wide of Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois’s far post early on, the first of many problems he gave the visitors.

The Belgian stopper made an excellent save a few minutes later, after Budimir tried to nod home Ruben Garcia’s cross under pressure from Alvaro Carreras.

Budimir also clipped the post with a header as Osasuna impressed, with their victory helping them rise to ninth.

Madrid defender David Alaba came close when Alejandro Catena blocked his shot, shortly before the hosts took the lead.

Budimir burst into the area and went down under a challenge from Courtois. Although he was initially booked for diving a VAR review showed the goalkeeper stood on his foot.

The veteran forward took the resulting penalty himself and sent Courtois the wrong way to give Osasuna the lead.

“I knew it was a penalty and I wanted to stay cool (while it was being reviewed),” said Budimir.

Osasuna sat deep at times in the second half, looking to fend off 15-time European champions Madrid.

Arda Guler came close with a vicious shot that flew just over.

Chasing an equaliser, Arbeloa threw on creative duo Trent Alexander-Arnold and Brahim Diaz and his team began to take control.

French superstar Kylian Mbappe put the ball in the back of Osasuna’s net but had edged offside, although the equaliser was not long in coming.

Fede Valverde charged into the box with the ball, unperturbed by Osasuna’s defenders bouncing off him, before crossing for Vinicius to tuck home.

It was the Brazilian’s fifth goal in his last four games across all competitions, having found his best form since Arbeloa replaced Xabi Alonso at the helm in January.

– Wasted chance –

Mbappe, La Liga’s top goalscorer, should have put Madrid ahead with 10 minutes to go but Javi Galan brilliantly blocked his shot.

Alexander-Arnold curled a free-kick wide as the clock ticked down and it looked like Madrid were left ruing two points dropped, when the third was taken away from them too.

Raul Garcia cut inside the sliding Raul Asencio brilliantly and fired across Courtois and in at the far post.

The striker’s celebrations were cut short by the offside flag but a VAR review showed he was onside and the goal was given.

It was the first time Osasuna have beaten Madrid in La Liga for 15 years.

“It’s an incredible feeling… I think (that fact) is crazy. The fans deserved a victory like this after so many years,” Raul Garcia told DAZN.

“When I saw (Asencio) coming I knew he was going to go to ground and after that I stayed calm to swerve him and was able to score.”

Real Betis, fifth, were held 1-1 at home against Rayo Vallecano earlier Saturday, leaving them three points behind fourth-placed Atletico Madrid.

Diego Simeone’s side host Espanyol later on, aiming to make amends after last weekend’s 3-0 defeat by Rayo.

Ugandan Abducted Besigye in deplorable state in filthy cell

By Bonface Mulyungi

Political detainee Dr. Kizza Besigye who was abducted in Kenya reportedly extremely weak.

Following his abduction in November 2024 in Kenya, Dr. Besigye has been held in Luzira Maximum Security Prison under heavy military security.

While reports indicate he was recently allowed access to his personal doctor, his family has expressed deep concern that this, combined with a previous, rare, and short-lived, hospital visit for “monitoring,” indicates a worsening condition.

“I have seen him twice this week. He is in a terrible situation. The Government of Uganda is being insensitive”, Besigye’s wife said.

Winnie Byanyima has further stated that the family live in fear, that Gen Muhoozi or any of his soldiers could kill Besigye.

“Uganda is now a naked dictatorship state where our lives are in the hands of the president and his son, we are leaving in fear that Gen. Muhoozi could kill him”. She stated.

Winnie Byanyima, Executive Director of UNAIDS, has stated that the Ugandan government is acting with insensitivity, arguing that Besigye needs specialized hospital care immediately. She has demanded his immediate release, arguing that his continued detention in such conditions is, in effect, a slow-motion assassination.

Although the Supreme Court ruling in Uganda recently declared that civilians should not be tried in military courts, Besigye was still being held under military jurisdiction for a time, facing charges of treason and illegal possession of firearms. In February 2025, it was reported that he was, however, transferred to a civilian court for these charges.

DCI arrests key suspects in efforts to dismantle robbery network in Nairobi, Kiambu, Kajiado.

By Bonface Mulyungi

A major relief has swept through Kajiado County, Kiambu County and Nairobi following the arrest of key suspects linked to a series of violent robberies and murders targeting traders in recent weeks.

