Passaris demands arrest of fans stepping on Kenyan flag at football match

Nairobi Woman Representative Esther Passaris has called for strict enforcement of laws protecting the Kenyan flag, warning that its misuse dishonours the sacrifices made for the country’s independence.

In a strongly worded statement posted on her X account on Tuesday, September 23, 2025, Passaris urged the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to arrest individuals found desecrating or misusing the national flag.

She anchored her remarks on Section 3 of the National Flag, Emblems and Names Act (Cap 99, Laws of Kenya), which prohibits improper use, insult, or desecration of the Kenyan flag.

“Section 3 of the National Flag, Emblems and Names Act (Cap 99, Laws of Kenya) prohibits the improper use, insult, or desecration of the Kenyan flag, with penalties for offenders,” she wrote, stressing that the law provides clear guidance on the matter.

The legislator decried what she termed as rising disregard for the flag, saying it is “unfortunate to see people abuse our Kenyan flag.”

She reminded Kenyans that the national symbol was not just a piece of cloth but a powerful emblem of the country’s identity and freedom.

“Blood was shed for this flag to be raised high,” she emphasised, framing the flag as a reminder of the price paid during the struggle for independence.

Passaris further noted that respect for the Kenyan flag extends beyond national pride to include legal obligation and moral duty.

“I call on @DCI_Kenya to arrest anyone desecrating or misusing our national flag. Our Kenyan flag must be respected, and any other for that matter,” she added.

Passaris’ remarks come in the wake of increased condemnation and anger after a section of football fans were recorded at Nyayo Stadium stepping on the Kenyan flag after a football match.

The incident has sparked mixed reactions online, with people calling for accountability.

Videos circulating online show two fans taking turns to mock the flag – one spreads it on the ground and then kicks it up before his mate grabs it mid-air and rubs it up his crotch as they both erupt into laughter.
