Tanzanian National Arrested Over Murder of 11-Year-Old in Kisauni

By Andrew Kariuki

Police have arrested a Tanzanian national in connection with the murder of 11-year-old Glorious Kaiza Maore, bringing a breakthrough in a case that began with the child’s disappearance in March.

According to investigators, the minor was reported missing on March 15, 2026 after failing to return home from Sunday school practice.

Days later, a disturbing discovery was made in the Manyani area when children playing nearby found a sack with a human hand protruding from it. Police were alerted and upon examination, the body of the minor was recovered, bound in an apparent attempt to conceal the crime.

A postmortem conducted at the Coast General Teaching and Referral Hospital confirmed that the child had been defiled before her death.

Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations launched investigations, leading to the identification of a suspect, Anthony Juma, also known as Kipara.

Police say the suspect had fled after the incident, leaving behind an abandoned house where partially burnt clothes and bedding believed to be linked to the case were recovered.

Following a manhunt, the suspect was arrested on April 12, 2026 in Kisauni.

He was subsequently presented before the Shanzu Law Courts, where investigators sought custodial orders to complete investigations.

On April 13, 2026, the court granted a 21-day custodial order to allow for forensic analysis and further inquiries.

The suspect, described by authorities as a Tanzanian national operating locally as a garbage collector without formal identification, remains in custody as investigations continue.

The case is scheduled for mention on May 4, 2026.

Mudavadi warns youths over rising overseas job scams and trafficking cases

Young Kenyans seeking employment opportunities abroad have been cautioned against using unverified recruitment agents, with authorities warning that many have fallen victim to deception that has exposed them to exploitation, detention, and even armed conflict.

Foreign and Diaspora Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, during the Labour Day celebrations, said overseas work remains a major opportunity for Kenyan youth, but insisted that it must be pursued through approved government systems to guarantee safety and protect workers from criminal networks.

He noted that the government has established structured labour migration pathways, including the Kazi Majuu programme, to ensure Kenyans travel abroad under verified contracts and secure conditions.

“I would like to take this opportunity to ask our youth, when you want to go out in search of employment in various foreign countries, use the Ministry of Labour, National Employment Agency and Diaspora Department. We want you to go and work in a safe environment, in a peaceful environment and earn with your security guaranteed,” he said.

Mudavadi warned that ignoring official procedures has resulted in cases where young people were misled into dangerous environments, including areas experiencing armed conflict, despite having no training for such situations.

“Please use the government institutions so that we can help you to ensure that you go to a safe working environment. We have lost young people in Russia and Myanmar in the so-called golden triangle,” he said.

He said many of those affected were drawn in through fake job promises that offered high salaries and improved living standards, only for them to later find themselves trapped in unsafe and exploitative conditions.

Government data shows that by early April 2026, more than 250 Kenyans are believed to have been recruited into the Russia-Ukraine war, after being lured through misleading job advertisements and promises of foreign citizenship.

Mudavadi disclosed that following diplomatic engagement, he travelled to Moscow where an agreement was reached with Russian authorities to halt further recruitment of Kenyans, while efforts continue to repatriate those still caught up in the conflict.

He added that at least three Kenyans are currently held as prisoners of war in Ukraine, 16 are missing in action, and 38 others are undergoing treatment for injuries in restricted facilities.

The government has also escalated action against illegal recruitment networks, shutting down over 600 agencies suspected of trafficking and misleading job seekers, as repatriation efforts continue for those seeking to return home.

Mudavadi further raised alarm over Kenyans trapped in similar scams in Asia, noting that over 100 were stranded in Myanmar under fake job schemes, with some rescued while others remain detained or in difficult conditions.

Between October 2025 and March 2026, more than 350 Kenyans were rescued from forced labour camps, while others are still believed to be stranded along the Thailand–Myanmar border as operations to recover them continue.

US imposes sanctions on DR Congo ex-President Kabila alleging rebel support

The US has imposed sweeping sanctions on former Democratic Republic of Congo President Joseph Kabila, accusing him of backing the M23 rebel group.

