Safaricom’s Legal Manager has been summoned to court on Tuesday next week for refusing to enable police to investigate seven Mpesa lines belonging to embattled kilifi Pastor Ezekiel Odero, which have been tied to money laundering.
Milimani Magistrate Ben Mark Ekhubi issued the orders on Monday, May 22, 2023, after the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) informed the court that Safaricom had failed to comply with court orders to disclose the statements of the MPesa transactions for the pastor and his Church lines.
On May 8, the DCI got court orders ordering Safaricom and five banks to provide account transactions for Pastor Odero, his New Life Church, and Kilifi International School.
The DCI requested a summons through Chief Inspector Martin Munene, stating that Safaricom has yet to comply with the demands despite being legally served with a court order to grant them access to the books accounts of the MPesa lines belonging to Odero.
“Despite being served with the orders on May 8, 2023, Safaricom has not complied with the orders of this court nor appeared before this court to give reasons for non-compliance,” Inspector Munene testified under oath to the court.
The DPP through James Gachoka concurred with a plea by DCI to have the legal officer of the giant telecommunication firm compelled to appear in court to show cause why the company should not be punished for contempt of court.
He however told the court that investigations into t the banks is over and requested the court to vacate the freezing orders officially.
