‘Nothing is eternal’: Guardiola to end decade-long Man City reign at end of season

(Reuters) – Pep Guardiola will leave Manchester City at the end of the season after a decade in charge, the club announced on Friday, bringing an end to one of the most successful eras in English soccer and one of the most influential managerial reigns of all time.

The departure of the 55-year-old Catalan coach will close the ‌book on a remarkable chapter that has seen City transform into a footballing juggernaut.

Guardiola, who took charge of City in 2016, has won six Premier League titles — including four in a row — three FA Cups, five League Cups and the Champions League, but his side have not won the league in two years.

“Don’t ask me the reasons I’m leaving. There is no reason, but deep inside, I know it’s my time,” Guardiola said in a statement.

“Nothing is eternal, if it was, I would be here. Eternal will be the feeling, the people, the memories, the love I have for my Manchester City.

“We worked. We suffered. We fought. And we did things our own way. Our way.”

Although City sealed the domestic cup double this season, Guardiola saw his dreams ‌of a seventh Premier League crown dashed when they drew 1-1 at Bournemouth on Tuesday to hand Arsenal the title, with City set to finish second.

His final game in charge is Sunday’s home fixture against Aston Villa before he takes on the role of Global Ambassador in the City Football Group, giving technical advice to clubs in the group.

City also announced the expanded North Stand at the Etihad Stadium will be named the Pep Guardiola Stand while a statue that ‌will feature on the approach to the stand will be commissioned.

RECORD-BREAKING CAMPAIGNS

Guardiola had arrived in Manchester with a resume already stuffed with silverware from Barcelona and Bayern Munich, taking over from Manuel Pellegrini in July 2016.

After inheriting a successful club financed by the Abu Dhabi United Group, Guardiola will walk away having built a footballing empire after overseeing a paradigm shift in Premier League tactics.

As Guardiola faced the challenge of adapting to England’s famously fast-paced and physical league, possession became an art form and a defensive tool at City as his teams craved complete control.

The result was not just utter dominance — evidenced by record-breaking campaigns like the 100-point 2017-18 season with 106 goals scored — but also relentless consistency year after year, including a record four league titles in a row.

Guardiola’s squads set new standards, forcing other teams to evolve, while City’s financial muscle combined with shrewd signings such as the much sought-after striker Erling Haaland helped deliver the treble in 2022-23.

However, the spectre of the 115 charges of alleged breaches of the Premier League’s financial rules looms large over his tenure at the club.

GUARDIOLA RAISED THE BAR

His rivalry with former Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp raised the bar in the Premier League so high that even 97 points proved insufficient for the Anfield side to claim the title in 2018-19.

More recently, Guardiola has faced a challenge from his protege and former coaching assistant Mikel Arteta, who took charge at Arsenal and finished second behind City twice before ultimately winning the trophy this season.

But Guardiola looked back fondly at his time in Manchester, remembering how the city came together after the Manchester Arena attack while also describing how the club helped him through a tough period when he lost his mother to COVID.

“The fans, the staff, the people of Manchester, you gave me strength when I needed it most,” he added.

“Players don’t forget – every single instant, moment, me, my staff, this club, everything. What we have done, we have done it ‌for all of you. And you have been just exceptional. You don’t know it yet, but you are leaving a legacy.

“Ladies and gentlemen, thank you for trusting me. Thank you for pushing me. Thank you for loving me… Tony Walsh said in his unforgettable poem, ‘This is the place’. I’m sorry, Tony: this is my place.”

DP Kindiki Breaks Silence on His Absence During Fuel Crisis Management Meeting

Deputy President Kithure Kindiki on Friday, May 22, rubbished newspaper reports that he was just a Deputy President by name following his absence from the fuel crisis management meeting.

Kindiki claimed the reports were meant to incite division in government by alleging that he was left out of a very important meeting, which he should have been part of in the absence of President William Ruto.

He explained that leadership was not about being seen in the public eye and confirmed that he was the one who even set up the meeting between the public transport sector stakeholders and the government.

“I saw them writing nonsence, questioning where I was because there was an important meeting involving the Cabinet Secretaries, yet I was missing.