Washington alleges he provided financial support, encouraged defections from the Congolese army and even “sought to launch attacks” on the military from outside the country.

The 54-year-old ex-president, who led DR Congo for 18 years from 2001, has not responded to a BBC request for comment.

The US said these latest sanctions were part of a wider effort to support last year’s peace deal between neighbours DR Congo and Rwanda that it brokered. Washington also says Rwanda supports the M23 and sanctioned some of its army’s leading commanders in March.

Kigali denies backing the rebels, despite overwhelming evidence, and says its military presence in the region is a defensive measure against threats posed by armed groups in DR Congo to Rwanda’s security.

The US Treasury statement announcing the sanctions on Kabila alleged that he was aiming to destabilise Kinshasa and position an opposition candidate to regain political influence.

Under the measures, all of Kabila’s assets in the US have been frozen. American citizens and companies are barred from doing business with him. Banks and foreign partners have been warned against even indirect dealings with the former president, with violations carrying heavy civil or criminal penalties.

The sanctions are designed not only to punish but to force behavioural change, signalling Washington’s willingness to target former leaders accused of fuelling conflict.

Eastern DR Congo has been dogged by conflict for years with myriad armed groups operating in the area. At the beginning of 2025, the M23 made major advances capturing large areas of this mineral-rich region, including its biggest cities.

The US said the sanctions also bolstered a regional economic agreement that “enhances transparency in critical minerals supply chains”.

Last December, the US and DR Congo agreed a partnership to increase access to the region’s vast deposits of minerals such as cobalt, coltan and copper.

The current whereabouts of Kabila are unknown, but 12 months ago he made an appearance in the M23-held city of Goma.

Last September, he was sentenced to death in absentia by a Congolese military court for war crimes and treason in connection with his alleged support of the M23. He denied the charges, but did not appear in court to defend himself saying the case was “arbitrary”.

Nairobi to Integrate Climate Worx Into Daily Clean-Up System

By Andrew Kariuki

Nairobi is set to overhaul its urban sanitation operations following a decision to integrate the Climate Worx programme into the county’s routine clean-up system.

The move, agreed during a high-level planning meeting chaired by Green Nairobi CEC Member Maureen Njeri, brings together national and county agencies in a coordinated effort to streamline waste management and improve environmental enforcement across the city.

Under the new framework, Climate Worx teams will be absorbed into the Nairobi City County Government sanitation structure, with their roles incorporated into daily operations such as street sweeping, drainage clearing, vegetation control, litter collection and general waste handling.

Officials say the shift is designed to eliminate duplication of roles and move away from periodic clean-up campaigns toward a more consistent, citywide system.

The restructuring also introduces tighter supervision at the sub-county level. County Commissioners and Deputy County Commissioners will oversee attendance and chair biweekly coordination meetings to monitor deployment and performance.

While operational control will remain under the county government, the National Youth Service will provide additional field supervision to enhance discipline and coordination.

To boost waste collection efficiency, the county, working with the Nairobi Rivers Commission and NYS, will deploy additional trucks aimed at improving garbage transport and reducing delays.

Authorities are also intensifying action against illegal dumping, with each sub-county set to establish multi-agency enforcement teams comprising national administration officers, police and county enforcement units.

Officials describe the plan as a transition from fragmented efforts to a structured system with clear accountability, expected to improve cleanliness, reduce drainage blockages and enhance waste management.

However, they noted that enforcement alone will not be sufficient, calling for increased public awareness and cooperation from residents.

Nairobi South County Commissioner Simon Osumba urged the adoption of clear performance targets to track progress and strengthen accountability as implementation begins.

Authorities say the success of the programme will depend on sustained inter-agency coordination, consistent enforcement and active public participation.

Japan’s Nishikori to retire at end of 2026 season

Japan’s Kei Nishikori says he “gave it his all” after announcing he will retire from tennis at the end of the 2026 season.

The 36-year-old became the first Japanese player to break into the top 10 and achieved a career-high ranking of number four in the men’s standings.

