Make Police Respect The Law, Koome Asks IG

CJ Koome, speaking after IG Koome's inauguration, cited rising cases of police officers infringing on Kenyans' rights, which has been deemed an abuse of power.

Chief Justice Martha Koome has urged Japhet Koome, the new Inspector General of Police, to ensure that the police service upholds the rule of law and professionalism.

CJ Koome, speaking after IG Koome’s inauguration, cited rising cases of police officers infringing on Kenyans’ rights, which has been deemed an abuse of power.

“We have the best constitution in the world, which tells us that the sovereign power of this country rests with the people, and then the people have given us power so that we can serve them,” said the Chief Justice.

“I also urge you to support the constitutional dream of democratic policing; the Kenyan dream of a police service that serves the people while maintaining professionalism.” I’m glad you mentioned professionalism because no police officer is trained to abuse power, violate Kenyans’ rights, or arm them.” said CJ Koome.

The Chief Justice praised the new collaboration between the Judiciary and the Police Service, which is aimed at ensuring changes to the Criminal Justice System (CJS)
