Petitioner Disputes ‘Tribal’ EALA MPs 

A man has petitioned the list of MPs elected to the East Africa Legislative Assembly (EALA) over regional imbalance.

Kau Quentin Mengo moved to court to challenge the list of successful nominees.


According to the petitioner represented by Danstan Omari, Azimio One Kenya Alliance submitted its list of 12 nominees while Kenya Kwanza Alliance submitted 15 nominees.

The total list of 27 nominees was reflective of the face of Kenya ethnically.

However, on November 17,2022 at the voting phase in the two houses of parliament, the final representative’s list failed to meet the constitutional provisions after it fell short of the National values including equity and inclusiveness.

According to the petition document, the 27 nominees subjected to vote were as follows;

Kenya Kwanza: David Sanchok-Narok, Hassan Omar- Mombasa, Rebecca Lowoiya-Turkana, Zipporah Kering-Nandi, Godrey Maina-Muranga, Joel Nyambane-Kisii, Fredrick Muteti-Makueni, Falhadha Iman-Garissa, Dr,Abdikadir Omar Aden- Garissa, Anne Too-Kericho, Jones Misto-Tranzoia, Cyprian Kubai-Meru, Lilian Cheptoo-West Pokot, Yasser Ali-Mombasa and Salim Mohamed-Lamu.

Azimio on the other hand Submitted; Winnie Odiga-Nairobi, Suleiman Shabal-Mombasa, Mohamed Diriye-Wajir, Timothy Bosire- Nyamira, Beatrice Askul-Turkana, Justus Kizito-Kakamega, Kennedy Kalonzo Musyoka-Nairobi,Wilfred Syonindi Mutua-Machakos, Hellen Mueni-Machakos, Mathenge Kanini Kega-Nyeri, Fatuma Gedi-Wajir and Jeremiah Kioni-Nyeri.

This list according to the petitioner met the provisions of the constitution as it represented the face of Kenya ethnically.

The train lost control on the Seventeenth day of November at the close of the voting phase in the two houses of parliament when the final representative’s list deliberately failed to meet the constitutional standards.

The nine representatives voted from the nominee list were David Sanchok-Nrok, Hassan Omar-Mombasa, Zipporah Kering-Nandi, Fredick Muteti-Makueni, Falhadha Iman-Garissa, Winnie Odinga-Nairobi, Suleiman Shabal-Mombasa, Kennedy Kalonzo Musyoka-Nairobi and Mathenge Kanini Kega-Nyeri.

According to the petitioner, Nairobi and Mombasa had more than one Nominee making it in the list of 9 members voted at the expense of other nominees.

The petitioner is afraid that the Clerck of the National assembly and senate are enjoined to forward the list to the assembly for swearing.
