Chaos in Nairobi CBD as Police Lob Teargas During Gachagua, Kalonzo Public Rally

Chaos and pandemonium ensued in Nairobi CBD on Monday afternoon after police lobbed teargas at a rally led by Rigathi Gachagua and Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka around the Tea Room area in Nairobi Central Business District.

The incident happened when Kalonzo was introducing members of his party who had attended the rally with him.

Video seen by Uzalendo News Livestream show that immediately after one of the Wiper Party aspirants concluded speaking, the media coverage abruptly went dark for some time before a huge smoke was seen as supporters scattered.

Moments after, Gachagua and the other leaders are whisked away along River Road, with plumes of smoke behind them.

The opposition leaders were at a rally in the CBD after visiting the Inspector General of Police offices over police brutality.

“The police service exists to serve the people of Kenya, not to intimidate them. The law must apply equally to all,” the former Deputy President said.

After the disruptions, the opposition leaders accused the government of orchestrating the chaos.

Gachagua directly blamed Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, alleging that he ordered police officers to disrupt the rally.

The incident follows a similar incident in Kitengela on Sunday, when the ODM faction led by Secretary General Edwin Sifuna and Embakasi East MP Babu Owino held a rally in the area.

The meeting came to an abrupt end after police lobbed teargas, forcing supporters to flee for safety. Following the incident, two people reportedly lost their lives, while over 50 people sustained injuries.

However, Gachagua is not new to police attacks. He has on several occasions faced disruptions at his functions, with the recent incident happening at an ACK church in Othaya.

The recent attacks on the church were one of the reasons the opposition brigade went to see IG Kanja, although he was not at his office at Jogoo House.

The leaders vowed to visit again on Friday, February 20, to seek answers regarding the church attacks, even as police maintain active investigations into the matter, which is ongoing.

Vincent Ayoma: Family of man allegedly killed during ODM’s Kitengela rally narrates ordeal

The family of Vincent Ayoma, a 26-year-old mechanic, is demanding justice following his death during a political rally in Kitengela on Sunday, February 15, 2026.

The rally, organized by the “Linda Mwananchi” faction of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) led by Edwin Sifuna, James Orengo, and Babu Owino, was violently disrupted by police.

According to his family, Vincent was shot while attending the rally at Kitengela town. Witnesses reported that police used live ammunition to disperse the crowd after tear gas failed to clear the area.

His father, speaking to the media, described Vincent as a hardworking young man and the sole provider for his young family. He expressed shock that a peaceful political gathering could turn fatal.

The family has vowed to delay Vincent’s burial until the police officers responsible for the shooting are identified and arrested. They have accused the police of using excessive force against unarmed civilians.

The rally was part of an internal power struggle within ODM, with the Sifuna-led faction defying an attempted ouster by other party members.

Chaos erupted when anti-riot police lobbed tear gas and reportedly fired live rounds to disperse the thousands of supporters gathered in Kitengela.Reports indicate that the rally’s dais and sound system were destroyed during the police operation.

While ODM leaders blamed state agents for the disruption, some reports suggested that the situation escalated after some individuals in the crowd allegedly attempted to raid the Kitengela Police Station and local businesses.

As of February 16, 2026, tension remains high in Kitengela as residents and human rights groups call for an independent investigation into the conduct of the police during the operation.

One person confirmed dead after attack on Sifuna-led rally in Kitengela

Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has announced that one person has been confirmed dead following the attack on a political rally he was leading in Kitengela, Kajiado county on Sunday, February 15, 2026.

In a statement on Monday, Sifuna noted that 28-year-old Vincent Ayomo was fatally shot by police officers who disrupted the rally, accusing President William Ruto’s administration of being behind the violent attack.

“He tragically lost his life in the fight for a better Kenya at the hands of those who are duty-bound to protect him. He came to join other Kenyans in a peaceful assembly. He committed no crime. He provoked nobody. So why did the police kill him?” he posed.

Sifuna faulted President Ruto and Interior Cabinet Secretary (CS) Kipchumba Murkomen for the violence, condemning the use of police and hiring of goons to disrupt public meetings.

He intimated that many more attendees were injured and property was vandalized as teargas was lobbed to disperse the mammoth crowd.

“They do not respect the rights of Kenyans and are intolerant of democratic competition. They have chosen to unleash state violence on Kenyans instead of addressing the many challenges facing them,” he said.

“They wrongly believe that the use of state violence will deter Kenyans from exercising their political rights. To the contrary, Kenyans will not surrender and live on their knees. Instead, they will defend their rights and use their votes to effect change through the ballot.”

The firebrand further vowed to pursue legal action and bring those involved to book, and give justice to the mourning family.

“We will pursue justice for his family and ensure that those responsible for his death are held accountable. We wish the injured quick relief and speedy recovery,” he said.

Sifuna was leading an Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) rival faction attended by political juggernauts Babu Owino, James Orengo, Godfrey Osotsi among others.

ODM was divided when the Oburu Odinga-led faction ousted Sifuna as its Secretary General, but Sifuna maintained he is the duly elected SG and the demotion is a witch hunt for not supporting President Ruto’s re-election ambitions.

Youth Council and NCIC Sign Strategic Partnership to Prevent Electoral Violence

The National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) and the National Youth Council (NYC) have sealed a strategic partnership aimed at curbing election violence and fostering peace among young people ahead of the 2027 General Elections.