“Murkomen, they don’t know that I was the one who sent you to have that meeting. The President told me to look for the Cabinet Secretaries and give them instructions,” Kindiki added.

Kenya’s Number Two intimated that he and President Ruto had a meeting with the CSs before they met the public transport stakeholders.

He clarified that he did not have any bad blood with the newspapers, but with unnamed individuals who pushed the narrative to the media.

His sentiments were corroborated by Interior CS Kipchumba Murkomen, who argued that most people misunderstood Kindiki’s style of working: a reserved yet result-oriented approach.

“I know you called me, CS Chirchir and CS Wandayi for a meeting in the morning, and you asked me to chair the meeting with the stakeholders. I did so and even announced the results,” Murkomen chipped in.

He called out people trying to insinuate division between Kindiki and his boss. The Interior Boss stated that the former was the best candidate for Ruto’s running mate in 2027.

Murkomen lauded Kindiki for his good working relationship with the Head of State and commended him for not being a tribal leader.

Kindiki’s rebuttal came after former DP Rigathi Gachagua claimed that in Ruto’s absence, the government was run by other individuals and not Kindiki, as provided by the Constitution.

He claimed that the Commander in Chief was not serious about the country by allegedly leaving the country in the hands of  Dennis Itumbi, the Head of Presidential Special Projects and Creative Economy Coordination, whom he referred to as a blogger.

Kenyan stars set for another explosive evening at Xiamen Diamond League

By Bonface Mulyungi

The 2026 Wanda Diamond League caravan rolls into the south-eastern coast of China on Saturday evening, at the Xiamen Egret Stadium.

Barely a week after a thrilling season opener in Shanghai delivered world leads, photo finishes and a series of statement performances, all eyes now shift to Xiamen for what promises to be another explosive evening of world-class athletics.

When the women’s 3000m steeplechase athletes line up at 2:15pm EAT, memories of last weekend’s breathtaking finish in Shanghai will still be fresh.

Olympic champion Peruth Chemutai from Uganda edged reigning world champion Faith Cherotich by the slimmest of margins, winning in a world-leading 8:51.47 just 0.01 seconds ahead of the Kenyan teenager in one of the tightest finishes of the season so far.

The rivalry now takes another dimension in Xiamen with Kenyan-born Bahraini Olympic champion Winfred Yavi making her season debut.

The field is further strengthened by Tunisia’s Marwa Bouzayani and Ethiopia’s Kena Tufa, both of whom dipped under the nine-minute barrier in Shanghai.

With the pace expected to be aggressive once again, Kenya’s meeting record holder Beatrice Chepkoech could see her 2024 mark of 8:55.40 under serious threat.

Cheruiyot chasing new chapter over 5000m

The 2019 world 1500m champion returns to action in the men’s 5000m at 2:52pm EAT, continuing what is increasingly looking like a fascinating reinvention phase in his decorated career.

Now entering his 12th season on the global circuit, the Kenyan veteran appears determined to prove he still belongs among the world’s elite.

Cheruiyot first flirted with longer distances in 2023 when he clocked 7:36 over 3000m in Doha, But a few years later, his return to the distance has given reason to believe he might have a fair shot at a second act in his career. In what was the deepest 3000m ever (14 guys under 7:30), Cheruiyot finished fourth in a significant PB of 7:27.24.

Germany’s surprise Shanghai winner Mohamed Abdilaahi steps up to the 5000m after smashing the German record with 7:25.77 last weekend.

He will face a stacked field that includes Sweden’s world 10,000m bronze medallist Andreas Almgren, one of six athletes in the field boasting a personal best faster than 12:50.

Kenya’s dependable Diamond League regulars Mathew Kipchumba, Edwin Kurgat, Cornelius Kemboi and Boas Kiprugut will also be in the mix as Kenya seeks a strong showing in the distance event.

Ewoi hunting redemption in women’s 1500m

World 1500m silver medallist Dorcus Ewoi heads into Xiamen under pressure to rediscover her sharpness after being a nearly girl at the start to her 2026 campaign.

