Police Dispels Rumors On DP Ruto Security

Concerns made by the removal of the General Service Unit (GSU) security from Deputy President William Ruto’s official residence in Karen, Nairobi, were downplayed by the National Police Service.

Police Spokesman Bruno Shioso said the change of guard was a “normal re-assignment of tasks within the National Police Service to increase efficiency and effectiveness,” according to a message to newsrooms.

The GSU officers stationed at Ruto’s residence, he said, had been replaced by officers from the Security of Government Buildings Unit (SGB).

“Today 26th August 2021 the Security of Government Buildings Unit (SGB) has been deployed to provide general security to the official residence of H.E the Deputy President from General Service Unit (GSU). This is a normal re-assignment of duties within the National Police Service to enhance efficiency and effectiveness,” reads the statement.

The Presidential Escort Unit continues to provide close protection security to DP Ruto, according to the police spokesman.

The DP’s office complained about a “diabolical manifestation of bad faith” in a statement issued by communication secretary David Mugonyi on Thursday.

The DP was not notified of the change in security, according to Mugonyi, who was only informed by the officer in charge of the GSU stationed at his residence that he had received orders to withdraw officers.

The changing of the DP’s guards, according to Mugonyi, is the latest in a series of measures to undermine the DP’s personal protection in the name of political vendetta.

“The office of Deputy President has formally written to the Inspector General of Police, seeking an official explanation on this matter, and reasons for the breach of security,” part of the statement reads.
