China in race to become leading global AI hub with self-reliance

Global investments in Artificial Intelligence technologies have risen significantly as investors develop models with improved capabilities.

Since the 2023 release of Generative AI models triggered a new era of AI, venture capital in the sector has increased as the UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD) predicts that the market value will soar to $4.8 trillion by 2033.

As such, developed and developing countries are channelling investments towards meeting demands for AI infrastructure, solutions and digital networks.

China is among the countries targeting AI investments as it aims to be a global leader in the emerging technology.

In October 2025, the country unveiled the ZGC (Jingxi) AI Technology Park to support enterprises, aggregate and develop a full-chain ecosystem for AI development.

Covering nearly 800,000 square meters, the park located at Beijing’s Mentougou district also supports technological enterprises with computing power, data platforms and other ecological support.

He Fen, the Managing Director of the ZGC says the Park would be critical in spurring China’s growth in AI development as it aims for global leadership.

At Jingxi, Chinese enterprises providing solutions in fields such as manufacturing, meteorology, art and design, medicine, finance and energy have set base. The entreprises major in providing robotic solutions, 3D printing, industrial development, research and development and other forms of digitization.

With its eyes on global leadership, Beijing’s AI Park boasts of supporting established AI platforms such as High-Flyer’s DeepSeek and Alibaba’s Qwen, as well as housing startups such as Zhipu AI. The latter, which is owned by Knowledge Atlas Technology, was recently hailed for being the first pure-play independent LLM startup to go public on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange.

According to Ms Fen, the AI Park is keen on the development of local industrial products to support the AI ecosystem.

This and the wider strategy by the Chinese government have seen Huawei – a leading technology company – dominate the country’s semiconductor supply chain. The Chinese telco has stands out in chip manufacturing, meeting growing demands for semiconductors to support China’s quest for self-sufficiency in the AI ecosystem.

Jensen Huang, the CEO of Nvidia, recently told CNBC that the global leader in semiconductors industry has lost its ground in China.

“The demand in China is quite large. Huawei is very, very strong. They had a record year, they’ll likely, very likely, have an extraordinary year coming up, and their local ecosystem of chip companies are doing quite well, because we’ve evacuated that market,” Huang told CNBC.

Huawei’s takeover of the Chinese chip market is also a result of America’s tight restrictions on advanced AI chip exports.

In its five-year social and economic development plan unveiled early in 2026, China set goals to achieve self-reliance in science and technology.

Other than self-sufficiency, Fen also points to China’s push for affordable AI solutions that can be adopted by both the public and private sector.

A 2025 Global AI Adoption Report by the Microsoft AI Economy Institute revealed a rise in adoption of DeepSeek, a Chinese-owned Large Language Model and open-source AI platform. Microsoft’s survey found that DeepSeek had gained significant traction in markets long underserved by traditional providers.

“DeepSeek’s success reflects growing Chinese momentum across Africa, a trend that

may continue to accelerate in 2026,” the report reads in part. It further observed that DeepSeek’s adoption was due to its free-to-use model, which offered an accessibility advantage for populations with limited access to technological progress.

In his 2026 new year address, China’s President Xi Jinping pointed to an AI breakthrough and a stream of innovations.

“Many large AI models have been competing in a race to the top, and breakthroughs have been achieved in the research and development of our own chips,” said President Jinping.

Over 10,000 child protection cases reported as Nairobi leads in missing children reports

By Bonface Mulyungi

The State Department for Children Services has revealed that more than 10,000 child protection cases were recorded across the country between January 2025 and March 2026, with abandonment cases accounting for the highest number.

Principal Secretary for Children Services CPA Carren Ageng’o in a statement said data from the Child Protection Information Management System (CPIMS) recorded 10,581 cases under various child protection categories.

The cases include 6,820 cases of abandonment, 1,952 abductions, 1,636 missing children cases involving lost and found children, and 173 trafficking cases.

“The Department has implemented targeted interventions across all categories, including alternative family care arrangements, rescue operations, family tracing and reunification, reintegration support, and appropriate judicial action depending on case specifics,” said Ageng’o.

According to the PS, Nairobi County recorded the highest number of reported cases, followed by Nakuru, Kakamega, Homa Bay and Kiambu counties.

The department noted that it continues to work with law enforcement agencies, county governments, development partners and community structures to strengthen child protection systems across the country.