The Kenyan opened her Diamond League season in Shanghai with a fifth-place finish in 3:57.74, narrowly missing the podium in a fiercely competitive field.

Ethiopia’s Birke Haylom won the race in 3:55.56 ahead of compatriot Tsige Duguma, while Australia’s Abbey Caldwell completed the podium.

In Xiamen, the field will feature world bronze medallist Jessica Hull alongside fellow Australian Linden Hall in another loaded women’s 1500m contest.

Suspected Ebola virus case reported in Eldoret, patient arrived via Nairobi from Congo

Health authorities in Uasin Gishu are on high alert after a suspected Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) case was reported in Eldoret.

According to a county situation report dated Wednesday, May 20, the patient is a 29-year-old Kenyan truck driver.

The driver, based in Zambia, recently travelled from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) through JKIA before heading to Eldoret.

The suspected case was identified at St Luke’s Hospital in Kapsoya, Ainabkoi Sub-county, after the patient reportedly walked into the facility at around 4am seeking treatment.

Medical staff are said to have immediately isolated him after clinical assessment showed symptoms matching the Ebola suspected case definition.

The county report indicates that the man travelled from Lubumbashi in the DRC and arrived in Kenya on May 19. He reportedly first stayed at a residence in Nairobi before travelling to Eldoret later that day.

Health officials further stated that the patient had developed illness symptoms on May 13 while still in Lubumbashi, where he was admitted to Diamant Medical Centre and treated for conditions including sepsis, malaria and typhoid fever.

The patient was later placed in a designated holding area for isolation and further medical assessment. Uasin Gishu county authorities are yet to confirm whether the reported case is an actual Ebola Virus Disease infection.

Ole Sapit Petitions Government to Address High Fuel Prices

Archbishop of the Anglican Church of Kenya, Rev. Dr Jackson Ole Sapit, has asked the government to reduce the cost of fuel in the country.

Speaking on Thursday, May 21, Ole Sapit explained that the high fuel costs in the country have made the lives of Kenyans difficult, as it has a ripple effect on the cost of basic commodities.

He added that the high cost of fuel would also limit access to services, which are essential to the ordinary Kenyan.

“The government must do something to reduce the cost of fuel because fuel will increase the prices of every other commodity in the supermarket and services across the country,” he stated/

The Archbishop explained that the food production sector in the country would feel the pinch due to the increase in the cost of diesel by Ksh36 per litre.

“The fuel price increase will also limit production for the farming communities because when the cost of diesel was increased, the opportunity to produce enough food for Kenya was hampered,” he added.

Consequently, he urged President William Ruto’s government to take all necessary measures to stabilise fuel prices in the country.

He made the statement while attending the Disabilities, Bible and the Church Conference 2026 at CITAM Valley Road.

Kenyans have already started grappling with the harsh reality of the spike in fuel costs. A section of public transport owners has already reviewed the cost of bus fares upward.

A two-day strike by matatu owners, tourist vehicle operators and other players in the public sector industry in protest against fuel prices paralysed transport in most parts of the country.

In response to the strike, the government lowered the price of diesel by Ksh10 per litre, but increased the Kerosene costs by Ksh36 per litre.

The move by the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) meant that families who relied on Kerosene for cooking and lighting would have to dig deeper into their pockets.

Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi maintained that the government was already doing its best to cushion Kenyans from the high fuel costs.

Mbadi claimed that the state had so far spent Ksh17 billion in subsidies over the last two months. He insisted that the high prices were a global phenomenon that Kenya had no control over.

Successful applicants will receive a stipend of Ksh1,500 per assignment day, with the duration depending on field deployment timelines.

The board further noted that performance monitoring will be conducted throughout the exercise, warning that non-compliant enumerators may be replaced.

Nyeri Polytechnic Closed Indefinitely After Students Stage Protests

The Nyeri National Polytechnic was closed indefinitely on Friday, May 22, after students at the institution went on strike.

In a letter issued by the management, students taking courses at the institution were asked to vacate its premises immediately.

