A postmortem examination for Albert Ojwang’, a prominent blogger and X influencer who died under controversial circumstances while in police custody, is scheduled to take place this afternoon, June 10, 2025. The procedure aims to establish the cause of his death, which has sparked national outrage and calls for justice.

The exercise, initially planned for Monday, June 9, was postponed after government pathologist Dr. Johansen Oduor recused himself, citing a conflict of interest due to his familial ties with the deceased. Government pathologist Dr. Njeru has since been appointed to lead the autopsy. However, the appointment has faced sharp opposition from private pathologists representing the family.

Ojwang’s family, alongside several human rights organizations, has demanded an independent and transparent investigation. They have urged the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) to probe what they describe as the “mysterious” circumstances surrounding the young man’s death.

IPOA Chairperson Ahmed Hassan has vowed to conduct a thorough and impartial inquiry. Meanwhile, the family’s lawyer has rejected police claims that Ojwang’ took his own life, pointing instead to physical injuries on his head, shoulders, and hands as possible signs of torture.

In response to mounting pressure, Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja confirmed that several officers who were on duty at Nairobi’s Central Police Station on the night of Ojwang’s detention have been interdicted, pending the outcome of IPOA’s investigation.

The results of today’s postmortem are expected to be crucial in shaping the direction of the ongoing probe and delivering answers to a family and public eager for accountability.
