President William Ruto has appointed former Starehe MP Bishop Margaret Wanjiru as Chairperson of the newly established Nairobi Rivers Commission, with former Nominated Senator Millicent Omanga joining as a member.
The appointments were confirmed in a gazette notice dated October 25, alongside eight other commissioners tasked with revitalizing Nairobi’s rivers.
In his statement, President Ruto emphasized the commission’s three-year mandate, effective immediately, focusing on the restoration, protection, and sustainable development of Nairobi’s riverine basin.
The commission will operate from the State Department for Housing and Urban Development.
Ruto noted that past river clean-up efforts fell short, underscoring the need for a coordinated approach to ensure sustainable solutions that support aquatic life and improve urban living conditions.
The commission is directed to review previous reports and address root causes hindering effective rehabilitation.
The commission’s responsibilities include coordinating with various stakeholders to restore Nairobi’s rivers, enhancing water quality, and improving the socio-economic potential of the city’s water bodies.
President Ruto expressed hope that the initiative would create a healthier urban environment for all Kenyans.