The students went on strike over the alleged mismanagement of the student elections and poor leadership and management of the institution.

The Polytechnic’s leadership is also accused of increasing school fees by allegedly introducing a new internship fee, prompting students to go on a rampage.

A team of anti-riot police officers were deployed to the institution to restore calm and ensure security amid rising tension between students and the management.

Students were engaged in running battles with police officers outside the school premises for hours. They hurled stones at the uniformed officers and barricaded the road heading to the university.

Police officers lobbed teargas and shot into the air to disperse the group of protesting students. They also cleared the stones and vegetation used to close off the road.

Several students were seen leaving the institution in droves. Residents in the neighbouring Mumbi Estate have been asked to avoid the area

“Avoid the Nyeri National Politechnic area. It is not safe at all right now. There are gunshots all over because the students are on strike,” a local warned in a Facebook post.

In a statement issued on Friday, May 22, the National Police Service explained that a multi-agency team conducted a sting operation after receiving intelligence reports about the presence of the militants.

The officers managed to neutralise the threat posed by the suspected terrorists, who opened fire indiscriminately.

“During the operation, security personnel established a presence near Gel Qad Junction before advancing towards Qanjara Durow, where they encountered suspected militants and engaged in a fierce exchange of fire.

“They overpowered the Al-Shabaab militants and secured the area. The team further dismantled the camp after neutralising more militants who were present,” the statement read in part.

The elite group of officers took control of the camp, where they recovered weapons of mass destruction used by the suspected Al-Shabaab militants.

“The team recovered assorted materials linked to militant activities, including communication equipment, improvised explosive device (IED)-related materials, uniforms, ammunition, food supplies, and other logistical items,” the statement added.

NPS confirmed that the recovered items were ferried to a secure location, where detectives are expected to conduct further examination.

The Police reaffirmed its commitment to protecting communities and sustaining operations aimed at degrading criminal and extremist activities.

Meanwhile, the NPS called on Kenyans to chip in by reporting suspicious activities to the nearest police station or to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) using the toll-free lines.

The raid came two months after the police foiled a planned terror attack in February 2026. According to the police, the Al-Shabaab militant group had  planned to conduct a severe attack in Nairobi during Ramdhan celebrations.

22-Year-Old Arrested After Stealing Firearm from Police Officer

Police Officers in Trans Nzoia have arrested a 22-year-old suspect in connection with stealing a firearm from a police officer.

In a statement on Friday, May 22, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) said the incident happened on Wednesday, May 20, 2026.

According to the DCI, the suspect, identified as Brian Kibet, walked into the Kitale Police station claiming he had recently been transferred from Eldoret.

The suspect struck up friendly conversations with officers at the gate and requested assistance in finding accommodation.

“It all unfolded on Wednesday, 20th May 2026, when a man clad in a police raincoat, claiming to be a newly posted officer from Eldoret, sauntered into Kitale Police Station.

“With an air of familiarity, he chatted up the officers on gate duty, charmingly asking for help in finding accommodation in the police line. Little did they know this was no ordinary tale of a newly posted officer,” read the statement in part.

Kibet then asked the police officers to show him a spot where he could have a meal, and the unsuspecting officers accompanied him to a nearby hotel.

The suspect then duped one of the officers into helping him carry his belongings when he allegedly managed to steal a loaded Steyr rifle loaded with 25 rounds of 9mm ammunition and jumped onto a waiting motorcycle.

“As they walked, the sly thief cleverly duped one of the officers into helping carry his belongings, all while surreptitiously snatching the officer’s loaded Steyr rifle, complete with twenty-five rounds of 9mm ammunition.

“With lightning speed, the suspect then hopped onto a waiting motorcycle and sped off into the night, leaving confusion and disbelief in his wake,” DCI said.

Police officers launched a manhunt for Kibet, and through crucial leads, they tracked the suspect to Sokomoko Village in Trans Nzoia East.

Kibet was found in possession of the stolen Steyr rifle, loaded with twenty-five rounds of 9mm ammunition, and ready for action.

The 22-year-old was swiftly taken into custody, where he is undergoing processing pending arraignment.
