Pope Leo XIV’s visit to Madrid produced one of the most remarkable scenes in the history of the Santiago Bernabéu, as Real Madrid welcomed the pontiff to its iconic stadium and commemorated the occasion with a special-edition jersey inspired by his papal identity.
Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez met Pope Leo XIV during the occasion and presented him with a personalized club jersey featuring the number 1 and the name “Robert F. Prevost” on the back, a tribute to the Pope’s birth name. The two also posed together alongside Real Madrid’s collection of European Cups, while the pontiff gifted Pérez a commemorative medal in return.
The event itself transformed the Bernabéu into something far different from its usual matchday atmosphere. The stadium hosted hours of celebrations, performances, prayers, and musical acts before Pope Leo XIV arrived shortly after 8 p.m. local time. Accompanied by members of Madrid’s diocesan community, he greeted supporters around the stadium before taking his place on a large stage set up inside the ground.
A choir numbering in the thousands, religious imagery, and a packed stadium created a unique backdrop for the evening. Following prayers, hymns, and readings, Pope Leo XIV addressed the crowd with a football-themed message that drew a warm reaction from those in attendance.
“For a football player, scoring a goal in this stadium is something that marks your life,” he said. “Today the Church of Madrid has scored a goal for good.”
The visit carried additional significance for Real Madrid because of comments the Pope made earlier during his trip to Spain. While emphasizing that the Pope belongs to supporters of every club, Leo XIV acknowledged his personal affection for Real Madrid, a revelation that quickly resonated among Madridistas around the world.
Florentino Pérez later described the Pope’s support as an honor for the club, and Real Madrid moved quickly to commemorate the connection.
To coincide with the visit, the club launched a limited-edition jersey inspired by Pope Leo XIV. Displayed prominently in official club stores, the shirt features “León” on the back along with the Roman numeral XIV, reflecting the papal name chosen by Robert Prevost following his election.
The jersey has become one of the most talked-about items in Real Madrid’s retail stores during the Pope’s stay in Madrid. The shirt is priced similarly to the club’s premium match jerseys, with matching shorts and socks also available as part of the collection.
