14 Year Old Girl Dies in Narok South Following Alleged Punishment at Home

By Andrew Kariuki

Residents of Emitik village in Sogoo Ward, Narok South Constituency, are mourning the death of a 14 year old girl following allegations that she sustained fatal injuries during punishment at home.

The deceased, identified as Peris Chepng’eno, was a Grade Seven pupil at Kijapa Primary School.

According to witnesses, including the area chief and a relative, the teenager was allegedly beaten by her mother and sister over what were described as household related mistakes.

During the incident, she reportedly collapsed and lost consciousness.

Police have since arrested the two suspects, who are being detained at Ololulung’a Police Station as investigations continue.

Authorities say they are expected to be arraigned in court.

The girl’s body has been moved to Longisa Hospital Mortuary in Bomet County, where a post-mortem examination will be conducted to establish the exact cause of death.

Local leaders have called for calm and urged residents to allow investigations to proceed.

They have also emphasized the importance of adopting non-violent approaches to disciplining children.

The incident has sparked renewed concern over cases of excessive punishment and the need for greater awareness around child protection within the community.

Investigations are ongoing.

Democracy Is Not Chaos – Oburu Oginga Slams Edwin Sifuna for Opposing Official ODM Party Positions

ODM Party Leader Oburu Odinga has told dissenters within the party that they are in the minority and, despite having a say, the majority will always have their way.

Speaking on Wednesday, February 11, Oburu explained that ODM worked under democratic principles, which always favour the majority.

He called out some party leaders who publicly contradicted the party despite being members of the National Executive Council (NEC).

The Siaya Senator maintained that while it is okay to have contrary opinions, the NEC makes the final decision, which becomes the position of the party.

“If you have anything that you disagree with, NEC is a forum to raise those issues and let the members decide. Once the members have decided and you fall into the minority, the minority will have their right to say, and the majority will have their way,” he stated.

Oburu warned leaders hiding behind ‘personal opinions’ while making statements contradictory to the Council to stop undermining the party.

“Democracy does not mean chaos. ODM is like a club, and when you join one, you have to obey the rules of the club,” he reiterated.

The Party Leader maintained that ODM was keen on re-establishing itself as a strong political outfit ahead of the 2027 election.

He made it clear that while ODM has an existing pact with UDA under the Broad-based government, it was not automatic that the agreement would result in an election coalition.

“We are not in a hurry to say ‘Wantam’ or ‘Tutam’. We are strengthening our party to prep ourselves for negotiations.

“First, we will start with our current partners, and if we do not agree, we move on to discuss with other formations that are there, and if there are no agreements, we will go forward alone as ODM,” Oburu disclosed.

Oburu called out the alleged interference of the ODM party politics by Azimio following the announcement of changes in the coalition party leadership.

He declared that Azimio was dead and that the Orange Party had already left the outfit and was working on making its exit formal.

Frank sacked by Spurs after eight months in charge

Thomas Frank has been sacked by Tottenham after just under eight months in charge following their dismal 2-1 defeat at home against Newscastle on Tuesday.

Spurs are 16th in the Premier League and just five points above the relegation zone after a dreadful run of form.

The north London side are winless in their past eight Premier League games – their longest run without a victory since October 2008.

They have won just two of their past 17 league matches and picked up only 12 points in that time.

Tottenham said they had been “determined to give Frank the time and support needed to build for the future together”, but recent results meant “a change at this point is necessary”.

Frank took over as head coach in June after Ange Postecoglou was sacked and signed a deal until 2028,but proved unable to notably improve the club’s league form despite strong results in European competition.

Against a mixed Premier League record of seven wins, eight draws and 11 defeats this season, the Dane led Spurs to automatic qualification for the last 16 of the Champions League by finishing fourth in the group stage.

However, they are out of both domestic cup competitions, having been beaten by Newcastle in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup in October and Aston Villa in the FA Cup third round last month.

“Throughout his time at the club, Thomas has conducted himself with unwavering commitment, giving everything in his efforts to move the club forward,” Tottenham said.

