Pope Francis Dies at 88

Pope Francis, the 266th pontiff of the Roman Catholic Church and a transformative figure in modern Christianity, passed away this morning at the age of 88.

Cardinal Kevin Farrell, the Vatican camerlengo, announced his death, stating, “At 7:35 this morning, the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the home of the Father. His entire life was dedicated to the service of the Lord and of his Church.”

A Papacy Marked by Humility and Reform

Born Jorge Mario Bergoglio on December 17, 1936, in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Pope Francis was the first Jesuit pope, the first from the Americas, and the first non-European pontiff in over a millennium.

Elected on March 13, 2013, following the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI, he chose the name Francis in honor of St. Francis of Assisi, reflecting his commitment to humility, poverty, and care for the marginalized.

Throughout his papacy, Francis was known for his progressive stances on various issues. He emphasized a “Church of the poor,” advocating for social justice, environmental stewardship, and a more inclusive approach to Church teachings.

His 2015 encyclical, Laudato Si’, called for urgent action on climate change and care for the environment, resonating beyond the Catholic community.

Francis also addressed complex issues within the Church, including the sexual abuse crisis, calling for accountability and transparency. He worked towards interfaith dialogue, notably improving relations with the Muslim world and the Eastern Orthodox Church.

Health Struggles in Later Years

Pope Francis faced several health challenges during his tenure. In his early 20s, he underwent surgery to remove part of one lung due to a severe respiratory infection.

In July 2021, he had colon surgery for diverticulitis, and in June 2023, he underwent abdominal surgery to repair a hernia. Despite these issues, he remained active in his duties, often using a wheelchair or cane due to sciatica and knee problems.

In early 2025, he was hospitalized for a severe case of double pneumonia. Although he made a brief public appearance on Easter Sunday, April 20, greeting thousands from the popemobile in St. Peter’s Square, his health continued to decline, leading to his passing the following morning.

A Global Mourning

The death of Pope Francis has prompted an outpouring of grief worldwide. Leaders from various faiths and nations have expressed their condolences, highlighting his efforts to bridge divides and promote peace.

His emphasis on compassion, humility, and social justice leaves a lasting legacy that transcends religious boundaries.

As the Catholic Church enters a period of mourning, preparations for the conclave to elect his successor will commence, guided by the traditions and protocols established over centuries.

Remembering Pope Francis

Pope Francis will be remembered as a pontiff who brought a renewed focus on mercy, inclusivity, and the Church’s role in addressing global challenges. His teachings and actions have left an indelible mark on the Catholic Church and the world at large.
