President William Ruto has appointed Prof James Onyango Owino as the new chairman
of the Commission for University Education (CUE).
In a Gazette Notice dated August 15, 2025, the President said the appointment was
made in line with Section 6 (1)(a) of the Universities Act, 2012. Prof Owino will serve a
three-year term as the non-executive chairperson of the commission.
“In exercise of the powers conferred by section 6 (1)(a) of the Universities Act, 2012, I
appoint James Onyango Owino (Prof) to be the Non-Executive Chairperson of the
Commission for University Education for a period of three (3) years,” read part of the
notice.
The appointment took effect on Friday, August 15.
Prof Owino takes over from outgoing chairman Prof Chacha Nyaigoti Chacha, whose
term came to an end this year.
