(PHOTOS) Ithookwe Airstrip Reopens For Business!

Kitui County’s newly reconstructed Ithookwe Airstrip officially came to life on Monday morning as it received President William Ruto, senior government officials, and visiting delegations attending this year’s Mashujaa Day celebrations.

The occasion marked a major step in Kenya’s push to expand regional air infrastructure and spur economic growth beyond major cities.

The airstrip, developed by the Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) under the national aviation modernization programme, now boasts a 950-metre runway and a fully marked apron designed for safe and efficient aircraft handling.

A new parking area and driveway are under construction to improve accessibility, while the terminal building is nearing completion.

President William Ruto in his speech said the Airstrip will be upgraded with modern equipment and terminal building

According to KAA General Manager for Marketing and Business Development, Abraham Kipruto, who briefed Transport Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir on site, the facility will enhance regional connectivity and open up Kitui to tourism, trade, and investment opportunities.

The airstrip’s revival is expected to position Kitui as a key transport hub in eastern Kenya, linking it more effectively with Nairobi and neighbouring counties.

It also underscores the government’s broader strategy to decentralize development and strengthen local economies through improved infrastructure.

When fully operational, Ithookwe Airstrip will serve as both a logistical gateway and a catalyst for growth, bringing Kitui closer to the rest of the country and, for once, within easier reach of opportunity.
