President William Ruto and Deputy President Kithure Kindiki’s offices are requesting nearly Sh1.6 billion for renovations and upgrades to government buildings in the upcoming fiscal year.
The funds will refurbish State Houses in Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu, Nakuru, and Kakamega, as well as upgrade the President’s Harambee House office and the Deputy President’s Harambee Annex office.
These projects were delayed due to budget constraints following the collapse of the Finance Bill, 2024, exacerbated by anti-government protests that disrupted revenue collection.
Budget documents submitted to the Treasury outline the renewed proposals, now feasible with the reinstatement of tax measures under the Tax (Amendment) Act 2024.
The renovations are part of a broader Sh7.6 billion upgrade plan for official residences and offices, with current requests covering a fraction of the total.
Specific allocations include Sh180 million for State House Nairobi, Sh55 million for State House Mombasa, and smaller amounts for other locations.
Additionally, Sh200 million is earmarked for communication and networking upgrades at State House, alongside funding for mechanical garage enhancements.
With the Kenya Revenue Authority under pressure to boost tax collections, the proposals have sparked debate over budget priorities amid economic challenges and public demands for fiscal prudence.
