Pope Francis Hospitalized for Bronchitis, Cancels Public Engagements

Pope Francis was admitted to Rome’s Gemelli Hospital on Friday for treatment of bronchitis and to undergo diagnostic tests, the Vatican confirmed.

The 88-year-old pontiff’s illness has led to the cancellation of his scheduled engagements through at least Monday.

Despite being diagnosed with bronchitis on February 6, Pope Francis continued to conduct daily audiences from his Vatican residence. He attended his general audience on Wednesday and presided over an outdoor Mass on Sunday. However, due to breathing difficulties, his speeches were read aloud by an aide.

During his Friday engagements, Pope Francis appeared pale and bloated, likely due to medication for his lung infection. His medical history, including the removal of part of one lung in his youth, makes him particularly vulnerable to respiratory issues, especially in winter.

Pope Francis has a history of health struggles, including respiratory illnesses and mobility issues that often require the use of a wheelchair, walker, or cane. He has also suffered two recent falls, injuring his arm and chin. His latest hospitalization follows surgery in June 2023 for intestinal scar tissue and hernia repair.

The Vatican announced that the Pope was admitted following his Friday audiences, including meetings with Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico and CNN head Mark Thompson. Due to his condition, several key events have been canceled, including an audience with artists on Saturday, a Mass on Sunday, and a visit to Rome’s Cinecitt studios on Monday.

Pope Francis remains under close medical supervision as he continues his recovery. This hospitalization has raised concerns about his health, given his ongoing battle with respiratory issues.
