Philip Aroko To Spend Night In Police Cells; Denies Links To MP Were’s Murder

Homa Bay businessman and politician Philip Nahashon Aroko on Wednesday evening presented himself to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) following his summons in connection with the ongoing probe into the murder of Kasipul MP Charles Ong’ondo Were.

Accompanied by his lawyer Danstan Omari, Aroko first appeared at the DCI headquarters where he addressed the press, firmly denying any involvement in the killing and accusing political forces of hijacking the investigation.

“I have nothing to hide. I’m ready to cooperate with detectives,” Aroko stated, blaming Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga for allegedly pushing for his summoning.

“The politics in Homa Bay have turned into thuggery. I saw the Governor making calls to ensure I was brought here. Let her bring any evidence if she has it,” he said.

The businessman claimed the accusations stem from political rivalries surrounding the late MP’s upcoming burial, which he insisted he has a right to attend.

His lawyer echoed this, saying Aroko’s arrest appeared politically motivated. “This is politics of exclusion. Some fear his growing popularity and are trying to keep him from the funeral,” Omari said.

Aroko was later transferred to Gigiri Police Station where he spent the night in custody. Omari confirmed his client was safe and in good condition, with access to legal counsel and family.

Aroko is expected to be interrogated on Thursday, with police insisting that due process will be followed in the ongoing murder investigation.
