Police Raid South Korean Presidential Office Amid Political Turmoil

Police raided the presidential office on Wednesday, escalating the political crisis surrounding President Yoon Suk Yeol.

The raid follows last week’s failed attempt to impose martial law, a move that has left the country in turmoil.

Eighteen investigators seized records related to a contentious cabinet meeting on the night of the martial law declaration.

President Yoon, a central figure in the investigation, was absent during the operation.

The embattled president faces accusations of insurrection and treason after resisting impeachment and calls to resign.

His term has been significantly curtailed after striking a deal with ruling party lawmakers to limit his role in governance.

However, opposition leaders have denounced the agreement as unconstitutional.

The crisis deepened on Tuesday night when former Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun, detained for his role in the martial law attempt, attempted suicide.

Officials report that Kim is in stable condition but remains under guard.

Protests continue nationwide, with demonstrators demanding Yoon’s resignation. Experts predict his impeachment and possible prosecution are imminent.

“The raids signal intensifying pressure on Yoon,” said Mason Richey of Hankuk University. “The situation remains fluid, but accountability seems inevitable.”

South Korea’s political future hangs in the balance as the drama unfolds.
