Anti-riot police clashed with protesters on Thika Road in Roysambu on Sunday as they attempted to block the superhighway near Jesus Winner Ministry Church.
The demonstration was sparked by President William Ruto’s controversial Ksh.120 million donation pledge to the church.
Initially, the protesters had planned to march to the church, but a heavy police presence at the entrance and compound forced them to shift their action to the highway.
Burning tyres and rocks were seen on the road near the Roysambu roundabout as police struggled to restore order.
The protest, organized under the #OccupyJesusWinner hashtag, was driven by concerns over Ruto’s large donation at a time when the government has been urging austerity measures.
Critics have faulted the church’s leader, Bishop Edward Mwai, for accepting the funds amid economic hardships.
Addressing his congregation, Bishop Mwai claimed that unnamed individuals had mobilized the protests and “used our children” to disrupt the church.
“People I know very well sent them here today. Someday, they will know there is God’s presence at this altar,” he said.
Despite the backlash, Mwai remained defiant, calling for peace and stating that he had forgiven those who had insulted him.
The protests resulted in multiple arrests, with those detained taken to Kasarani Police Station for questioning as authorities continued monitoring the situation.