“We would like to thank him for his contribution and wish him every success in the future.”

World Bank Flags Statement Purporting It Reaffirmed Partnership With Kenyan Govt on NYOTA

The World Bank has dismissed a statement circulating online purporting to reaffirm the bank’s parentship with the government on the National Youth Opportunities Towards Advancement (NYOTA) programme.

In an update on Wednesday, February 11, the World Bank flagged the statement as fake.

The global financial institution explained that no such statement has been issued.

“The World Bank Kenya wishes to clarify that the news release currently circulating regarding an alleged response to concerns about the NYOTA program is fake. No statement of that nature has been issued by the World Bank Kenya,” read the statement in part.

NYOTA has also dismissed the statement, saying it did not originate from the World Bank.

NYOTA urged members of the public to disregard the fake statement, which is circulating widely on social media

“This document is fake and should be disregarded. The World Bank has not issued any official communication or statement in relation to this matter,” NYOTA stated.

The clarification comes after former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua hit out at President William Ruto for politicizing the NYOTA project.

“The NYOTA program is a World Bank program happening in other African countries like Angola, Mozambique, Nigeria, Senegal, Benin, Togo, yet we have not seen their presidents turn this into re-election campaign rallies across their countries,” said Gachagua.

The NYOTA project is an initiative aimed at addressing youth unemployment and promoting sustainable economic empowerment.

The project was approved by the World Bank Board on June 15, 2023, and formally assented to as a loan to the Republic of Kenya, with a total project cost of USD 200 million and a commitment amount of USD 229 million.

It became effective on June 21, 2024, and is scheduled to run until December 31, 2028.

NYOTA targets 820,000 vulnerable youth across all 47 counties, offering them a chance to gain employability skills, business support, and access to financial services.

The project is implemented by the Micro and Small Enterprise Authority, Ministry of Youth Affairs, The Arts and Sports (MYAAS), National Social Security Fund.

Senators Edwin Sifuna, Godfrey Osotsi skip ODM NEC meeting amid leadership speculation

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held in Mombasa on Tuesday morning proceeded without two of the party’s top officials — Secretary General Edwin Sifuna and Deputy Party Leader Godfrey Osotsi.

According to a member of the NEC, Sifuna sent his apologies for not attending the meeting but did not provide further details. Osotsi, who also missed the session, cited parliamentary duties as the reason for his absence.

“I did not travel to Mombasa as I am currently in Nairobi attending to my Senate responsibilities,” said Osotsi, who serves as the Senator for Vihiga County.

Party insiders suggested that Sifuna’s absence may be linked to growing tensions within ODM, amid reports that some supporters had been mobilised around the meeting.

The gathering comes at a time when internal discussions have reportedly intensified over possible leadership changes, including speculation about the potential appointment of Busia Governor Paul Otuoma to a senior party role.

Sources within the party indicated that some members have called for the NEC to deliberate on Sifuna’s position, while others have warned that such a move could damage ODM’s public image and unity.

ODM National Treasurer Timothy Bosire downplayed the reported divisions, describing them as part of the party’s democratic culture. “We have always agreed to disagree honourably. This is part of our internal democracy,” Bosire said ahead of the meeting.

During the closed-door session, officials were reportedly presented with various scenarios and the potential implications of any decision to alter the party’s leadership structure. Members were reminded of the need to adhere strictly to the ODM constitution in handling internal disputes.

The NEC meeting, which brought together senior party officials and regional representatives, was expected to address key organisational matters and chart ODM’s political strategy ahead of upcoming national engagements.

Caleb Amisi Ousted as ODM’s National Executive Committee Member

Saboti Member of Parliament Caleb Amisi has been removed from the ODM Party’s National Executive Committee (NEC).

Speaking on Wednesday, February 11, Amisi confirmed that he has received a letter from NEC notifying him of his removal from the committee.

“What people are not aware of is that they have already kicked me out. I have a letter here sent from the NEC,” said Amisi.

The Saboti MP said he has been kicked out of the ODM NEC for illegally holding two party positions.

