Preparations for the 2025 Madaraka Day celebrations, scheduled for June 1 in Homa Bay County, are well underway, with key infrastructure projects nearing completion. The event will be held under the theme “Blue Economy and Maritime Affairs,” highlighting Kenya’s commitment to harnessing aquatic resources for sustainable development.
According to a statement released Wednesday by Principal Secretary for Internal Security and National Administration, Dr. Raymond Omollo, the celebrations aim to deliver long-term socio-economic benefits to the host county. “This approach ensures that each host county enjoys long-term socio-economic gains beyond the celebrations,” he noted.
The main venue, Raila Odinga Stadium, is receiving major upgrades, including the construction of public terraces and rehabilitation of the pavilion both over 70% complete. Parking areas and perimeter wall extensions are at 60% and 80% completion, respectively.
Additionally, over 35 kilometers of roads are being improved by KeNHA, KeRRA, and KURA to ease access to the stadium and other strategic locations such as the County Government Headquarters in Aurojo.
Renovations are also ongoing at the County Commissioner’s Residence, set to host the official State Garden Party. Works on the main house, staff quarters, ablution facilities, gazebo, and surrounding infrastructure have passed the 75% mark.
Refurbishment of Kabunde Airstrip is progressing steadily, with runway fencing completed and the extension at 70% completion. Construction of a new apron, taxiways, and upgrades to the passenger terminal are also in progress.
“Our primary target is to deliver a successful and memorable Madaraka Day celebration that not only honors our freedom fighters but also reflects the unity and progress of our nation,” said Dr. Omollo.