Nishikori, who won bronze at the 2016 Olympics in Rio, became the first player from his country to reach a Grand Slam singles final when he played Marin Cilic for the US Open title in 2014 – a match he lost in straight sets.

He has now dropped to 464 in the men’s rankings having been hampered by injuries.

“To be honest, I still wish I could continue my playing career,” wrote Nishikori on social media. “Even so, looking back on everything up to this point, I can proudly say that l gave it my all. I am truly happy to have walked this path.

“I will cherish every moment of the remaining matches and fight to the very end.”

Nishikori, who started his professional career in 2007, won 12 ATP Tour titles and has been playing on the Challenger Tour tour this year.

He last competed on the main ATP Tour at the Cincinnati Open in August 2025.

One of Nishikori’s most notable wins was beating 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic in the semi-finals of the 2014 US Open.

“Reaching the ATP Tour, playing at the highest level of competition and maintaining a presence in the top 10 is something I am extremely proud of,” said Nishikori.

“Whether in victory or defeat, the special atmosphere I felt in packed arenas is irreplaceable.

“There were also times when I was overwhelmed by frustration and anxiety due to repeated injuries that prevented me from playing as I wanted.

“Even so, my love for tennis and my belief that I could become a stronger player always brought me back to the court.

“I feel that all of these experiences have enriched and shaped my life. I am deeply grateful [to] my family and to everyone who has supported me at all times.”

Gachagua Attends Thanksgiving Ceremony in Kitengela

By Andrew Kariuki

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua is attending a thanksgiving ceremony in Kitengela hosted by Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) chairman David Ole Parseina.

Gachagua is accompanied by his spouse, Pastor Dorcas Rigathi, and a section of legislators allied to him.

Among those present are James Gakuya, Jane Kihara and Wanjiku Muhia.

The event brings together political leaders and supporters, coming at a time of ongoing realignments within the country’s political landscape.

Dua Lipa declines offer to perform at Fury v Joshua

Pop star Dua Lipa is not expected to perform at the heavyweight bout between Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury later this year.

Britons Joshua, 36, and Fury, 37, have agreed terms for a long-awaited all-British contest targeted for the end of 2026.

However, Saudi Arabia’s General Entertainment Authority chairman Turki Al-Sheikh had suggested the fight could be jeopardised if Dua Lipa did not agree to perform as part of the event’s promotion.

It is unclear whether the remark was made in earnest or in jest, but BBC Sport understands the 30-year-old singer was approached about performing but declined the offer, and is not expected to be involved in the event.

Dua Lipa is one of the world’s most successful pop artists, with global hits including New Rules, Don’t Start Now and Levitating.

A venue for Fury v Joshua has yet to be finalised, although Wembley Stadium in October is understood to be the preferred option for organisers.

Musical acts at high-profile boxing events have become a popular feature in recent years.

Rapper Eminem accompanied Terence Crawford to the ring for his welterweight championship fight against Errol Spence Jr. Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher performed several songs before Daniel Dubois’ win over Anthony Joshua at Wembley in 2024. And last year, 50 Cent performed during Chris Eubank Jr’s ringwalk for his rematch with Conor Benn.

Before any bout with Fury can take place, former unified champion Joshua must first come through his scheduled fight against Kristian Prenga on 25 July in Saudi Arabia.

Fury made his comeback from retirement with a win over Arslanbek Makhmudov last month, but is exploring taking another bout as he waits for Joshua.

Queensberry promoter Frank Warren, who guides Fury, said a loss for Joshua in July would likely scupper a fight with the Gypsy King.

Joshua and Fury have long been linked with a fight, but several attempts to get them in the ring together over the past 10 years failed.

Should the fight go ahead as planned, both men are expected to earn a career-high payday.

Cameroon soldiers kill 14 people: defence ministry

Cameroonian armed forces killed 14 people it called “terrorists” in the country’s volatile northwest, the defence ministry said.

Cameroon’s two anglophone regions have suffered almost a decade of armed violence following attempts to secede from the rest of the mostly French-speaking central African country.