“The reason they say they are removing me is that I hold two positions. They claim that I am a county chair and at the same time I am the deputy organizing secretary,” he said.

The ODM lawmaker went on to claim that his removal from the ODM NEC was not procedural.

Amisi said the committee should have met and reached a unanimous decision to remove him as a member, adding that he should have been given a right of reply.

“For you to remove a NEC member, there are procedures; you don’t just write a letter and send it on WhatsApp.

“The NEC must meet and unanimously agree that you are supposed to leave. You must be given a right of reply; there must be a hearing,” Amisi added.

Further, he said he was asked by the late Raila Odinga to take up the position of ODM Deputy Organizing Secretary.

Amisi argued that if holding more than one party position was unlawful, then it is the ODM party itself that committed the wrongdoing

“If they thought that holding two positions is illegal, then they are the ones who committed an illegality, not Caleb Amisi, because they are the ones who gave me that position,” the Saboti MP remarked.

Meanwhile, the ODM Party is holding a NEC meeting on Wednesday to deliberate on the wrangles within the party.

In an itinerary shared on Tuesday, February 10, the party said the NEC meeting will be followed by a session with delegates from the Coast region.

The ODM party is experiencing a deepening internal rift between two competing factions: Linda Ground and Linda Wananchi.

At the heart of the unfolding dispute are questions of leadership direction, party funding, and ODM’s positioning in the national political landscape following the death of Raila.

The split became most visible when Sifuna publicly criticised aspects of party operations, including the selection of Oburu Oginga as Party Leader.

Oburu hit back at Sifuna, terming his criticisms as confusing personal opinion with official party policy.

Ghana declares Wednesday ‘Fugu Day’ to promote traditional outfit after online mockery

Ghana has designated every Wednesday as a day to wear the country’s traditional outfit, the fugu, days after it sparked an online debate with Zambians.

The garment gained prominence last week when President John Dramani Mahama wore it during a state visit to Zambia, where some mockingly called it a “blouse,” prompting a fierce response from Ghanaians online.

Ghana’s Minister for Tourism Abla Dzifa Gomashie said on Tuesday that wearing the outfit every week would help project the country’s identity “with pride on the global stage”.

She encouraged wearing the outfit “in all its diverse forms, designs, and expressions, complemented by its distinctive and beautiful accessories”.

The fugu, also known as batakari, is a traditional northern Ghanaian top made from hand‑woven, narrow strips of thick cotton fabric stitched together to form a structured, poncho‑style garment.

Beyond its cultural importance, Gomashie said the outfit’s weekly display would “generate far-reaching social and economic benefits” especially for local weavers, designers, artisans and traders.

“The government hopes that this collective embrace of Fugu will strengthen national unity, stimulate the creative economy, and serve as a powerful symbol of Ghana’s cultural confidence and self-expression,” the minister added.

The iconic outfit has been trending on social media for days following the banter between Ghanaians and Zambians.

The debate prompted Ghanaians, including MPs, to flood social media proudly showcasing their fugus, while Zambians featured wearing their traditional outfits known as siziba.

The online exchange attracted the attention of Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema, who announced that his country would order fugus from Ghana.

President Mahama also suggested exporting the smock in bulk to Zambia.

While emphasizing the fugu’s cultural and political significance, Mahama noted that Ghana’s founding father and Pan-Africanist Kwame Nkrumah wore it on Independence Day in 1957, and that he himself had recently worn it proudly to the UN.

Tottenham sack Thomas Frank after just eight months in charge as relegation looms

Thomas Frank has been sacked by Tottenham after just under eight months in charge following a dismal 2-1 defeat at home to Newcastle on Tuesday.

Spurs are 16th in the Premier League and just five points above the relegation zone after a dreadful run of form.

The North London side are winless in their past eight Premier League games – their longest run without a victory since October 2008.

They have won just two of their past 17 league matches and picked up only 12 points in that time.

Frank took over as head coach in June after Ange Postecoglou was sacked and signed a deal until 2028, but proved unable to notably improve the club’s league form despite strong results in European competition.

