Police in Migori County have launched a manhunt and opened investigations following the fatal stabbing of a police officer attached to the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) in Muhurubay, Nyatike South Sub-County.
The officer, identified as Gilbert Kibet, was reportedly attacked by a civilian suspect outside Genasa Bar and Restaurant in Muhuru Town on the night of Thursday, July 10.
According to a police incident report, Kibet was stabbed on the left side of the neck by an individual only identified by his alias, “Boy.” The officer was rushed to a nearby medical facility but tragically succumbed to his injuries en route.
Nyatike South Deputy County Commissioner Festus Kimeu confirmed the incident and stated that the officer was off-duty at the time of the attack and was heading home around midnight when the assault occurred.
“The motive behind the killing is yet to be established, and investigations are underway,”
Kimeu told reporters on Friday.
The suspect fled the scene immediately after the attack and remains at large. Police have launched a manhunt and are urging the public to report any information that may lead to his arrest.
The body of the deceased has been transferred to the Migori County Referral Hospital mortuary, where a postmortem examination is scheduled to help establish the exact cause of death and possibly aid in the investigation.
The Kenya Revenue Authority has yet to release an official statement on the matter, but officers within the enforcement and customs units have expressed shock at the killing, describing Kibet as a committed officer.
The incident adds to a series of recent violent episodes involving security personnel across the country, raising concerns about the growing threats faced by law enforcement officers — both on and off duty.
Police are calling on residents of Muhurubay and the larger Nyatike area to remain calm and cooperate with investigations.