Ageng’o said the government has adopted a coordinated multi-sectoral approach to child protection in line with Sections 54 and 55 of the Children Act, 2022, which provide for the establishment of Children Advisory Committees at county and sub-county levels.

“These Committees bring together key actors in the child protection ecosystem to ensure that all child protection concerns are addressed in a structured, timely, and holistic manner,” she stated.

The PS further noted that Kenya was recently ranked number one in Eastern and Southern Africa and West and Central Africa in the Out of the Shadows Index, which assesses government efforts in preventing and responding to sexual violence against children and adolescents.

“This recognition affirms the country’s sustained investment in strengthening child protection systems and safeguarding the wellbeing of children,” she added.

The State Department urged members of the public to report cases involving missing children, abuse, neglect, violence, exploitation, trafficking and online abuse through the National Child Helpline 116, the nearest police station, Sub-County Children’s Offices or local administration offices.

“Timely reporting is critical to enable swift intervention, protection, investigations, family tracing, rescue operations, and access to justice for affected children,” said Ageng’o.

The department reiterated its commitment to strengthening systems aimed at ensuring no child is left unprotected, unaccounted for or unsupported.

Chelsea legend Cesar Azpilicueta retires from professional football

By Bonface Mulyungi

César Azpilicueta, one of the most successful players in Chelsea history, on Friday announced he will retire from football at the end of the season.

Azpilicueta became the first player to win it all during his eleven years at Stamford Bridge, lifting the Premier League, FA Cup, League Cup, UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League, UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup. His 13 major cup final appearances for Chelsea is also a club record.

Azpilicueta featured 508 times for the Blues, the most by a non-English player in our history. He also spent four years as club captain, having been appointed ahead of the 2018-19 campaign.

Azpilicueta, who won 44 caps for Spain, spent two years with Atletico Madrid after leaving the Blues. He played for Sevilla this season.

The 36-year-old penned an open letter on his social media channels confirming his decision. It read: “Dear football, today, I want to share with you that this season will be my last as a professional footballer. After so many years living my dream, I feel it’s time to start a new chapter in my life.

“Being honest, even though I have been preparing myself for this moment, I found it hard to write this letter. After 20 seasons, many people have played an important role in my career.

“When I first kicked a ball as a child in Pamplona with my schoolmates, I never imagined the amazing journey ahead. I’m grateful for every moment: the wins, the tough losses, the challenges, and most of all, the people I’ve met and the friendships I’ve made along the way.”

“To my teammates, coaches, and every staff member at all the clubs I’ve been lucky to be part of, thank you for helping me grow as a person and a player every day. Wearing the shirts of CA Osasuna, Olympique Marseille, Chelsea FC, Atletico de Madrid, Sevilla FC, and representing my country at the biggest stages has been a true privilege. Every moment has meant so much to me.”

UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer Urges TNT to Make Champions League Final Free-to-air

By Bonface Mulyungi

BBC –Sir Keir Starmer has called on TNT Sports to make next Saturday’s Champions League final between Arsenal and Paris St-Germain free-to-air.

The UK prime minister has written the broadcaster to “strongly urge you to reconsider” a decision to make the final available to subscribers only.

Every previous final since the Champions League format was introduced to the European Cup in 1992 has been made available to watch free of charge in the UK.

In a letter to TNT executives, Starmer wrote: “I was saddened to see that, for the first time since the competition started 34 years ago, TNT Sports has decided that [the fixture] will not be free to watch for football supporters here in the UK.”

Last week, it was revealed that fans would need a subscription to watch all three European club finals, to which TNT holds the rights.

Starmer – who is an Arsenal fan – wrote: “The Champions League is the biggest club football competition in the world and rightly means a lot to fans in this country – the home of football.

“I am a firm believer that the final of this competition should remain free to watch, whether Arsenal have made it or not.

“Obviously, I want as many fellow fans as possible to be able to watch our team in this historic final for the first time in 20 years. However, this is bigger than that.

“This is about supporters of all teams coming together in living rooms and pubs in every corner of the country to watch the most elite players in Europe battle it out.

“Hard-working people should not have to worry about forking out for a subscription to watch a game of this magnitude.

“We should be putting supporters first. That is why I have already encouraged Fifa to do more to make tickets more affordable at this summer’s World Cup.

