President Ruto approves Bomet University as Kenya’s 36th public university

President William Ruto has awarded a charter to Bomet University, making it the 36th public chartered university in Kenya, in what he described as a commitment to bring higher education closer to the people.

In a statement posted on his X account on Wednesday, February 4, 2026, Ruto emphasised that the move expands choice, reduces barriers to access, and ensures that opportunity is not limited by geography.

“The award of charter to Bomet University, making it the 36th public chartered university in Kenya, affirms our commitment to bring higher education closer to the people. It expands choice, reduces barriers to access, and ensures that opportunity is not limited by geography,” Ruto stated.

National enrolment growth

The head of state revealed that national university enrolment grew by 12 per cent last year as a result of deliberate policy interventions.

He attributed this to his resolve to ensure every qualified Kenyan can pursue higher education and acquire skills necessary for a modern, competitive economy.

“As a result of this deliberate policy, national university enrolment grew by 12 per cent last year. This progress reflects our resolve to ensure that every qualified Kenyan has a fair chance to pursue higher education and acquire the skills required for a modern, competitive economy,” he said.

Milestone for Bomet University

Education CS Julius Migos Ogamba, who joined Ruto at State House, Nairobi, for the conferment ceremony, said the award of the charter marks a major milestone in the university’s development.

“This afternoon, I had the honour of joining His Excellency the President, Dr William Samoei Ruto, at State House, Nairobi, for the conferment of a Charter to Bomet University,” Ogamba stated, in a statement posted on his X account on February 4, 2026.

He noted that the conferment affirms the institution’s full accreditation and autonomy in governance, academic programming, and research.

“The conferment of the Charter marks a major milestone in the growth of the institution, affirming its full accreditation and autonomy in governance, academic programming, and research. It also represents another significant step in the” expansion of higher education access across the country, he added.