In a statement released Thursday, Cameroon’s defence ministry said its security forces had neutralised 14 people in the town of Ndzerem-Nyam, in the northwest on Sunday.

It said soldiers took an “appropriate and professional response” after “heavily armed terrorists opened heavy fire”.

“Several weapons of war” and “improvised explosive devices” were seized, the ministry added, claiming the casualties were “dangerous terrorists”.

African Conscience, an NGO, condemned in a statement Monday what it called the “brutal killings of at least 14 persons mostly unarmed civilians” after the military interrupted a cultural ceremony.

It refuted the claim that those killed had been armed, said only a few were separatists and called on the government to launch an independent investigation.

On a visit to the region in April, Pope Leo XIV condemned an “endless cycle of destabilisation and death”.

In 2020, soldiers killed at least 21 people, including pregnant women and children, in Ngarbuh, a village in the northwest.

Conflict erupted after President Paul Biya, who has ruled the central African country since 1982, violently put down peaceful demonstrations in 2016 by English speakers who felt marginalised.

Monitors estimate thousands of people have been killed in the subsequent violence between armed separatists and Cameroonian security forces.

Kenya Power Announces Power Outages in Parts of Kisumu County on Saturday

Kenya Power has announced scheduled power interruptions in parts of Kisumu County on Saturday, May 2.

In a notice on Friday, May 1, the company said the planned outage is part of routine maintenance, and will run from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

According to Kenya Power, the outage will affect areas within Kisian.

Locations set to experience the interruption include Ojola Market, Kisian Market, Kisian Railway, Rock, and all adjacent customers.

This comes weeks after Kenya Power issued a notice to customers across the country as it began rolling out a new electricity meter reading system.

In a notice on Tuesday, March 10, Kenya Power said the new technology would modernize how its teams captured meter readings, replacing the traditional manual process.

According to the company, the system worked by scanning the meter display rather than relying on staff to manually input numbers.

“Kenya Power has introduced an Optical Character Recognition (OCR) system for electricity meter reading.

“The OCR system allows our teams to scan meter displays directly, instead of manually typing meter numbers and readings. This improves the accuracy and efficiency of billing, helping ensure customers receive correct bills,” the notice read.

Kenya Power noted that some challenges had emerged during the early stages of the nationwide rollout, particularly when meter readers were unable to access meters located inside locked premises or secured boxes.

“As the system is being rolled out across the country, we have noted that locked premises and meter boxes are the main challenge affecting meter reading,” the notice added.

Because of this, the company asked customers to cooperate with staff when they visited homes or business premises to take meter readings.

“Customers are therefore kindly requested to allow our staff access to meters within their premises, including opening meter boxes where necessary,” the notice continued.

Kenya Power reassured customers about safety and verification procedures when staff visited their premises to take readings.

“For your safety, all Kenya Power staff visiting customer premises will carry official identification cards with their staff number and national ID details. Customers can also verify anyone claiming to be a Kenya Power employee by dialling *977# and selecting the Jua for Sure option,” the notice concluded.

George Ruto Sparks Online Debate After Liking Post Criticising His Dad, The President

By Andrew Kariuki

George Ruto has sparked online debate after his social media activity appeared to endorse criticism directed at his father, President William Ruto.

The reaction followed a post circulating online that criticised the President for relaunching a technical and vocational training project in Kiharu, Murang’a County, which had reportedly already been commissioned earlier.

The post, which attracted widespread attention, questioned the move, suggesting the project had already been completed and operational before the recent event.

George Ruto, through his Instagram account, was seen to have liked the post, a move that quickly drew attention from netizens and fueled online discussion.

The development comes amid growing public scrutiny over claims that some government projects are being relaunched despite having been previously completed.

Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro had also criticised the move, arguing that projects funded through constituency allocations should not be rebranded or relaunched.

Online reactions have since been mixed, with some users expressing frustration over government communication on development projects, while others dismissed the concerns or defended the administration.

The incident has further amplified ongoing conversations around transparency, accountability and public perception in government project implementation.