For months, wines and spirits outlets in these areas operated under fear.

A gang armed with crude weapons struck swiftly, dispossessing traders of cash and stock. Premises were vandalised, and some incidents left communities traumatised.

What initially seemed like isolated events soon revealed a pattern of coordination. Surveillance of targets, planned attacks, and organised disposal of stolen goods pointed to a structured criminal network.

In a carefully planned, intelligence-led operation, the authorities finally closed in on the suspects.

Investigators say the operation’s breakthrough came with the arrest of the alleged mastermind.

He was apprehended in Nakuru County after weeks of forensic tracking and surveillance. Police describe this arrest as a critical step in unmasking the syndicate’s operations.

Several accomplices were also arrested. One suspect, believed to have received and distributed stolen alcoholic consignments, was arrested in Ruiru.

Another, alleged to have provided vehicles for surveillance, getaway missions and transport of stolen goods, was cornered in the Juja area. Investigators say these arrests dismantled the logistical backbone of the gang.

Following the arrests, victims from Ongata Rongai and Karen visited Kikuyu Police Station to identify recovered property.

The items included assorted alcoholic products marked with unique trader identification labels. Authorities say this will help link stolen property to specific incidents.

Forensic experts from the DCI’s Photographic Imaging and Acoustics Unit are analysing CCTV footage from affected outlets. Officials said the visual and acoustic evidence will corroborate witness statements and strengthen prosecutions.

The suspects remain in custody while processing and arraignment procedures are finalised.

Police stations handling related incidents have been asked to continue supporting the investigation to ensure no lead is overlooked and all victims are heard.

In a statement, the DCI highlighted the role of the public in cracking the case. “Security is a shared responsibility, and together we are dismantling organised crime one syndicate at a time,” the agency said.

Authorities emphasised that information from the public was crucial to locating the suspects and recovering stolen property.

The DCI cautioned that investigations are ongoing and more arrests could follow as the case unfolds. Authorities are also working to trace any remaining stolen goods and ensure that all victims are compensated or have their property returned where possible.

Community leaders welcomed the arrests, saying traders now feel safer. One Ongata Rongai trader said, “We can finally operate without fear. The streets feel safer and the police are doing their job.”

The arrests mark a significant achievement in Kenya’s fight against organised crime targeting businesses.

Experts say the case demonstrates the effectiveness of intelligence-led policing, forensic analysis, and community engagement in tackling syndicates that use violence and intimidation.

Authorities continue to urge members of the public to report suspicious activity. Officials say timely information is key to preventing further crimes and bringing offenders to justice.

GEMA to ODM: DP position belongs to the mountain, not the lake

GEMA leaders have declared that the DP position belongs to them and its non-negotiable.
Speaking in Nyeri, MP Dancan Mathenge told those eying for the position to concentrate elsewhere.
The leaders were reacting to suggestions from ODM that they are eying for the position in 2027, currently held by Professor Kithure Kindiki who succeeded DCP leader Rigathi Gachagua after the impeachment.

Duncan Mathenge emphasized the region’s hold on the deputy presidency, stating it is part of earlier political agreements that should not be reopened for debate. This was reinforced by other Mt. Kenya leaders maintaining that it’s non-negotiable stance, citing the significant voting power of Mount Kenya and the competence of the current Deputy President.

Some of the UDA leaders have issued warning that if the DP seat is not retained for the region, leaders and voters from Mt. Kenya may consider exiting the broad-based government arrangement.

The current office holder Prof. Kithure Kindiki on his side has dismissed succession talk stating that the seat is going nowhere.

Other regions have also expressed interest for the slot, endorsing PCS Musalia Mudavadi to deputize Ruto in 2027.

These declarations come amid reports that the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) is seeking the DP slot in future political agreements with the ruling UDA party.
The battle for the DP position comes at a time when GEMA is in political limbo following a fallout out between Gachagua and President Ruto.

Gachagua: Ruto has disenfranchised Kalenjins to please ghost supporters

The former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has declared the Kalenjin community as a “solid ally” of the GEMA community and that the two communities will continue working together for Kenya’s progress.

