Police Officer Among Five Lynched in Kericho after Allegedly Robbing Sacco Treasurer of Sh1.1 million

One of the five men who were lynched by an angry mob in Koitaburot, Soin Sigowet after robbing a Sacco treasurer of Sh1.1 million moments after he withdrew from a bank in Muhoroni was a serving police officer.

An identification card found on the body of one of the victims showed he was Jayson Kamau of Koru police station.

Police also recovered a pair of handcuffs belonging to the police.

Also recovered was a police pocket phone. Police said the incident was unfortunate and isolated.
Police said the gang trailed the victim before ambushing and abducting him.

They then tried to flee using the West Valley Sugar Road in Kericho County on February 17, 2026.
He raised an alarm alerting a mob including boda boda riders that joined the hunt on the attackers.

Attempts by the gang to flee after staging the robbery were thwarted as residents who got wind of the situation swung into action.
They stoned them to death.

The police said they did not know the whereabouts of the cash that was stolen. The car that the five suspects were using was vandalized in the drama and set on fire.

Police officers who arrived at the scene a little too late recovered a toy pistol and fake vehicle registration plates, items believed to have been used by the robbers.

Police said the gang had been under surveillance for weeks.
They seemed to have had prior information on the transaction before they struck.

The sub-county Police Commander, Soin Sigowet Lawrence Kisini confirmed the incident and said they are investigating it.

He said they are investigating how the officer was found in the company of the suspects.

The bodies were moved to the mortuary pending an identification and autopsy, police said.

Top Mt. Kenya Parties Endorse Fred Matiang’i for 2027 Presidency

Jubilee Party presidential candidate Fred Matiang’i has announced a cooperation deal with the Party of National Unity(PNU).

Matiang’i met with PNU Party Leader Peter Munya on Wednesday, February 18, and the two have agreed to formally work together.

As part of the deal, PNU has agreed not to field a presidential candidate in the 2027 General Election.

“PNU has endorsed Dr Fred Matiang’i as its presidential candidate for the 2027 General Election.  Matiang’i represents discipline in public service, courage in decision-making, and a track record of results in education reform, security coordination, and public administration,” the Jubilee Party wrote.

The Jubilee Party stated that the partnership was a commitment to rescue the economy, restore dignity to public institutions, empower young people, and return honesty to government.

Jubilee Deputy Party Leader Jeremiah Kioni lauded the political pact, terming it a sacrifice for the greater good.

“There comes a moment in the life of every nation when patriotism must rise above personality, when country must be placed firmly above individual ambition.

“The journey ahead will demand courage, unity, and truth. But today, we choose nation over noise, integrity over intrigue, and hope over hollow slogans,” Kioni wrote.

Earlier, Jubilee Party had insisted that Matiang’i was better placed to lead the charge to unseat President William Ruto in 2027.

Kioni declared that the party would undertake a campaign drive to popularise the party and amass a huge following.

He argued that numbers will be a crucial factor when the United Opposition sits down and selects its presidential flagbearer.

Matiang’i will face off with Eugene Wamalwa, David Maraga, Rigathi Gachagua, and Martha Karua for a chance to face Ruto on the ballot.

New HIV Prevention Injection Arrives in Kenya

Kenya received its first consignment of 21,000 starter doses of Lenacapavir, a revolutionary twice-yearly HIV prevention injection, on Tuesday night, February 17, 2026.

Kenya is the first East African nation to receive the drug, which is a long-acting form of Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP).

Unlike daily oral pills, Lenacapavir is administered as an injection every six months, providing a “preventative shield” for HIV-negative individuals at high risk.

High-priority groups, including adolescent girls, young women, and pregnant or breastfeeding women. Implementation begins in early March 2026.

Initial Coverage in 15 high-burden counties have been selected for the first phase: Lakeside: Kisumu, Homa Bay, Siaya, and Migori.Urban & Others: Nairobi, Mombasa, Nakuru, Kiambu, Machakos, Kajiado, Busia, Kilifi, Kakamega, Kisii, and Uasin Gishu.

In each county, 10 facilities—including referral hospitals and youth-friendly clinics—will provide the service.

Through negotiations with the Global Fund, the annual cost per patient has been reduced from approximately $42,000 to about KSh 7,800 (roughly KSh 3,900 to KSh 6,000 per shot).

An additional 12,000 continuation doses are expected in April 2026, followed by a further 25,000 doses donated by the US Department of State between August and September.

The National AIDS and STI Control Programme (NASCOP) will oversee the distribution and clinical training. Health officials emphasize that Lenacapavir is neither a vaccine nor a cure and does not protect against other sexually transmitted infections (STIs).

Police recover guns, grenades in Dadaab, foil planned terror attack during Ramadhan

Plans by the Somalia-based terror group Al-Shabaab to carry out a major attack in Nairobi during the holy month of Ramadhan were foiled following months of intelligence-led operations, security agencies have said.

