Nyayo ‘Pele’ Stadium: FIFA President Asks Countries To Rename Stadiums

The three-time World Cup champion and more than 1,000-goal scorer Pelé passed away last Thursday at the age of 82.

Gianni Infantino, the president of Fifa, announced on Monday that the organization would want to request that every nation name a stadium in honour of Pelé.

The three-time World Cup champion and more than 1,000-goal scorer Pelé passed away last Thursday at the age of 82.

“We’re going to urge every nation in the globe to designate one of their football stadiums with the name of Pelé,” Infantino, who is in Brazil for Pelé’s funeral, told local media.

Rio de Janeiro decided against renaming the renowned Maracan stadium after Pelé in April 2021 after the state governor objected to the idea.

Infantino released a statement on the day of Pelé’s death which began: “For everyone who loves the beautiful game, this is the day we never wanted to come. The day we lost Pelé.”
