Police, British High Commission Conducts Terror Response Drill to Boost Emergency Preparedness

The National Police Service (NPS), in collaboration with the British High Commission, conducted a live simulation exercise on March 6, 2025, to test emergency response preparedness in the event of a terrorist attack.

The drill, held at the National Police Leadership Academy (NPLA) in Ngong, was organized through the National Disaster Management Unit (NDMU).

The exercise aimed to assess the effectiveness of police and emergency responders, multi-agency coordination, and the interoperability of specialist units such as the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) and Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) teams.

Speaking during the event, the Commandant of the National Police College Main Campus – Kiganjo, Mr. Nyale Munga, SAIG, who represented the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Douglas Kanja, praised the teams for demonstrating high levels of expertise in handling emergency situations.

“This exercise is crucial in ensuring our officers are well-prepared to respond swiftly and effectively to terrorist threats. Regular drills strengthen our ability to protect lives and maintain national security,” said Mr. Munga.

The initiative is part of the ongoing Terrorist Incident First Response Awareness (TIFRA) and Terrorist Incident Command Response Awareness (TICRA) programs, introduced in all National Police Colleges through the UK’s International Protect and Prepare Programme. These courses aim to enhance police response capabilities and public safety awareness.

Among the officials present were NPC Embakasi ‘A’ Campus Commandant, Mr. Davis Lomwatu, SAIG; NPLA Commandant, Mr. David K. Mathiu, AIG; and representatives from the National Counter Terrorism Centre (NCTC), U.S. Embassy, Ministry of Health, Youth Affairs, Creative Economy and Sports, and the local Sub-County Security Committee.

With terrorism remaining a global security threat, such preparedness drills are essential in reinforcing Kenya’s ability to prevent and respond to attacks effectively.
