Beloved Kenyan comedian and satirist KK Mwenyewe, real name Zachariah Kariuki, has died after a brief illness. He was pronounced dead on Monday night at Kiambu Level 4 Hospital, according to close friend and fellow content creator Kafengo.

KK Mwenyewe rose to national fame in late 2022 for his sharp, witty impersonations of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, which quickly went viral on social media. Mimicking Gachagua’s distinctive speech and mannerisms with uncanny accuracy, KK became a standout figure in the country’s digital comedy scene.

In a heartfelt tribute, Kafengo wrote, “Rest in peace brother, you will forever be in our hearts. To the family and friends, may God give us strength during these hard times.”

Though details surrounding his illness remain unclear, tributes have poured in from all corners of the country, reflecting the deep impact KK had on fans and the wider creative community. Busia Senator and presidential hopeful Okiya Omtatah praised the late comedian as “a cultural commentator and brave young patriot,” noting that his satire awakened and united Kenyans through humor.

“Kenya has lost a powerful voice,” Omtatah said in a moving statement. “Through art and satire, KK courageously held a mirror to society.”

Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro also expressed shock, saying, “This is tragic and sudden. Zachariah Kariuki was a very talented and creative comedian. May KK rest in peace.”

X personality Sholla Ard questioned the rise of sudden deaths among young people, while fellow artist Willie Oeba lamented, “The leaders of tomorrow are dying today.”

A Kisii University graduate, KK said in a past interview that his friends encouraged him to take on Gachagua’s character for an online challenge, an act that catapulted him to online fame. Over time, he diversified into broader comedic skits, collaborating frequently with creators such as Cashina Ke.

KK’s influence was immense, his TikTok account had over 1 million followers and more than 19 million likes. His final video, a humorous skit on unemployment, was posted on July 4.

His passing leaves a void in Kenya’s comedy scene and a generation of fans mourning the loss of a bold, creative voice. Plans for his burial and further details about his illness are expected to be released by the family in the coming days.
