At least 14 people were killed and several others wounded on Wednesday after Sudan’s paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) shelled a displacement camp in the Darfur region, according to local volunteer rescuers.
The attack targeted the Abu Shouk camp, located near El-Fasher, the capital of North Darfur state. The shelling struck both residential areas and a local market, according to the Abu Shouk Emergency Response Room, a community-led aid group providing frontline relief since the war erupted in April 2023.
Described as “heavy artillery shelling,” the assault marks the second deadly RSF attack on the camp in less than a month. A similar strike on May 18 also killed 14 people.
Abu Shouk is home to tens of thousands of displaced people, many of whom fled earlier waves of violence in Darfur and more recent fighting between the army and RSF. Since losing control of Sudan’s capital, Khartoum, in March, the RSF has intensified its campaign in Darfur, focusing attacks on El-Fasher, the last state capital in the region still held by the army.
The broader conflict has claimed tens of thousands of lives, displaced over 13 million people, and triggered what the UN calls the world’s worst hunger and displacement crisis. The war has effectively split the country, with the army controlling the north, east, and central regions, while the RSF dominates Darfur and parts of the south.
