The National Police Service has announced that traffic will be disrupted on four major roads in Nairobi on Friday, April 29, due to the late former President, Emilio Stanley Mwai Kibaki’s, funeral service.
According to a statement signed by police spokesperson Bruno Shioso on Thursday, April 28, a procession to the stadium led by the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) will disrupt traffic flow on some parts of the procession route, including Procession Way, Kenyatta Avenue, Uhuru Highway, and Aerodrome Road. The inconvenience will begin as early as 7 a.m.
This will have an impact on traffic flow on the congested Mombasa Road as well as other routes near the designated roads.
To avoid inconvenience, police have asked motorists to take alternate routes due to the disruption.
“Motorists have been advised to avoid Aerodrome Road and a section of Uhuru Highway between Nyayo House and Lusaka roundabouts.
“Vehicles driving to the city from Waiyaki Way and intending to cross over to Mombasa Road are advised to avoid the Uhuru Highway and divert to Nyayo Stadium and join Jomo Kenyatta Highway towards Moi Avenue heading to Haile – Selassie Roundabout, then towards City Stadium onwards to Mombasa Road,” the police advised.
To avoid inconveniences along Uhuru Highway, those intending to access CBD from Mombasa Road or Westlands have been advised to use the Southern Bypass, or Likoni Enterprise and Lusaka Roads.
Police have also stated that only vehicles with stickers will be permitted to park at Nyayo National Stadium.
Those who do not have stickers will only be permitted to drop off guests outside the stadium and then proceed to Lang’ata Road Primary School and Green Park Bus Terminus, where alternative parking spaces will be provided.
“Traffic police and other police officers shall be at hand to afford support and guidance to all guests. Kindly comply with them for the success of the occasion,” Shioso added.
The late Kibaki’s state funeral will be held at Nyayo Stadium, with full military honors accorded.
His body will then be transported by road to Othaya, where he will be buried privately.