In a statement on Wednesday, February 18, Counter Terrorism Policing said the plot was aimed at causing mass casualties in the capital during the holy month.

The agency revealed that the operation was the result of prolonged intelligence work and covert monitoring of suspects linked to Al-Shabaab.

“Plans by the terrorist group Al-Shabaab to kill many Kenyans in Nairobi have once again been foiled by the intelligence agency.

“Months of surveillance and covert intelligence gathering on a terror network operating within the Dadaab refugee camps led to the recovery of arms and ammunition including 600 bullets, pistols, grenades, explosives, and drugs all destined for targets in Nairobi,” the statement read.

According to the agency, the suspects had timed the planned attack to coincide with Ramadhan and were also considering additional criminal activities.

“The terrorists, who had planned to carry out the attack during the month of Ramadhan, were also exploring possibilities of kidnapping foreigners and hijacking vehicles,” the statement further read.

The agency assured Kenyans that security teams remain vigilant and committed to protecting the country from extremist threats.

“Nairobi remains safe because of the brave young men and women in our security agencies who spend long hours tracking down dangerous terrorists and criminals,” the statement concluded.

Mombasa Woman Appeals to Public after Best Friend Allegedly Steals Her Baby

A mother in Mombasa County has appealed to the public to help find her five-month-old baby, allegedly stolen by her best friend.

Speaking to the media on Wednesday, February 18, the mother claimed that her friend, whom she hosted in her house for three months, stole her infant child.

She revealed that the last time she saw her baby was on February 7, when she left it under the care of her friend to attend a service.

“I would always leave the baby with her whenever I went to get lunch money from my husband. I told her that I was going for worship, and she assured me that she would not leave the house, so I left the baby with her.

“When I came back at 5 pm, she was nowhere to be seen, and neither was my child,” the mother recounted amid tears.

A neighbour who had seen the suspect leaving with the child stated that the woman had told her that the baby’s parents were okay with it.

Upon his return from work, the baby’s father, Kahindi Ziro, decided to look out for her daughter as the two had not returned by nightfall.

“I waited until 9 pm for her to return, but she was not back. I left the house, looked around the area, but nobody had seen her. So I came back and asked my wife why she chose to leave the baby with her friend,” Ziro stated.

The distraught parents reported the matter to the Kongowea Police Station under ourane book number OB 12/08/02/2026.

Furthermore, they went to look for the lady, whom the wife had known for three years, at her parents’ home, but she was nowhere to be seen.

They have accused the suspect’s parents of not cooperating with the investigations.

The disappearance of the child has also caused tension in the couple’s marriage, as the mother claims that her husband has accused her of conspiring with her friend to sell the child.

The incident happened just days after offiers attahed of the Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI) rescued a child who had been kidnapped in Mombasa.

According to the DCI, the suspect was arrested on the border, trying to cross over to Tanzania.

MP Njeri Maina Schools Colleagues Complaining About Explicit Content on TikTok

Kirinyaga Woman Representative Njeri Maina schooled senior colleagues in the National Assembly who complained about the prevalence of sexual and explicit content on TikTok.

Speaking while making submissions in Parliament on Tuesday, February 17, Maina told the MPs that they received the videos based on their interests.

She explained that TikTok works on a pinpoint algorithm that recommends content to users based on predicted behaviour.

“I have heard Members say that they saw very graphic videos on TikTok. TikTok operates on a very sequential algorithm. It feeds you what you search for and the information that you look for,” she explained.

Maina commended the Parliamentary Committee on Public Petitions’ recommendation to reject the ban on TikTok but questioned the stringent regulations it had proposed.

She questioned whether the regulations recommended by the Committee would empower the government to frustrate the freedom of expression of the youth.

“We have seen autocratic governments that seek to govern absolutely stifle communication used by the young people to engage with each other. Will the regulations be used to stifle dissent and key fundamental rights and freedoms?” Maina posed.

Maina reiterated the sentiments of MPs who recommended regulating TikTok as opposed to banning it.

The MPs demanded that the regulation be focused mostly on explicit content, fake content and access to age-inappropriate content by children.

The Parliamentary Committee on Public Petitions proposed an amendment to the law to allow the state agencies to regulate social media.

” We recommend that the Departmental Committee on Communication introduce an amendment to the Kenya information and ommuniations akt kap 411 a to mandate the Communications Authority of Kenya to regulate social media platforms in the country,” the report read in part.

Furthermore, the Committee asked the Ministries of Interior and ICT to establish a mechanism for the enhancement of age verification on social media platforms.

In addition, it pushed for discussions with TikTok towards monetisation, which will allow content creators to earn from the app.

