The National Police Service (NPS) has confirmed that 11 people died and over 50 officers were injured during the Saba Saba protests held across the country on Monday, July 7.
In a press statement released by NPS spokesperson Muchiet Nyaga, authorities detailed widespread unrest linked to what began as peaceful demonstrations. The protests, commemorating the 35th anniversary of the pro-democracy Saba Saba movement, were marred by violence in several parts of the country.
“Preliminary reports indicate fatalities, injuries, damage to motor vehicles, and several incidents of looting,” the statement read.
According to the NPS, among those arrested is Manyatta MP Hon. Gitonga Mukunji. The total number of arrests stands at 567, while 52 police officers and 11 civilians were injured. Damaged property includes 12 police vehicles, three government vehicles, and four privately owned cars.
Police claim the violence was instigated by criminal elements who infiltrated the protests with the intention of attacking officers and destroying property.
“The NPS commends its officers for demonstrating exceptional restraint and professionalism in the face of sustained violence and provocation,” said Nyaga.
The statement urged the public to report any individuals suspected of taking part in criminal acts during the protests through official hotlines and toll-free numbers.
While the statement praised the majority of Kenyans for maintaining peace, it also reaffirmed the NPS’s commitment to investigating all reported incidents and ensuring justice is served.
The report comes as public concern grows over the handling of recent demonstrations, with civil society groups and opposition leaders calling for accountability and urgent police reforms to prevent further bloodshed.
