Police Assures Kenyans of Security Ahead of June 2024 Anniversary—Breach of Peace Will not be Tolerated

The National Police Service (NPS) has issued a strong reassurance to Kenyans of their safety and security ahead of Tuesday’s planned demonstrations marking the anniversary of the June 25, 2024, protests.

In a statement released Monday, Inspector-General Douglas Kanja affirmed the police service’s commitment to upholding constitutional freedoms, including the right to peaceful assembly as provided for under Article 37 of the Constitution.

“The NPS is a professional, apolitical, and accountable institution operating independently under the Office of the Inspector-General,” said Mr Kanja. “We strive for the highest standards of professionalism, discipline, and respect for human rights.”

While acknowledging past incidents of misconduct, the IG reiterated that the Service operates under a robust framework of oversight and accountability involving bodies such as the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA), Parliament, and the Internal Affairs Unit.

Mr Kanja stressed that police will continue to act firmly and lawfully against any breach of peace, warning against unlawful or riotous assemblies. He urged protest organisers to cooperate with the authorities, citing the provisions of the Public Order Act.

“Any contrary conduct constitutes an unlawful, riotous assembly, and shall be handled as provided for by the law,” the statement warned.

The IG also issued a caution against accessing protected areas and engaging in provocative acts directed at officers on duty. Citizens were urged to report suspicious activity via national emergency numbers or the #FichuakwaDCI platform.

Mr Kanja praised the dedication of police officers serving across the country and called for national unity. “Kenya is our homeland. Let us protect it together,” he said.

The statement comes amid heightened security across major towns as the country braces for nationwide demonstrations.
