Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo has ignited a debate with her proposal to keep the Olympic rings on the Eiffel Tower after the 2024 Summer Games.
Hidalgo, who claims to have the backing of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), said the rings would remain in place, symbolizing the unity of the five continents.
She added that while the current rings are too heavy, they would eventually be replaced with a lighter version.
The decision has divided Parisians. Some residents and tourists have welcomed the idea, appreciating the colorful addition to the iconic structure.
“The rings add a festive touch,” said Solène, a visitor.
However, others, including heritage campaigners, argue that the rings deface the historic monument. “It’s a historic monument, why defile it with rings?” asked Manon, a local resident.
Critics on social media have also questioned Hidalgo’s decision-making process, suggesting she should have consulted Parisians.
Despite the controversy, Hidalgo remains firm in her decision, noting that the rings reflect the renewed love for Paris during the Games.
The mayor, known for her bold reforms, continues to shape the city’s future, though not without sparking debate.