“That is also why I want to strongly urge you to reconsider and make the final next Saturday free to watch for the millions of passionate football fans in this country.”

Fans also needed a TNT subscription to watch Aston Villa win the Europa League final last week, and the same will apply to the Conference League final between Crystal Palace and Rayo Vallecano on Wednesday.

In a statement, TNT Sports said: “It has been a privilege to bring Uefa club competitions to sports fans across the UK throughout the season.

“Having three Premier League clubs reach the finals shows the strength of English football and something that we are proud to continue to support.

“We have made all three Uefa finals this year available from just £4.99, the price for a month-long subscription to HBO Max that also includes the great entertainment on the service. This represents exceptional value for fans to watch the conclusion of the competitions.”

Six years ago, the previous government rejected a House of Lords select committee proposal to add the Champions League final to the list of “crown jewels” events, which would have ensured it would always be free-to-air.

The Champions League final had been free on ITV each year from 1993 – with the exception of the 1994 final, which the BBC showed live – until BT Sport won the rights, starting from 2015-16.

BT Sport continued to make it available without a subscription through to 2023, simultaneously broadcasting the game on its YouTube channel.

This changed after BT Sport was bought by Warner Bros Discovery and rebranded as TNT Sports.

While the finals remained available without cost, fans needed to sign up for a Discovery+ account to get access.

Discovery+ has been replaced by Warner Bros Discovery’s new streaming service, HBO Max, which has no free option.

Fans will not need a full TNT Sports subscription, and can instead sign up for HBO Max for one month.

The cheapest subscription starts at £4.99, though most Sky customers already get HBO Max at no extra cost.

From 2027-28, TNT Sports will lose its European rights.

Paramount+ has picked up the Champions League, while the Europa League and the Conference League will move to Sky Sports.

Highlights of the Champions League final will be available on the BBC Sport website and across social media channels 15 minutes after the trophy lift, and on BBC iPlayer and television later in the evening.

Arsenal, who have never won the Champions League, were confirmed as Premier League champions for the first time since 2004 earlier this week

Kiambu family demands justice after student allegedly dies of suicide inside police cell

By Bonface Mulyungi

A family in Kiambu County is demanding an independent investigation into the death of a young student who allegedly died by suicide while in custody at Kiambu Police Station under circumstances they describe as suspicious and inconsistent.

The deceased, identified by relatives as Brian Njunge Ndungu, was an architecture student at Kiambu National Polytechnic (KINAP) who had recently moved into an apartment in the Kiambu area.

According to the family, he had been arrested over allegations of theft involving household items belonging to a neighbour.

Speaking outside the police station, Brian’s sister, Claire Njambi, narrated the sequence of events that led to the family’s discovery of his body inside a police cell.

Claire said the ordeal began early in the morning when her brother received a phone call from a man who introduced himself as a Criminal Investigations Department (CID) officer, now known as the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI). She claimed the caller questioned her about Brian before ending the call abruptly after an argument.

Later, their mother allegedly received another call informing her that Brian had been apprehended and detained at Kiambu Police Station over claims that he had stolen a MacBook laptop, a gas cylinder, a computer mouse and two umbrellas from a neighbour.

The family immediately travelled to the station and arrived shortly before noon.

Claire alleged that while waiting outside an office at the station, they noticed officers and another man believed to be a caretaker laughing and engaging in what appeared to be casual conversation.

According to the family, the atmosphere changed when two women — one identified as a chaplain and another who introduced herself as a counsellor — entered the office and began speaking to them in what appeared to be grief counselling even before they had been informed about Brian’s condition.

Claire claimed the counsellor spoke generally about suicide cases involving male students before eventually informing them that Brian had died.

The family was then escorted to the holding cells, where they found Brian alone in a cell, hanging against a wall.

Claire claimed they observed blood stains on his clothes, signs of bleeding from his nose and excessive sweating on his body, raising questions about the circumstances surrounding his death.

Brian’s mother, Susan Wambui, broke down as she spoke about the loss of her son, describing him as a quiet young man who had no reason to steal the items police claimed were missing.

Wambui insisted that investigations must be conducted thoroughly and transparently.

“I want justice for my son. We have been given no proper explanation except being told he committed suicide,” she said.

