President Ruto Appoints New Deputy Aide-De-Camp

President William Ruto’s deputy aide-de-camp has been replaced after less than two years in office.

According to people familiar with the matter, Lieutenant Colonel Joan Osweto has taken over for Colonel Damaris Agnetta Apondi, who has been assigned to other military duties.

Colonel Osweto was first seen on duty on Thursday at the Sagana State Lodge in Nyeri County, where President Ruto was attending the winners’ state concert for the National Drama and Film Festival.

She deputises President Ruto’s aide-de-camp, Colonel Fabian Lengusuranga.
Colonel Apondi was appointed in September 2022 after President Ruto took office, succeeding Lieutenant Colonel Rachel Nduta, who previously served under President Uhuru Kenyatta.

The President selects his own aide-de-camp, who must be a member of the Kenya Defence Forces.

Despite being perceived as a bodyguard or personal assistant to the President, an aide-de-camp has more roles.
They are responsible for managing the president’s diary and communicating with his or her main security team.

An aide-de-camp is a highly trained senior military officer who must always be present on the president’s itinerary.

The term “Aide-de-camp” comes from French and means “helper in a military camp.”