Speaking in an interview with Kalenjin Media stations, Gachagua said the enemy of GEMA is President Ruto, his former boss and not the whole community. “I have no problem with the Kalenjin community; they have not wronged me even once”. He stated.
He clarified that his fallout with President William Ruto should not be viewed as a conflict with the Kalenjin nation. He claimed that while the community supported the current administration, they have been “shortchanged” regarding development projects like roads and water.

Gachagua He also sought to assuage fears that he would sideline the community if his opposition outfit dethrones President Ruto in 2027.

“Rais alipitishwa na kura ya Mlima na ya Wakalenjin…sasa nikamwuliza rais, kama tumesahau hawa Wakalenjin, walikuvumilia miaka tano, wewe umechukua kila kitu ukapelekea Nyanza, hutembelei hawa watu…ukija Kericho, Bomet, unakuja interdenomination…mbona hukuji kufungua project? Mimi nilimwuliza,” he said.

The Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) leader said the Kalenjin community, despite having the President hail from their region, has largely been neglected,

“Hawa wakalenjin hawana mtetezi; wabunge wamenyamaza, masenator pia wamenyamaza, nani atatetea hao?” He posed.

He said that while he fell out with his former boss, his relationship with the Kalenjin nation remaines unscathed, seeking to allay fears that he would lock them out of government were he to form it in the next elections.

“There is no one who will discriminate against the Kalenjins. They have not wronged anyone. We have a problem with one person, whom we will remove from power when the time comes. Kalenjins are good people. They have worked and developed this country. Just because Ruto has wronged us, it doesn’t mean the whole Kalenjin community has done it,” he said.

At the same time, Gachagua says he will be visiting parts of Kalenjin land enroute to his engagements in Kisii next week.

This is Why Kikuyus are Backing Kalonzo for 2027 -Mutula Jrn. Explains Why Gikuyu Nation is Backing Kalonzo Presidency in 2027.

By Bonface Mulyungi

Governor Mutula Jrn. has conscionably claimed that kikuyu community has been politically cornered by President Ruto and is now using Wiper Leader Kalonzo Musyoka as human shield.

Speaking at Kalonzo’s Tseikuru backyard during the burial of the Wiper Leader kin, Mutula Junior claimed that this is the second time the Gikuyu community is using Kalonzo for survival after the 2007 post-election violence during which the Late President Kibaki appointed Kalonzo Musyoka as his Vice to tame Raila Odinga and ODM.

“My father, the late Mutula Kilonzo Senior called me on 31st Dec 2007 and told me he had signed a political deal for Kalonzo to become Kenya’s Vice President, GEMA did not like but Kalonzo they wanted him as their survival.”

The two term Makueni Senator urged the Kamba community to take advantage of GEMA misfortune and rally behind Kalonzo for the Presidency.

“Now that our Athonua ‘MASHEMEJI’ are cornered by President Ruto, we must take advantage of their misfortune and seize the presidency” Mutula Jnr. said.

https://www.facebook.com/share/v/186SbQBCns

He said that Kalonzo was the most sought-after presidential candidate in Kenya and told his supporters to grab Sifuna moniker
‘MIMI NDIO SIFUNA’ by replacing it with ‘MIMI NDIO KALONZO’ as a way of bradding the wiper leader.

https://www.facebook.com/share/v/1HyEUuqpnA

Mutula said, the Gikuyu community will never vote for Kalonzo unless they are under pressure und fearing for their political lives.

“Now they are cornered, we saved them in 2007, but they abandoned us, this time President Ruto has tamed them and now they are seeking political direction through the wiper leader which we will gladly support.”

https://www.facebook.com/share/v/1KbC1MQPyC

Junior said that Kenya must make history in 2027 by rejecting what he termed as dangerous, thieves and murderous leaders rallying for Kalonzo’s presidency in 2027.

He called on the locals to reject Ruto-led projects calling them as enticement to attract cheap votes. “Even if they tell you they will build roads say one term, we must make history in this country, it will be a tragedy, they have killed our children and we can’t forget, we can’t afford to re-elect them” Mutula stated.

https://www.facebook.com/share/v/1Dzap5WND3

Further, Mutula faulted the Kitui elected leaders who are aligning with Ruto Kenya Kwanza gov’t claiming that this is disrespect to the Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, calling for their removal through the ballot in 2027.