The family further questioned inconsistencies surrounding the alleged complainant and the apartment where the theft reportedly occurred.

According to Claire, the police informed them that the complainant lived on the ground floor while Brian lived on the first floor. However, after visiting the apartment themselves, the family claimed they established that the complainant occupied the first floor while Brian lived on the second floor.

Claire also questioned the identity of the alleged caretaker who first contacted the family, saying some tenants later informed them the apartment rarely had a caretaker.

Brian had reportedly moved into the apartment only three weeks earlier and was preparing to continue his studies after completing part of his architecture course.

His brother, Alan Karanja, accused officers at the station of mistreating Brian while in custody and demanded accountability from authorities.

The emotional family members called on the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) and other investigative agencies to conduct independent investigations into the incident.

By Friday evening, police had not publicly released a detailed account of the events leading to the student’s death. The family said they had already recorded statements and opened an Occurrence Book (OB) report as they pursue justice for their kin.

Sonko suspends NEDP activities over extortion claims, internal wrangles

By Bonface Mulyungi

A fresh storm is brewing in the National Economic Development Party (NEDP) after party leader Mike Sonko suspended all party activities over allegations that some officials were extorting money from aspirants and members seeking opportunities within the party.

In a statement posted on Facebook, Sonko announced the immediate suspension of party registration and operational activities, citing growing concerns about officials allegedly demanding payments from individuals seeking to register or secure party tickets.

“We are suspending all registration and activities of our party as we address rising concerns where some members and officials are illegally asking for money to register people and give aspirants a chance,” Sonko stated.

The former Nairobi Governor specifically accused NEDP Secretary General Ben Mulwa of being linked to complaints raised by aspirants from Kwale County.

According to Sonko, several aspirants contacted him alleging they had been asked to pay money in exchange for an opportunity to contest under the party’s banner.

The dispute also spilled over into the party’s recent activities in Kwale County during the opening of NEDP offices in Ukunda, where Sonko accused senior officials of bypassing established party procedures.

He claimed that Secretary General Ben Mulwa and Executive Director Dan Onsomu announced county leadership positions without consultation or approval from the party leadership.

Sonko maintained that no officials had been formally elected or nominated to leadership positions in Kwale County, saying all appointments would be subjected to what he described as a free, fair and democratic process.

He further declared any positions announced during the event null and void pending official party procedures.

Over 300 Ogiek families decry forceful eviction from Samburet Forest, urge President Ruto to intervene

By Bonface Mulyungi

More than 300 families from the Ogyek community living in Samburet Forest in the Kibulgei area of Kipkelion, Kericho County, are demanding justice following what they describe as a forceful eviction from their ancestral land by individuals they allege are influential politicians from Kericho and Bomet counties.

Speaking to the press on Friday, the affected residents said the eviction operation left hundreds of families homeless and exposed to harsh conditions, with many allegedly losing houses, livestock and other personal belongings.

The residents further claimed that despite writing to the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), the Office of the President and the Ministry of Interior seeking intervention, little action has been taken to address their grievances or facilitate their return to the disputed land.

The families are now appealing to the government to urgently step in and help them reclaim what they describe as their ancestral home, saying they have nowhere else to settle.

“We are the owners of this land; I was born here and have lived in this land since 1950. I was initiated here and worked here until my retirement,” Joel Kilel, a resident in Kibulgei said.

Another resident Joseph Koech added, “Watoto wetu ata hawasomi, tumeteseka sana na hatuna ata kiongozi mmoja amekuja kutusaidia. Rais Ruto na Kericho Senator tusaidieni.”

Omanyala Wins Xiamen Diamond League 100m after clocking 9.94 seconds

By Bonface Mulyungi

Kenya’s sprint star Ferdinand Omanyala continued his impressive run of form after storming to victory in the men’s 100 metres at the Xiamen Diamond League Meeting on Saturday, May 23.

Africa’s fastest man clocked an impressive 9.94 seconds to defeat a star-studded field and secure his fifth consecutive sub-10 performance of the season.

Omanyala edged out South Africa’s Gift Leotlela, who settled for second place in 10.00 seconds, while American sprinter Trayvon Bromell completed the podium in 10.03 seconds.

The highly competitive race featured some of the world’s top sprinters, including American Olympic silver medallist Kenny Bednarek, who narrowly missed out on a podium finish after clocking 10.03 seconds. South Africa’s Akani Simbine finished fifth in 10.04 seconds.

