President Ruto Backs Sakaja On Nightclub Closures

President William Ruto has assured Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja of his unwavering support for the closure of nightclubs in residential areas.

Ruto, who backed the governor’s new order, stated that the city needed to work for all of its residents.

“Just to assure my young brother of Nairobi, please keep the noise away from our children, you have our support,” Ruto said.

The President was speaking on Monday at Tatu City Special Economic Zone for the official opening of the Twiga foods distribution Centre.

“I know I have discussed with you this before and you have my support in ensuring we reorganise the city and make it work for all the residents,” he said.

Nairobi County government has revoked all licenses for nightclubs and liquor stores within residential areas in a move to curb noise and annoyance in the estates.

The county further said no nightclub licenses would be issued or renewed for establishments outside the city center.

“Those already issued [with licenses] are hereby canceled and the establishments may continue operating as bars and restaurants,” head of county public service Jairus Musumba said.

“Henceforth, nightclub licenses will be issued to premises only within the central business district and specified streets in other non-residential areas.”

The decision to introduce stringent measures comes in the backdrop of a surge of complaints from the residents over the noise emanating from the bars within residential estates.

Last month, 43 clubs were listed to face closure following similar complaints of noise.
