Milimani Law courts have convicted and sentenced a Nigerian student found guilty of money laundering.
Peter Olaiwon Oluwafemi was arraigned in Court in 2021 with Financial Promotion of an offence contrary to the Proceeds of Crime and Anti-money laundering Act.
According to the charges, Peter received $28,000 concealed in a jacket send to him from South Carolina with the intent to commit evasion of Tax.
The prosecution throughout the hearing proved their case beyond reasonable doubt that indeed the accused acted in overt action by concealing the proceeds of the crime.
In mitigation, the accused said that he was remorseful for what transferred and promised to be keen and follow Kenyan laws strictly.
Miss Mukabana, his defense counsel said that the convict was a young man with a great future ahead, she further said he had come to Kenya for a vacation and that he had no family in Kenya.
“Your honor I pray that this Court issues an order that he repatriated back to his country”
The Court ruled that the accused person acted in an overt manner.
“I noted the fact that he is a young man and a first offender but the offense carries a serious sentence” ruled the Magistrate.
The Court sentenced him to serve 3 years in prison or pay a fine of Ksh 3 million.