Spurs were loudly booed after defeat at home by fellow strugglers Newcastle and West Ham in the past few weeks.

Frank was also taunted by his own fans with chants of “you’re getting sacked in the morning” during the loss to West Ham and the 2-2 draw at Burnley that followed.

After being booed off at half-time while 2-0 down to Manchester City, Frank’s side responded to draw 2-2 at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Captain Cristian Romero was critical of Tottenham‘s board after that result, calling it “disgraceful” that the club only had 11 fit senior players available against City.

The Argentine then received a straight red card – his second of the season – against Manchester United on 7 February, who went on to win 2-0.

Spurs won five, drew two and lost just one of their eight Champions League group stage matches – that defeat coming away to holders Paris St-Germain.

However, their Premier League form has been largely poor since November, including a damaging 4-1 defeat by north London rivals Arsenal and a woeful 3-0 loss at relegation-threatened Nottingham Forest.

Last month Frank said he felt trusted by the board but BBC Sport understands he was already under significant internal scrutiny and at least one member of the club’s executive had raised the option of ending his reign.

Tottenham took just 10 points at home in the league under Frank, but had a better away record, claiming 19 points from 13 matches on the road.

Prior to joining Tottenham, Frank spent seven years in charge of the Brentford, guiding the Bees from the Championship to the Premier League in 2021.

The 52-year-old’s tenure at Spurs started with a Uefa Super Cup defeat on penalties to PSG, with Spurs having booked their place in the match courtesy of winning the Europa League under Australian Postecoglou last season.

Tottenham beat BurnleyManchester City and West Ham in their opening four league games, while also beating Villarreal in the Champions League. But they could not build on that start and Frank’s style of play never won over fans.

He was however hampered by extensive injury issues this season.

They have several players absent through long-term injuries, including Lucas Bergvall, Ben Davies, Richarlison, Rodrigo Bentancur, Mohammed Kudus, Dejan Kulusevski and James Maddison.

Spurs are also without suspended captain Romero for the next three Premier League matches, including the north London derby against Arsenal on 22 February.

Gachagua Announces Date He’ll Tour President Ruto’s Backyard for Campaign

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has announced he will visit President William Ruto’s South Rift backyard this month.

Speaking during an interview on Tuesday, February 10, Gachagua said he would make stops in Mulot and Bomet towns on February 23, 2026, to greet residents.

The DCP party leader noted that his itinerary will begin in Narok Town, where he will thank the locals for electing Douglas Masikonde as the MCA during the November 2025 by-elections.

Gachagua will then head to Mulot before proceeding to Bomet town, both in Bomet County, which is considered President Ruto’s political stronghold.

“The Kipsigis people have really been wanting to see me. I will make stops in Mulot and Bomet to greet the Kipsigis, whom I love very much and who voted for me as Deputy President,” said Gachagua.

The former DP said he has not gotten a chance to thank the Kalejin community following the 2022 general election.

Gachagua also stated that he has no issues with the community, but rather with President Ruto following his impeachment.

“I haven’t had the opportunity to come and tell them thank you. They did not remove me from office; William Ruto did. I have no problem with the Kalenjin people.

“I defended them strongly, even on issues of shares; they are the ones I was defending because they voted for the government. They have also told me they are suffering just like other Kenyans,” Gachagua added.

Further, the DCP leader said he will head to Kisii, where he will hold engagements in the area alongside former CS Fred Matiang’i for three days.

This will be the first time Gachagua will be visiting President Ruto’s backyard since his impeachment in October 2024.

The former Deputy President has largely been touring the Mt Kenya region to consolidate his support base ahead of the 2027 general election.

On Sunday, February 8, Gachagua visited Nyandarua and Nakuru counties and held rallies to drum up support for his DCP party.

He was accompanied by Justin Muturi, Nyandarua Senator John Methu, Kimabu Senator Karungo Thang’wa, Murang’a Senator Joe Nyutu, Naivasha MP Jayne Kihara, Manyatta MP Gitonga Mukunji, and Starehe MP Amos Mwago.
