Parliament, Treasury to Hold High-Level Workshop on Climate Action in Naivasha

Lawmakers from both Houses of Parliament are set to converge in Naivasha, Nakuru County, for a pivotal five-day workshop on climate action and sustainable development financing. The workshop, running from May 22nd to 27th, will focus on Financing Locally-Led Climate Action (FLLOCA) and the critical role Members of Parliament play in driving Kenya’s climate agenda forward.

Convened by the Parliament of Kenya through the Parliamentary Caucus on Climate Action in partnership with the National Treasury, the workshop is designed to deepen legislators’ understanding of climate change and garner stronger political support for the FLLOCA program. The bi-cameral caucus is led by Homa Bay Senator Moses Kajwang’ and Njoro Member of Parliament Charity Kathambi.

The initiative follows key takeaways from Kenya’s participation in the 29th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29), where lawmakers recognized the pressing need for a comprehensive sensitization platform for all Parliamentarians on climate issues.

FLLOCA is a flagship multi-donor program supported by the World Bank, Denmark, Sweden, the Netherlands, and the Government of Kenya. It prioritizes local-level climate resilience by investing in community-driven projects, strengthening climate data systems, and enhancing institutional capacity.

“This workshop aims at equipping MPs with practical strategies and tools for developing, advocating for, and implementing sustainable and culturally sensitive climate policies and legislation,” noted a briefing from the organizers. The sessions will also spotlight innovative financing mechanisms and explore collaborative partnerships between Parliament and climate stakeholders.

Key expected outcomes include a deeper grasp of climate change impacts, an improved understanding of financing tools under FLLOCA, and the formulation of tailored local strategies responsive to community needs. Legislators will also be tasked with formulating strong oversight frameworks to ensure transparency and accountability in the use of climate funds.

Beyond legislation, the workshop hopes to foster a vibrant network of climate-conscious lawmakers capable of mobilizing broader parliamentary and public support. Civic education and public participation will also be emphasized as essential pillars of effective climate governance.

As climate change continues to pose complex and urgent challenges, this workshop marks a strategic move to align Kenya’s legislative leadership with global best practices and localized action for a more resilient future.
