On August 20, 2025, former Chief Justice David Maraga publicly accused President William Ruto of orchestrating the bribery of Members of Parliament (MPs) to facilitate the impeachment of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. Maraga’s statement has intensified existing political tensions within the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party.
The impeachment of Gachagua, finalized in October 2024, followed allegations of corruption, incitement of ethnic divisions, and support for anti-government protests. Parliament voted to remove him from office, but Gachagua contested the process, claiming it was politically motivated and lacked due process.
Maraga’s remarks recall the 2017 election nullification, when the Supreme Court, under his leadership, exposed significant electoral irregularities. His recent accusations suggest a continued pattern of judicial scrutiny over executive actions in Kenya.
A 2021 study by the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International IDEA) noted that bribery in African parliaments often correlates with executive overreach and weak accountability mechanisms. While the study did not provide direct evidence regarding Kenya’s parliament, it underscored the systemic challenges the country faces in maintaining transparent governance.
The impeachment proceedings were reportedly marred by allegations of flawed public participation, intimidation of MPs, and forged signatures, raising further concerns about the legitimacy of the process. Despite this, Gachagua has retained a strong political presence, leveraging his experience and public support to position himself for future political endeavors.
As Kenya approaches the 2027 general elections, the controversy surrounding Gachagua’s impeachment and Maraga’s allegations could significantly influence political dynamics, particularly in the Mount Kenya region where Gachagua enjoys substantial backing. These events highlight ongoing challenges in Kenya’s political landscape, marked by power struggles, allegations of corruption, and persistent concerns over democratic governance.