Former world champion Christian Coleman and Botswana’s sprint sensation Letsile Tebogo finished seventh and eighth respectively, posting times of 10.08 and 10.10 seconds.

The victory extends Omanyala’s remarkable outdoor campaign, which has seen the reigning Commonwealth Games champion consistently clock sub-10-second performances.

The 30-year-old began his season indoors, competing in the Meeting de Paris Indoor, Elite Indoor Track Miramas Meeting, and the Russian Winter Games before transitioning to the outdoor circuit.

He opened his outdoor season at the Lefika International Relays in Botswana and later claimed victory at the Cape Milers Continental Tour, winning his first 100m race of the year in 10.19 seconds.

Omanyala then dipped below the 10-second mark for the first time this season at the Addis Ababa Grand Prix, where he won in 9.98 seconds. He followed that performance with victories at the Kip Keino Classic in Nairobi, clocking 9.96 seconds, before recording 9.95 seconds at the Botswana Golden Grand Prix.

Earlier this month, Omanyala represented Kenya at the World Athletics Relays, where the men’s 4x100m relay team missed out on qualification for the 2027 World Championships in Beijing but managed to set a new national record of 38.27 seconds.

His latest triumph also marks redemption after finishing second at the Shanghai Diamond League Meeting, where Leotlela narrowly beat him by one hundredth of a second, clocking 9.97 seconds against Omanyala’s 9.98.

Speaking after the Shanghai race, Omanyala expressed confidence in his form and preparations for the season.

“I ran under 10, and I was satisfied. The result is good, and we move on from there. Before the race, I had an expectation to run under 10, and now that I have achieved that, I hope to keep the performance consistent,” he said.

57 protesters arrested over Machakos fuel hike demos released on Ksh.5,000 bail each

By Bonface Mulyungi

Fifty-seven protesters arrested during Monday and Tuesday’s anti-fuel hike demonstrations in Machakos have been released on cash bail of Ksh.5,000 each, bringing relief to the detainees and their families.

Defense lawyer Jackson Kala had petitioned the court to bar the suspects from taking a plea, citing defective charge sheets.

The court, however, dismissed the application and directed the accused to plead to charges of road encroachment contrary to the Traffic Act and conspiracy to commit a misdemeanour.

Out of the group, 35 pleaded not guilty. The court subsequently reduced their bail terms from Ksh.15,000 to Ksh.5,000.

The suspects appeared before Senior Resident Magistrate Dorcas Endoo, who directed them to return to court on June 3, 2026, and again on July 2, 2026, when they will receive instructions and the hearing of the case will commence.

Defence lawyers noted that at least 200 protesters were arrested in Machakos alone during the two-day matatu strike linked to the demonstrations.

President Ruto commissions Diani Modern Market in Kwale

By Bonface Mulyungi

President William Ruto on Saturday commissioned the Diani Modern Market in Kwale County, a facility expected to improve trading conditions for hundreds of small-scale traders in the region.

The market, which was launched in June 2024 and is now complete, has more than 300 stalls occupied by traders dealing in fresh produce and other goods.

The facility also includes an ICT centre and a breastfeeding and resting area for mothers with young children.

Speaking during the commissioning, Market Chairman Sebastian Musembi said traders had previously operated in an open-air market under difficult conditions, particularly during adverse weather.

“We are grateful for this project. This used to be an open-air market and the conditions were challenging, especially during rainy and hot seasons,” said Musembi.

He added that the market space may soon prove insufficient on busy market days due to the growing number of traders, and called for further engagement with the government on possible expansion plans.

During the event, President Ruto also laid the foundation stone for the Lunga Lunga ESP Market at the Kenya-Tanzania border and the Mkuluni/Ganze ESP Market, projects aimed at boosting trade within the coastal region.

Earlier in his Coast tour, the President launched the Kinango ESP Market in Kwale County and inspected the Kizingitini Fish Market and Hindi Market projects in Lamu County.

Ruto is expected to conclude his regional tour on Monday in Mombasa County, where he will lay the foundation stone for the Makupa Modern Market.

The markets are part of the government’s wider plan to expand trading infrastructure and support small and medium-sized enterprises by improving access to formal trading spaces for farmers and small-scale traders.