The collaboration focuses on empowering youth to be agents of peace rather than “foot soldiers” for political confrontation.

Encouraging youth to use digital platforms for constructive engagement, employment, and income generation rather than spreading hate speech or misinformation.

A series of initiatives designed to strengthen social cohesion, address community challenges, and build resilience against online and offline conflict.

The NCIC has launched a nationwide effort to monitor online media to control incitement and radical beliefs during the election cycle.Joint efforts to identify and counter narratives that fuel division, specifically targeting the youth as they are the most active users of social media.

The pact is part of a broader roadmap by the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) to eliminate the culture of violence that has historically marred Kenyan elections.

Officials have warned that youth are often manipulated through history, emotion, and grievances to incite chaos. The agencies emphasized that election violence damages Kenya’s image, discourages investment, and directly increases youth unemployment by destroying livelihoods.

Alongside these youth-centric pacts, the NCIC is also introducing a “wall of shame” to name and shame politicians who defy national values and codes of conduct.

Turkish Airlines Kenya workers threaten strike as aviation chaos deepens at JKIA

The Transport Workers Union – Kenya (TAWU) has issued a 21-day strike notice to Turkish Airlines on February 16, 2026, citing a stalled Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).

This action coincides with broader industrial unrest at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), where workers from the Kenya Aviation Workers Union (KAWU) officially commenced a strike today despite a court order attempting to block it.

Major flight disruptions are occurring, with both arrivals and departures delayed.Kenya Airways has advised travellers not to proceed to the airport without confirmed flight status updates.

KAWU members are striking against the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) over long-stalled pay reviews (some for over 11 years), failure to finalize a CBA, and the use of temporary contracts for long-term roles.

Although the Employment and Labour Relations Court issued an interim order to halt the strike until February 26, union leaders proceeded with the action starting at 06:00 local time.

The Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) and KCAA have activated contingency measures to maintain essential safety protocols, though they acknowledge significant service stability issues.

“William Ruto Pays KSh 100k for State House PG Meetings” – MP Kaguchia Alleges

Mukurweini Member of Parliament (MP) John Kaguchia has alleged that politicians are always awarded Ksh.100,000 whenever they attend Parliamentary Group meetings in State House.

According to the legislator, politicians have warmed up to the House on the Hill to rake in more funds for personal advancement, accusing the Executive of influencing the political leadership through unjustified tokenism.

“Political leadership has been captured by the executive, and most of them are now looking at how much money they are getting as individuals. Once you see a political leader going to State House, they get alot of benefits,” Kaguchia told one of the TV station on Monday.

“Every meeting you attend in State House, you are paid. When you go for a PG you get Ksh.100,000. The first time I didn’t take the money but sooner than later I stopped going there.”

He further claimed that the political leaders are only interested in forging alliances ahead of the 2027 elections, at the expense of neglecting citizens in dire need of a working service delivery system.

Since becoming the ruling party after the 2022 elections, the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) has held a series of PG meetings.

In 2023, some of the meetings were held on April 11, May 23 and November 7.

In February 2024, a joint retreat and meeting that brought together President William Ruto’s cabinet and the parliamentary group (Senators and MPs) in Naivasha.

Another one was held on June 18, after deadly anti-government protests on June 25, where “significant” changes were made to the much-contested Finance Bill 2024, highlighting the demands of Kenyans and other stakeholders.

In August 2025, the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) had a joint PG meeting with UDA at State House to review progress made in implementing the 10-point Agenda and the recommendations of the National Dialogue Committee (NADCO) report signed in March 2025 between President Ruto and ODM’s founder, the late Raila Odinga.

It was during that meeting that the bipartisan implementation committee was unveiled and mandated to oversee the execution of a 10-point agenda outlined in the NADCO report.

President Ruto has revealed that he will convene another joint UDA-ODM PG meeting to serve as a follow-up to the August 18 inaugural joint session.

According to documents published by the National Assembly, UDA has the majority members in the 13th Parliament with 29 Senators and 145 MPs as of May 22 2023. ODM has 86 MPs and 19 Senators.

These numbers include nominated members.

Kenya Airways announces flight disruptions at JKIA amid aviation workers’ strike

Kenya’s national carrier, Kenya Airways, has announced major flight disruptions at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), affected by the ongoing strike by the Kenya Aviation Workers Union (KAWU).

In a statement on Monday, the carrier noted that the industrial action has affected some departures and arrivals, advising passengers to expect schedule adjustments and delays.

“We sincerely regret the inconvenience and are working closely with the relevant aviation authorities and airport stakeholders to minimize disruption and maintain safe operations,” the statement read in part.

Likewise, passengers have been advised to check their flight status before travelling to the airport, monitor official Kenya Airways communication channels for updates or explore rebooking options/

Meanwhile, the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) has noted that it has activated its operational continuity measures ahead of the planned industrial action.

KCAA maintained that critical aviation safety and air navigation functions will remain operational and are being managed in accordance with established contingency protocols.

“The Authority continues to engage relevant stakeholders in line with applicable labour laws and court directions. We reiterate our respect for due process and remain open to constructive dialogue,” KCAA noted.

KAWU threatened to down their tools, citing reluctance in resolving their labour issues, among them a lack of salary reviews for workers who have served for more than 11 years.

The union is pushing for critical reforms, including the proper execution of Collective Bargaining Agreements (CBA) and the inclusion of contract staff in pensionable employment terms.
