Several passengers cheated death when their 14-seater matatu veered off the road and landed in a ditch on the Nairobi-Embu highway.
The accident, which occurred at Kambiti, saw the vehicle lose control and roll several times before turning upside down. Fortunately, no casualties were reported.
Eyewitness accounts said the driver was attempting to overtake another vehicle when the accident occurred.
The Kambiti area, known for its dangerous black spots, has been the site of numerous accidents in recent years.
A similar incident in 2022 resulted in three fatalities when a matatu collided with a lorry during an overtaking maneuver.
This incident marked the second accident reported in Kenya on Sunday. Earlier that day, five individuals died in a horrific motorcycle accident along the Likoni-Kombani road in Kwale County, when their bike collided with a stalled lorry.
According to the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), road safety in Kenya has deteriorated in 2024, with 2,407 fatalities and over 10,000 injuries reported in the first half of the year, raising significant concerns about road safety measures.
