Politician Philip Aroko Freed, Turns State Witness in MP Ong’ondo Were Murder Probe

Businessman and political figure Philip Nahashon Aroko has been released from custody and will now serve as a state witness in the ongoing high-profile investigation into the murder of Kasipul MP Charles Ong’ondo Were.

Aroko, once considered a suspect in the case, was freed after a review of evidence by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), which determined that he could be more valuable as a key prosecution witness.

His release signals a significant development in the probe, which has already led to formal charges against three individuals.

Until recently, Aroko faced heavy scrutiny from both the public and investigators. In May, the High Court overturned a bail ruling previously issued by the JKIA Chief Magistrate’s Court, siding with prosecutors who had argued that Aroko’s release could interfere with witnesses or co-accused.

Justice Kavenza, in a strongly worded ruling, emphasized the sensitive and complex nature of the case and extended Aroko’s detention to allow investigators time to pursue critical leads. Aroko was held at Kileleshwa Police Station until May 26.

Throughout his detention, Aroko maintained his innocence, denying any involvement in the legislator’s killing.

His transition to a state witness is expected to strengthen the prosecution’s case, though details of his testimony remain sealed.

The murder of MP Ong’ondo Were has rocked the political landscape, sparking calls for transparency and justice.

The case has drawn national attention due to the slain MP’s influence and the emerging political undercurrents surrounding his death.