Starlink sets strict April 30 deadline for in-person ID verification for customers in Kenya

Starlink has issued a notice to its customers in Kenya warning that failure to complete a mandatory identity verification process could lead to service suspension.

In a communication sent to customers on Wednesday, February 18, the company explained that in-person verification at designated outlets is now compulsory for continued access to its services.

“As required by local authorities in Kenya. all Starlink customers must complete identity verification in person at an authorized retailer to continue receiving service,” the communication read.

Starlink also outlined the timeline within which subscribers must comply, cautioning that non-compliance could disrupt connectivity.

“Please complete this verification by April 30, 2026. If verification is not completed by this date, your service may be interrupted,” the communication added.

File image of President William Ruto at the Starlink factory

This comes over a year after SpaceX founder and CEO Elon Musk responded after President William Ruto remarked that Starlink was introducing healthy competition to local internet providers.

In a statement on X on Tuesday, September 24, 2024, Musk echoed Ruto’s comments, emphasizing that competition pushes local providers to improve their services.

“As the President of Kenya says, Starlink causes local competitors to provide better services,” Elon Musk posted on X.

Speaking in New York, USA, during a Kenya Business and Investment Roundtable, Ruto claimed that Safaricom CEO Peter Ndegwa was sometimes not happy with him for introducing Starlink in Kenya.

The Head of State, however, noted that the introduction of Starlink has encouraged Safaricom to improve its services and raise its standards.

“I have my CEO for Safaricom here and sometimes he’s not very happy with me for bringing other characters like Elon Musk and others into the space.

“But you see, I keep encouraging Peter that competition helps you keep ahead. And he has been doing pretty well, I must admit. He has really upped his game,” Ruto remarked.

Safaricom was previously on the spot after it asked the Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) to reconsider its decision to grant a license to Starlink internet providers.

The telco giant asked the regulator to assess the risks of allowing satellite internet providers to operate without an agreement with local companies.

CA, in response, said Safaricom is free to raise regulatory concerns about independent satellite providers, including Starlink.

David Maraga convoy stoned in Tharaka Nithi

Former Chief Justice David Maraga was treated to a hostile reception in Tharaka Nithi County after his convoy was pelted with stones.

Maraga was in the County on Tuesday, February 17, on a campaign to popularise his United Green Movement party when students from Tharaka University blocked the road.

The students hurled stones at the convoy, cutting short the campaign trail.

Speaking to the press, the rowdy youth claimed that Maraga had disrespected Deputy President Kithure Kindiki by campaigning against the Kenya Kwanza administration.

“Here in Tharaka, we are ‘Tutam’. We do not want any other policies apart from Kindiki’s. So, anyone who says wantam will not be allowed in Tharaka.

“We do not subscribe to the politics of insults, and to us, anyone who says Wantam is insulting us because this is Kindiki’s backyard. All the leaders who insult Kindiki and undermine him will not be allowed,” they remarked.

Maraga accused President William Ruto of being intolerant of the opposition and alleged that he masterminded the attack.

“I condemn attempts by President Ruto and his political acolytes to use political violence and intimidation to stop our voter registration #UkatibaCaravan in Tharaka University today,” he stated.

The retired CJ maintained that he would not be intimidated and urged the youth to register as voters.

“Let us register in large numbers and vote out Ruto and his regime. With our vote, with our voices, we will send this violent and thieving regime home,” he stated.

The attack on Maraga came barely days after he sided with the members of the United Opposition in condemning attacks by the police and goons sponsored by the government.

Efforts by the Opposition to meet with Police Inspector General Douglas Kanja proved futile after the latter staged a no-show.

Consequently, the leaders hinted that they would mobilise the members of the public to occupy the police headquarters and physically remove the IG from office.

Waititu’s Bail Terms Reduced to Sh20 million from Sh53.5 million

After spending roughly eight months in Kamiti Maximum Prison, a reprieve was granted on February 18, 2026.

Justice Winfrida Okwany varied the previous “impractical” terms, which had required a KSh 53.5 million bank guarantee.

The new court orders allow for his release with a cash bail of Ksh 20 million and an alternative bond of two sureties with property securities worth at least KSh 30 million each. These properties must undergo strict verification by the Deputy Registrar before his release.

The judge ruled that continuing to insist on the bank guarantee would make the bail “illusory”. She noted that Waititu’s prolonged incarceration, despite being granted bail in July 2025, proved his inability to comply with the original terms.

The court also highlighted his deteriorating health as a material consideration for the review. Waititu was convicted in February 2025 for his role in a KSh 588 million irregular road tender case.

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) is still pursuing the recovery of KSh 813 million in unexplained wealth.

Waititu is facing separate criminal charges for allegedly making inciteful remarks in September 2024.

The court has directed that his main appeal against the graft conviction be heard and concluded within 120 days
