Political Turmoil As DP Gachagua Faces Impeachment Threat

Kenya’s Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua is on the brink of political upheaval as impeachment efforts gain traction, escalating tensions with President William Ruto.

What began as quiet murmurs last month has now transformed into serious discussions, with reports suggesting a faction of MPs and a Cabinet Secretary nominee are spearheading Gachagua’s ousting.

The rift between Ruto and Gachagua has deepened since the announcement of a revamped Cabinet, with allegations of gross misconduct and constitutional violations.

A high stakes meeting on Saturday night, attended by 21 MPs and a Cabinet Secretary nominee, concluded with a resolution to initiate an impeachment motion against Gachagua.

Primarily attended by members from the Mt Kenya region, the meeting criticized Gachagua for allegedly undermining President Ruto and promoting a divisive ethnic narrative.

“Deputy President Gachagua’s actions have been detrimental to the unity of our government,” stated an attending MP.

Accusations against Gachagua include blackmail and prioritizing government appointments for his community, notably insisting the former Kenya Revenue Authority Commissioner General Githii Mburu’s position be retained by someone from his region.

The impeachment move comes amidst President Ruto’s decision to include opposition leader Raila Odinga’s loyalists in his Cabinet, seen as a strategic maneuver against Gachagua.

Former Gatanga MP Nduati Ngugi commented, “Ruto and Odinga combining forces poses a significant threat to Gachagua. His impeachment could be imminent if he doesn’t navigate this situation carefully.”

Supporters of Gachagua argue the impeachment threat is a tactic to intimidate the Deputy President and the Mt Kenya region.

Embakasi North MP James Gakuya challenged the plotters, saying, “If they have the numbers, let them proceed.” Kirinyaga Women Representative Njeri Maina urged President Ruto to shield Gachagua from internal political strife, warning that his impeachment could politically backfire.

Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga emphasized the regional implications, stating any action against Gachagua would insult the Mt Kenya region.

Gachagua himself, speaking during a church service in Nyandarua, acknowledged his regional focus and readiness to face any consequences. “I admit I have a weakness for prioritizing my people. If that warrants punishment, so be it,” he stated.
