Pochettino Fate Hangs In Balance As PSG Moot ‘Shiny’ Mourinho

Nasser Al-Khelaifi, the president of Paris Saint-Germain, is expected to make a definitive decision on Mauricio Pochettino’s future this week.

Leonardo, the sporting director, was fired on the final day of the season, however his departure has yet to be verified publicly. The vacuum left by the Brazilian’s departure has allowed Luis Campos to take his place.

Pochettino is largely expected to follow Leonardo out the door, but the fact that he hasn’t been told either way means that conversations with potential replacements are still ongoing.

Former Tottenham boss Pochettino has had a rollercoaster time in charge of PSG since joining them in January 2021 as Thomas Tuchel’s replacement but has still enjoyed success at the club.

He led PSG to the Ligue 1 title this season — they won their division quicker than any other team in the top five leagues in Europe — and his side were unbeaten at home in the league and Champions League.

The Argentinian is only the second manager in the Qatari Sports Investment period to lead PSG to the Champions League semi-finals.

New reports from The Telegraph suggest Jose Mourinho might be in line to succeed Pochettino for the second time in his career, fueling speculation about the Argentine’s future. When Pochettino was fired from Tottenham in late 2019, it was the self-proclaimed’special one’ who took over.

Mourinho’s stint in North London ended in failure, albeit the timing of his dismissal caused some surprise, since he was fired just six days before the Carabao Cup final, despite the Portuguese manager’s poor record in finals.

Mourinho’s abilities were on full display lately with current club AS Roma, as he assisted the Italian club in winning the Europa Conference League for the first time. Feyenoord were defeated 1-0 by Roma in the final.

Given PSG’s desperation to win the Champions League, Mourinho’s newest piece of European silverware is likely to have caught their attention. Despite the fact that the Conference League is the lowest-ranked of all of Mourinho’s European titles, he was just as happy to win it.
