Kenyan Peres Jepchirchir, who won the Olympics, New York City, and Boston marathons in the last year, has withdrawn from next Monday’s world championships marathon.
According to the Daily Nation, Jepchirchir, a 28-year-old mother, began experiencing difficulty in her right hip since last week.
Last year, Jepchirchir became the first person in history to win both the Olympic and New York City Marathons in the same year.
She subsequently added a title in Boston on April 18, firmly establishing herself as the world’s best marathoner.
In Jepchirchir’s absence, the marathon field at the World Championships in Eugene, Oregon, is led by Kenya’s defending champion Ruth Chepngetich and Ethiopians Ababel Yeshaneh (second to Jepchirchir in Boston) and Gotytom Gebreslase.
